The way they handle their claims may differ in each state so please be aware this has only been our experience to date and applies to our dwelling in Arizona, so your experience may vary. The first thing I learned is that Allstate does not subscribe to Arizonas laws on the books when it comes to protecting homeowners in the state of Arizona. While Arizona aims to protect its homeowners from insurance companies only acting in their or their shareholders best interest, companies like Allstate regularly try to get away with as much as they can to try to protect their bottom line and do not subscribe to the "spirit" of the laws as they are intended often choosing to walk in what they consider grey areas where there may be room for interpretations. Below is a list of what we have dealt with and most if not all constitute violations of "good faith" guidelines and laws on the books. Check to make sure your adjuster or adjusters are licensed in the state you reside. We have been through 4 now and not one of them have been licensed in AZ. Keep in mind there is some ambiguous language around whether they are on salary or not, etc. The fact of the matter is your adjuster likely is not fully aware of the laws in your state. This makes for the rest of what happened to us make a little more sense but not excusable as we pay Allstate to act in our best interest through our premiums. Delay of payment - at some point in time they will draw a line on living expenses and then try to gate how much and how often you are reimbursed for your expenses. At first they will reimburse once receipts are submitted without delay or question. As the expenses begin to add up over time (repair work and contractors being what they are, notoriously slow) they will begin to make everything out of pocket, and then have to be approved, which will go from days to weeks and then cross the line into a month or more. When they cross this line, keep track because in AZ the law says they now owe you interest on those payments made late. The level of "proof' in the form of documentation for the expenses will increase. If you are displaced and they place you into an approved hotel. Know this will only be ok for a very short period. This is another "good faith" violation. If you should need a kitchen or other amenities because you have pets or kids etc. and get an Air BnB you may be required to book that yourself. Make sure you keep the "rental agreement" signed by both parties with the agreed upon rate and ALL rental language. They really could care less and may even state they didn't get it after you send it several; times (another violation of Good Faith especially if it involves multiple adjusters). What they want is again to delay the reimbursement and make it as difficult as possible to get the money you are owed on the policy you are paying on. The will be ambiguous about what they reimburse - This is yet another red flag and "Good faith violation". It is not until after you have submitted receipts for meals, mileage etc. that this problem will likely arise. Things like, do they reimburse for alcohol at dinner, how many miles is considered excessive or food expenses based on a weekly or monthly average until they deem it excessive .Then they will want itemized receipts. Something as simple as a BBQ dinner may be deemed excessive because of the cost for your family and only a portion of the cost will be reimbursed. They will have other adjusters call and record the call using interrogation methods to try to intimidate you into recanting some expenses under the guise of fraud prevention. Who in their right mind wants to commit insurance fraud? Yet they will accuse you of it in order to slow payments and require documentation to back their suspicions. Be aware as these adjusters may not be licensed in your state either because these are "specialized" mitigation adjusters. These are just a few of the methods they use to show you are in good hands from mayhem when, let's just call it out, they are the ones causing the mayhem. If it comes to this, keep spreadsheets and timelines of everything as well as documentation because it's time to let professionals handle the case. It will be costly but you will be in much better hands looking out for your interests and making sure you are protected from mayhem .
