John Day, General Contractor, painter, roofing, remodeling, building... whatever it takes to make your house as good as, or better than new. Big words, no doubt...so how do I express my appreciation for such good work without sounding bought? In a nutshell, I was provided a reasonable estimate to repaint my fading, aging stucco and wood exterior to my little home in Long Beach and though wary, as I am with all "cold-call" contractors, accepted their proposal based on what they promised would be accomplished for the price. Yet simply meeting the contract (prep and paint the house), to me, would be a 3 or maybe 4-Star rating. What drove a 5-Star? Basically, they began on-time, completed on-time, stayed within budget, prepped and painted my house the color I wanted. That's the contract. Mission accomplished. What drove me to rave about them was not what was written in the contract but what they did in lieu of the contract. First of all, they used only top-of-the-line products throughout...from the highest quality Dunn-Edwards paints to the sealants and caulking. They protected and covered every landscape plant (and I have many), replaced all water or bug-damaged wood, cleaned up each night, used initiative to handle some of the more challenging efforts*, were professional at all times and ensured my absolute satisfaction throughout the process. Honestly, when the job was done, I tried very hard to find fault but found none. And I'm very good at finding fault in most things (career military people tend to do this). The owner himself said he'd spent two hours of his own time spot-painting. He even said that my outside patio sink was draining too slow and "he couldn't have that" so snaked it till it ran smooth. If you're looking for simply outstanding, affordable general construction work, you can't go wrong with John Day. *one unique challenge was a large wisteria vine that I didn't want damaged. It may not be as big as Descanso Gardens but it IS thick and beautiful. When it's in bloom, people stop their cars to look at it and at night, the scent is intoxicating. It wraps around the whole patio and to paint it required them to move the plant away from the wood...carefully. I thought I'd stump them on that one but they did it, much to my surprise and pleasure. After posting my original one-star review... months after it... once the business owner realized that Yelp really works and that if you have bad experiences and write about them people will find that information USEFUL, COOL, or FUNNY and react accordingly... I started receiving pleas to take my one-star review down. I got a call, two Yelp messages, and a "compliment" on Yelp... feel free to find it on my profile and read it. I'm updating my review to two-stars because, when it comes down to it, I didn't actually hire John Day to do any work... because he left a bad impression on this passionate Yelper. John was a pleasure to work with I've worked with him two times. He is extremely responsive and remembers me which is nice! I had him work on fixing a leak on the roof and in the kitchen. He was very honest and gave me a good price. I probably could have gotten cheaper but he is licensed and knows what he's doing so I rather get the job done right the first time. I highly recommend him to others and he got the job done in one day! Definitely will be using him on future projects. Absolutely horrible and I give them ZERO stars even though I cannot "Post" unless I give them one star. I ordered a voucher for a Roof Tune Up because I bought a home and needed maybe four to six shingles replaced and wanted it done before we could expect any rain. I left five messages before getting a call back to schedule. After finally getting a call back from an older gentleman who said he would be the one to come out. He scheduled, without my knowing, his son, to come out just over three weeks later. The morning of my long awaited appointment one man called to confirm and another called to reschedule, said he would call first thing Monday. I advised of our work schedules saying my husband is home first by 3:00 and he asked if he could get home any earlier. He seriously expected my husband to leave work early to accommodate his need to reschedule. Monday came and went, no call. On Tuesday I left two messages in the morning (at each cell phone number I was given) and two late afternoon/early evening. No call back from either. Wednesday I called both numbers again in the morning as well as late afternoon/early evening. No calls back. Today is Thursday and keep in mind it poured on Wednesday. I am sick to my stomach over their horrible customer service and the fact that they cannot return any of my phone calls. Their name IS the name of the business and don't perform which is mind blowing. I feel like I have been scammed and can't wait for the refund of my money that I paid well over a month ago. Me needing to make 15 calls is beyond excessive. I would not recommend this company to anybody. He price was right and seemed great at first. Hired him to paint my new condo and resurface my ceiling. He subcontracted a guy he never worked with, took his cut, and left the guy to do his thing. Never came back to check on the work. I had to pay the guy myself instead of paying John, then John paying the guy. Very unprofessional. They guy finished at night and I wasn't able to clearly see his finished work until day. He didn't tape the edges so they were off, he missed a bunch of spots, and John stopped taking my calls. I guess I know