Sorry to resort to this - I've tried for two months to get John Day back out to my home to fix a…read moreleaky roof (he came out in April to repair the roof but after $750 it did not work and the roof still leaks as badly as before). Update (8/15/14): So shortly after I posted a negative review, I was contacted by the company. John (very apologetic) came out last week and re-repaired the roof. At this point I'm a little leery about updating the review (until I see how the roof performs in the rain) but I'll go with four stars. Maybe I'll just have to drag a hose up there and check it out for myself... stay tuned.

John Day, General Contractor, painter, roofing, remodeling, building... whatever it takes to make your house as good as, or better than new. Big words, no doubt...so how do I express my appreciation for such good work without sounding bought? In a nutshell, I was provided a reasonable estimate to repaint my fading, aging stucco and wood exterior to my little home in Long Beach and though wary, as I am with all "cold-call" contractors, accepted their proposal based on what they promised would be accomplished for the price. Yet simply meeting the contract (prep and paint the house), to me, would be a 3 or maybe 4-Star rating. What drove a 5-Star? Basically, they began on-time, completed on-time, stayed within budget, prepped and painted my house the color I wanted. That's the contract. Mission accomplished. What drove me to rave about them was not what was written in the contract but what they did in lieu of the contract. First of all, they used only top-of-the-line products throughout...from the highest quality Dunn-Edwards paints to the sealants and caulking. They protected and covered every landscape plant (and I have many), replaced all water or bug-damaged wood, cleaned up each night, used initiative to handle some of the more challenging efforts*, were professional at all times and ensured my absolute satisfaction throughout the process. Honestly, when the job was done, I tried very hard to find fault but found none. And I'm very good at finding fault in most things (career military people tend to do this). The owner himself said he'd spent two hours of his own time spot-painting. He even said that my outside patio sink was draining too slow and "he couldn't have that" so snaked it till it ran smooth. If you're looking for simply outstanding, affordable general construction work, you can't go wrong with John Day. *one unique challenge was a large wisteria vine that I didn't want damaged. It may not be as big as Descanso Gardens but it IS thick and beautiful. When it's in bloom, people stop their cars to look at it and at night, the scent is intoxicating. It wraps around the whole patio and to paint it required them to move the plant away from the wood...carefully. I thought I'd stump them on that one but they did it, much to my surprise and pleasure. They're doing everything they can do not honor the warranty and fix the issue, including pointing fingers at everyone they can think of, even though that breaks California state law. If you care about good service and a company that honors a warranty on their errors, this is not the company for you.

Months later when our plumbing backed up and flooded the bathroom, we knew who to call. With the kitchen, we went with another provider for the floor, for insurance reasons. No problem: Matt worked with us at every turn. On lighting, counters and cabinets he offered advice as requested-good advice--but was never intrusive and never went for the hard upsell. His electrician caught numerous places where the previous owners had botched the wiring; he explained them clearly and fixed them. The kitchen is truly gorgeous; I still smile every time I use it. The bathroom was more of the same! He honestly told us we didn't need to replace the subfloor, and completely revised everything else to match our vision: out with the wood paneling and peeling linoleum, in with the muted lighting and ultra quiet fan.

From the first time I met Erik and Isaura, they were both extremely professional and friendly and arrived on time to both the appointment for the estimate and for the actual project date. When the door was completed, Erik cleaned up after himself, explained everything that was done, and ensured if there are any issues or concerns he would come back. After this first project I knew I would be hiring CVR for future home renovations, which I did. Erik has now removed and closed ceiling vents, removed my wall furnace and patched up the wall, installed sensor wired lights to my house, changed my broken garbage disposal and fixed/upgraded my under the kitchen sink plumbing, and today he resurfaced my concrete. Clear Vision Remodeling provided me with the best reasonable quotes for all these projects as well. We were initially referred to Hector (owner) & his team by our pool builder (JM Pools) to do all the masonry, tile, decking, lighting, plants, etc. In the pool building world, there's so many horror stories about going over budget, prolonged waiting, expectations vs reality, etc. We didn't experience any of that working with Hector. Quite the opposite. We came in exactly on budget, finished earlier than expected, & we are absolutely thrilled with the results. I had a decent idea of what I wanted but Hector gave excellent suggestions on multiple design choices. I'm pretty picky when it comes to details & Hector never steered us wrong. His guys were always on time, very polite, never left work unfinished, & were genuinely talented at their craft. Jeff and Clear Vision started out great. He jumped on the project with very short notice and got…read morewhat we absolutely needed to get done before we could move into our new house. After completing some of the work, he abandoned the project without a word and left our house literally torn apart. For a while, he kept saying he was working on a bid, waiting to hear from someone, etc. Then he just stopped responding to us all together. We always paid on time (even though he is very expensive) and were respectful, so I have no idea why he left us in this position. We had to hire someone else to finish the job he abandoned. I also discovered that his workers were drinking our beer on the job. The first time it happened, I told Jeff and he said he would talk to the workers' bosses to make sure it didn't happen again, but it did. A few weeks ago I even found an empty beer bottle hidden under the bathroom sink. It had spilled, so I had to clean up the mess. When I texted Jeff about it, he didn't even respond. I would not recommend.

We always paid promptly and in full for any services rendered, but communication was always terrible during the whole process. I repeatedly had to text and call to see when the remaining work would get completed, and often wouldn't hear back for days, if at all. In fact, the only time communication was prompt was when Jeff was requesting payment- which I always provided right away in hopes that it would encourage him to finish our project. Sadly, the job was never completed. Portions of our home were left demoed out with huge areas of drywall missing and insulation hanging from the ceilings. I tried repeatedly to contact Jeff. At first he would text back days later with one excuse after another, until eventually he just went silent. It's been 8 weeks now and no word. The work that he did complete was severely over priced as I soon found out when I had to bring in other contractors to finish his work. As a final note, each time his workers would be at our house, later that day my wife would find empty beer bottles and beer caps hidden in the cabinets in our house. Twice we even found them in our freezer (luckily before they exploded). Each time we brought it up to Jeff, and each time he said he'd speak with his guys. Yet, it still happened every time. These were not beers they had brought themselves by the way, these were beers they'd taken from our garage. I would highly advise you to find another contractor for your job.