what to ask next time I hire a painter. I don't live in San Diego like he says. When I find the hand written contract from him I will post it on the internet and provide a link to it to prove I have the right guy. It was a father and son (Irish I think). After a very positive initial experience, we needed to call John back to fix a part of the initial repair. He went from being incredibly detail oriented and on top of things to completely unprofessional... After trying repeatedly to reach him over the course of a couple months, we finally had give up, because the guy NEVER CALLED BACK. And now I see, reading a few other reviews, that we are not the only ones that had this problem. Bummer. I would go with another contractor if you have a choice. I had John come out to get me an estimate on some roof repair I did. He was scheduled for 10am and showed up past noon. Which threw off my other schedules of contractors I had lined up to come out. The good thing is he was prepared and did bring his own ladder and flashlight which most of the other roofing contractors didn't do. He did sort of look at my roof. He didn't go into the crawl space, but he did poke his head through the opening. He told me what needed to be done. I asked for an estimate and he was afraid to give me one. He said he didn't want to misquote me and that the price of wood has gone up so it might in fact be lower now and he would have to go back to the office to check. I said ok let's say it's not lower and just give me the estimate for wood at today's price. So he gave me his quote which is probably on the high end just so he doesn't have to make an increase later on. He said he would email me the exact quote that day when he got back to the office. After several days, I called and he said he is on his way back to the office now and he'll send it. After a couple more days I called again and he said he was on his way back to the office and he'll send it right away, sounds familiar. So in the end I what I took away is that he's a few hours late and doesn't follow though. It's also very hard for me to get a hold of him. Most of the time I call it goes straight to voice mail so there was no communication. I left voice mails, but again no return calls. So sad because he was really nice and I would have loved for him to do the work. I would have also loved to write a strong 5 star review instead of this. Pretty disappointed in him. read more

Mr. Day showed up at my house on time and prepared to do the roof inspection that I had purchased through Amazon Local. He replaced a few shingles that were lifting and then recommended that we fix the flashing around my chimney and repair a roof gutter (valley) that was digging into the attic. I agreed. He was a very nice man and he agreed that my roof was in great condition. Before he left I asked him to provide me with something I could give to my insurance to show them my roof was in great condition, so that they would cover the roof again. I never heard back from him. I have called him multiple times and left messages and emailed him but still 6 months after the service was performed, he refuses to call me back. Mr. Day seems like a nice business man, but the more I read reviews of his services from here and other sites I am discovering that his lack of response to previous customers is the norm and NOT the exception. All I needed was a letter from Mr. Day stating what he told me when he was at my house and this would have been all A's and B's, instead he get's D's and F's for the lack of responsiveness. ***** Beware *** Slick talker - doesn't follow through! I too purchased the Living Social roof tune up deal. John Sr came out the day I called - Took pictures of "my" roof and told me there was major repair that needed to be done but I didn't need a new roof.- the estimate was $1,500. To be fair I did think that I need "some" work but wasn't counting on $1,500. He was such a smooth talker and was kind enough to lower the amount to $1,200 instantly. After talking a bit more I explained I was looking for a reputable contractor as I had a number of very large projects I was going to do - he dropped the cost to $1,000 and said they'd begin working immediately. He had a worker with him and John proceeded to tell me all about this guy and how he "saved" him and continued to talk about how he is a Godly and a honorable man. I bought it hook line and sinker! He told me that there's a warranted and he'd come back next year to tune it up. They were done in less than an hour - I handed him my check and off they went. It was only then that I realized the Fast Talker didn't bother to give me an invoice to show the work that he had done. He RAN to the bank to cash my check within 20 minutes of leaving my house. I have contacted him over the past 3 months asking for a invoice or receipt and either get no response or a promise that I'll have it the next day. It seems that this is a father/son business and John Sr blames his son for lack of communication. I tried to have him do the "right thing" and not to resort to a bad review but he truly is not reputable in any way. *** beware **** My next steps is to hire a roofing company - see what he did if anything for my $1,000 and document with actual pictures of MY roof. Sorry to resort to this - I've tried for two months to get John Day back out to my home to fix a leaky roof (he came out in April to repair the roof but after $750 it did not work and the roof still leaks as badly as before). Update (8/15/14): So shortly after I posted a negative review, I was contacted by the company. John (very apologetic) came out last week and re-repaired the roof. At this point I'm a little leery about updating the review (until I see how the roof performs in the rain) but I'll go with four stars. In August of 2013, I bought John Day's $99 roof tune-up on Living Social. He showed up with his son, John Jr., and they had a look. He informed me I needed some additional work done to avoid potential leaks. As a rather trusting soul (and a fairly handy guy, but no roofing expert), I took his advice and paid him an additional $800 (having already spent $99 on the "tune-up" deal). The cost seemed a little excessive, but, again, I'm no roofing expert. Then, in late 2014, we had a very heavy storm and I incurred some damage to my bathroom ceiling due to a leak in the roof. After unsuccessfully attempting to seal the leak once myself, I called John and he came out in December to have a look. He took measures rather similar to what I had done, as well as applying some sort of silver hot seal material along a couple roof/wall junctions, and charged me $650. I wondered what sort of voodoo he had performed that would be successful where I hadn't, but I figured he was the expert. He also addressed another concern I had about a different area of the roof, that seemed as if the underlying plywood was soggy and sagging, by heating it with a blowtorch and applying some sort of waterproof spray. Each time John came out, it felt like I was getting an upsell. He's a charming, friendly guy (as is his son), and he always offers to give me a "good deal" if I'll have him do the work right then, checking with John Jr. to see if they have enough of the necessary materials there in the truck, which they always do. I've always had an underlying suspicion that I was being taken advantage of, but I also want to take proper care of my roof, and I don't like to assume someone is being less than completely honest with me. I had a recollection that John had said he'd come back out in a year to respray the sagging area, so I attempted to contact him in March of 2016 (a little more than a year later). We emailed back and forth with him saying they normally don't respray unless there is a problem, but he'd be happy to come by and have a look anyway. He never did, however, and after nudging him repeatedly, I finally gave up. Finally, six months later (last September), he and John Jr. just showed up at my house one afternoon out of the blue, saying he was there for my "annual inspection" or something like that. He proceeded to tell me about how he'd fallen off a ladder straight onto his head and almost died, showing me pictures on his iPhone of his injuries. I was sympathetic and thankful for his rather miraculous recovery. He climbed up on the roof to have a look and declared that there was a serious problem with the sagging area that needed to be addressed, which basically consisted of gluing the shingles onto each successive layer below. For this service he charged me $375. Thankfully, as always, he had the required materials with him. Since his initial "fixing" of my leak problem, I hadn't seen water coming through my bathroom ceiling, but we hadn't had a heavy rainfall since that time (we've been in a serious drought, remember?). When a heavy, sustained rainfall finally did occur last month (January, 2017), I found the leak still there in the exact same place (I climbed into the attic again to confirm this). Had he ever actually fixed it? We may never know. Thankfully I hadn't repaired the damage to my bathroom ceiling, or it would have been damaged all over again. I climbed onto the roof in the rain and slathered a bunch of Henry 208 on the area where the leak seemed to originate, which seemed to quell the problem, at least temporarily. On Jan 21, while it was still raining, I think, I called John and left messages at both his office number and on his cell phone, and also sent him an email for good measure. I wasn't pushy or angry, acknowledging that he must be very busy with all the rain, but asked him to give me a timeframe for when he might be able to come address the problem. I have yet to hear a word from him. My roof is now leaking worse than ever with this big February storm, so I think I'm going to have to call someone else since John is MIA. John is a nice guy and has certainly worked on my roof, but I've paid him almost $2000 to date, and the one problem I actually know I had may never have been properly repaired. I know fixing a leaky roof isn't an exact science, but with John I always feel I'm being sold things I don't need and/or overcharged. Responding to phone calls and emails goes a long way to earning my trust; that should be the number one rule of business. John simply is not reliable and possibly not even honest. I think it's time for me to find a roofer I trust. read more

John and his son are a great resource for us. They originally worked on our roof back in April in Woodland Hills after the spring rains caused a pretty bad leak. Fast forward to November when it started raining again, we found that the leak wasn't completely fixed so John and his son came back up and spent a day finding the new leak and reinforcing the original work. And after last week's rains it seems like it's all fixed. Very professional, prompt and courteous. Would definitely recommend John to friends and family. read more

I live in Pasadena and after experiencing the Apocalypse of the Santa Ana winds, I needed roof repair ASAP. I called John based on a referral I received from a friend and he came out the same day because he was fortunately in Pasadena already inspecting another home which had its roof blown off. John inspected my roof damage and gave me his estimate. To my surprise, the damage wasn't as bad as I expected. John's estimate was fair, and he actually did the work the same day. So not only did he give me a fair price, he was done with the repairs the same day. Here is the kicker, he came back the next day, which was Saturday to check up and go over all the work he did. There was some tar that dripped from the roof which he cleaned up. He went over all the repairs as well as maintenance tips. Then, on Sunday the tar dripped again, so his son came to my house on Monday morning to clean up the tar and add another sealant to prevent the tar from dripping. The dripping is normal, it just takes time to dry. Overall I would definitely use him again for any future roof work as well as GC work. He also does additions. Thanks John and John Jr! read more

I got three separate bids for some repairs to my fairly new Spanish tile roof & as an afterthought had them look at my older flat garage roof that was leaking. I got 2 referrals and pulled John Day from Yelp. I spoke to John's son and set an appointment for an estimate. Unlike the two other contractors I had come out, John Day showed up on time. The fact that John himself came out also impressed me. I know roofers can be busy, but the others that came out seemed like 3rd parties hired to do estimates. Anyway John was nice enough and gave me a verbal bid for the minor tile repairs, which was higher than the others. As for my garage, where the other roofers all recommended a costly rebuild of the roof, John assured me that it simply needed to be resurfaced with an elastomeric coating that he could apply for far less cost. I requested a bid in writing, asking him to email it to me. I received it the following day. I did the math. Even with the tile repair estimate being higher, if I included the garage, it ended up being significantly less than the other bids. The way I figured it I could go with a cheaper company for the tile repair, forgoing the garage, or go with John. The fact is my experience with the two other estimates did not inspire confidence. One I felt would have done the work on the cheap and they both appeared to be trying to sell me something (a new garage roof) that I didn't really need. Honestly I also liked and trusted John. I should also mention that I have been thinking about adding a second story to my garage in the next 5-7 years or so. With all that in mind, going with John and coating the garage roof seemed the way forward. John came later that week an hour early, but happy to wait. He had one person to help him. He took care of all the work in less than half a day and fixed my chimney cap to boot (it had come loose in all the heavy rains we had over the winter). Overall I am pleased with my decision and very happy with the work. I see a reviewer mentioning disappointment with John's lack of providing paperwork. I agree, this is not John's strong point and the only reason I took off a star. But when I asked for it, I got it. And when he completed the job I provided him with a copy of his bid, notated the warranty he offered and he signed it as completed and paid in full. In comparison to some of the other paperwork that I got with my other bids, I think it would serve John well to have complete certification, licensing and insurance info included with his estimates. John has old world sensibilities, but in this day and age that unfortunately isn't enough. I worked with these guys to fix a leaking roof at one of my properties in WEST LOS ANGELES. This is a VERY pooorly run business. Working with these guys was a joke. I was lied to a number of times. As indicated by so many other Living Social complaints, I have to add my name to the growing list. We paid $100 for the roof tune up and an extra $800 for the repairs 'out of the scope' only to find out that our roof had the same leak this past week in the same locations where they had said the problem would have been solved with my $800 dollar repair. I tried to call them - never could get through. Left messages to have them return my call. Never did. The gutters were also supposed to have been cleaned and sealed with the tune up special. Nope! We had an additional leak in another part of the house because of clogged gutters. Dang it all. These guys are jerks and rip-offs. I CAN however recommend HOYT roofing in Anaheim. Paint job ended up was great but the prep up work was the worst! They smashed a tail gate that my husband had in the backward right into my husbands classic soon to be restored to cars windshield . I contracted John (the dad)and John (the son)and they accused us of doing this to the car and tried to wipe their hands clean. Now this is a direct insult being that they claim to be honest and full of integrity. They have been lying to me saying that they will pay for the windshield and bring me a check. This has been going on since December. It is now going into April and no check! No call back! These people ( owners )come and collect the money from you for the job and are present there at the job until they get the money and leave.but when you need you're money back after they damaged personal things they disappear and never make right! I am not happy, I would recommend that EVERYONE pull reviews and reports before considering them. They also picked up workers from Home Depot the last day of the job- the guys told me that they didn't know the owners and that they were hired the day of to do our job. This is not professional, not licensed workers or insured I suppose. Major risk!!!!! For a living social deal, John Day Sr and his contractor, Brent, stopped by this morning to look at my roof . The living social deal includes basic roof recovery for 10 shingles or 5 tiles. This deal was perfect because my neighbor pointed out that some of my tiles were loose. However, since the tarp was exposed for 1-2 years (which I wasn't aware of), the plywood was visible at 3 locations. This was not included in the living social deal. John was able to draw up a competitive quote, that I agreed to, and started working immediately. John was 5 minutes earlier than the appointed time at 10am and was done by noon. Great job and detailed explanations on the work required. I was educated and comforted with the work completed. Part of the work agreement was that John or one of his team members will come back in a year to check on the workmanship. I called all the yelp* roofers with decent reviews. John Day was the one that returned the call and able to be on the job soon. He was in the area and able to put a few concrete roof tiles in order, do some caulking on some fixtures, and put a new pile of cement on top of the roof where needed to hold some tiles. Pricing was comparable to others. Work seems fine. Everything done as expected. He guaranteed his work for 3 years and will do any caulking, adjustments, or cement work needed to maintain the concrete tile roof - no additional charge. read more

I found this contractor through a Google Offer for a roof inspection and minor repairs. John Day and his associate were able to come on a Saturday morning (very convenient!) to do the inspection and repairs, afterward he recommended more work to protect my old roof and make it last a few more years before replacement. I did some research that day and found his quote to be fair, so I called again to schedule and John's son was able to come back the same day to do the work. I wish I could have paid by credit card rather than check. I was also a bit annoyed with the way John "man-splained" the roof work to me. He told my husband that we needed a sealant on the roof, but when speaking to me he felt the need to use a nail polish analogy.......I don't think he was trying to be disrespectful, both he and his associate were otherwise very personable, but definitely rubbed me the wrong way. We also purchased the roof tune-up on Living Social. John missed his first appointment with me, but did finally come and repair the leak in our roof. I was so happy! BUT, the next rain came and the roof leaked. This was nearly two months ago. My phone calls and emails went unanswered. We finally set up a date for him to repair the roof (he was so adamant about how they stand behind their work) ... and he didn't show up! We set another appointment, confirmed by email ... and he didn't show up again. I've decided to cut my losses and find a reliable roofer who could fix the leak the he repaired inadequately. My husband and I found John Day Construction through a living social coupon to do a roof tune-up and inspection. John Day Sr. and his contractor arrived on time and was incredibly professional and knowledgable. We knew we had roof issues found in the recent inspection report prior to closing so we hired him to further inspect and do the roof tune-up. He was able to readily identify all issues, explain using pictures and do the remedial repairs that same day at a competitive price. We also had some issues with leaks from the recent storm and they reviewed the issue and determined it was due an missing caulk on the window. Even though this window repair was outside of his scope he repaired it as a favor to us. Overall, he was fantastic to work with! Very pleasant, reliable and gave incredible service. They did the service that was included in the deal, but also fixed two areas where water was seeping in for an additional $425. I'll need him to come back to fix the roof caps for $950. I wasn't present while John was there, but my fiancé was. He told me that John seems like an honest guy, and he even walked him through the repairs that he was doing. I said yes to his offer knowing that he will guarantee his work for 3 years and that he was even willing to paint the stain on my ceiling caused by the roof leak. I had a great experience with John Day General Contractor. We live in Rosemead and our poor roof barely survived the horrible wind storms. The business is run by a father and son, John Sr. and John Jr. Even though they were swamped with clients, John Jr. was prompt and professional with my initial inquiry. They gave me a very fair quote (I compared the quote with another roofing contractor) and guarantee their work for three years. John Sr. also spoke to me personally on the phone and thoroughly explained my roof damage and honestly told me what repairs were urgent versus unnecessary. The best thing was that he told us our roof would last us another 10 years. That was such a relief because our fear was that most contractors would try to convince us to replace our roof since it was so old. Their assistants came out the next day and were very friendly and hardworking. Not only that, John Sr. gave me a (small) discount because of the holidays and said he would come by after the New Year to check on his assistants' work. I found John Day through a LivingSocial offer for a roof tune-up. Not knowing anything about him, I felt I was taking a bit of a chance, but the price was worth the risk and my roof needed some attention. Right from the beginning, I could not have been more pleased with this guy; super nice, well spoken, never pushy, very knowledgeable guy. There were a few other places on the roof that needed fixing which were not covered in the tune-up, but John explained everything very clearly, then gave me a reasonable quote, and the issues were fixed that day. We even discussed other things around my home that will be needing attention and I appreciated all of his suggestions, and mostly his honesty. I have had a number of other general contractors do work on my house, but this was the first time I felt that I was getting help from someone that cared. I have worked in construction for over 10 years. I am a sub contractor that recently worked with a John Day General Contractor. The were very professional and did a great job at painting the home for which we did the rain gutters. John was patient with a customer who was looking for a very unique color combination and offered several suggestions to please the customer. In the end the customer got just what they wanted. For a living social deal, John Day and a helper stopped by to look at my roof. The deal was for a roof tune up which included replacing a few broken tiles. I called for an appointment but they were pretty booked up which was understandable with the LS deal. I took the next available appointment they had which was about 2 months out. After they had worked on my roof for a little bit I went outside and asked if I had any broken tiles. They told me that none of the tiles were broken but that I needed the tar paper under my roof replaced. This was very concerning to me so I asked for an estimate. Unfortunately the estimate was more money than I had in savings at the time so I told them I would not be able to do the repairs for a little while. At that point I started to get a lot of attitude from John. I explained to him that I wanted the repairs but couldn't afford it right now. He yelled up to the worker on the roof "Let's go they aren't getting the work done". The worker finished what he was doing and got down from the roof. As they left they warned me "If it rains before the repairs are done you are going to have damage to your home". The way he said the last statement seemed weird to me so after they left I decided to get a ladder and go up on the roof and inspect the area they said had the worst damage. To my surprise they had removed one of the tiles so that the tar paper was exposed. I also decided to look around and quickly found four broken tiles. At this point I felt taken advantage of and my trust had been lost. I will be going with another contractor even if it costs me more. read more

Robin said it best. As a Marine, I too am a stickler for attention to detail. John and his son do a terrific job and I can't find any fault in their work. As I write this review, we're going through probably one of the worst rain season southern California has seen in a long time. John and his crew came to our house on very short notice, gave us a great price, and worked on it right away. Thanks to him getting right down to business, and fixing our roof for a terrific price, we're weathering this storm with our hearts at ease. One thing that I was very impressed with was John's ethics in what he does. After John inspected our roof, he found a few more leaks that we were unaware of. Afraid of how much more the repair would cost, my mother reiterated that she just wanted the leak we knew of to be fixed. John flat out said, that he would not do a project where he knew more problems would occur and do nothing to fix it. He wasn't doing it just for the money, he wanted to do work that he could stand by. That sealed the deal for me. For me, I'll pay a premium for honesty, and with John, I get that on a discount. After reading through his semi positive reviews, we chose to obtain a quote from Mr Day for some major home renos we needed done on a new home we purchased. He arrived promptly and was very friendly and knowledgable at our initial consultation. Almost two weeks later we are STILL waiting on a quote or even a response from him. We have left two voicemails and have not received any call back. Nice guy but not at all worth the hassle. If its this hard to get a hold of him to GIVE him your money, how hard is it gonna be when he needs to repair something under warranty later on for free? read more

I needed repairs and exterior painting done on my house and called John Day because of the overall 4+ star Yelp rating. John Day, the CEO of the company came by on May 24 to look at the house and asked me for my email address so he could send me a written estimate. I emailed him on May 28 to ask for the written estimate and he promptly emailed me back and promised to send me the estimate in the afternoon. I emailed him again on May 29 to tell him that I had not received his bid and asked him if he had decided not to bid on the job. He promptly emailed me back that he would check the office the next morning to find out why I did not get the bid. He also said that he definitely wanted to do the work. Today is June 3, I have not heard from him or received a bid. I consider myself lucky that he did not bid and I did not hire him for the job after my experience and looking at the 1, 2 and 3 star reviews for John Day General Contractor.
