It manufactured…read morethe famous Walt Disney Invisible Dog Party Trick, which is how this spacious place received its name in 1863. Now it is a gem of an Art Center. Greatly stumbling upon it while walking down the street to get my food takeout order made me glad because I truly miss going to art galleries/museums/beautiful art exhibits, etc. Seeing the cool artistically created blue bench outside and peering through the front door made me want to view everything. On display is "The Other Side" exhibit by Brothers Steven + William Ladd. Working w/ over 500 inmates within 8 different Correctional Facilities over the last 9 years, these artists bonded w/ them while collaborating w/ them to create masterpieces. Seems truly therapeutic for all involved in the experience! "The Other Side" includes various installations, paintings, drawings, etc. The "Jail Cell" has words lining all in it from responses gathered around the question "What One Word Defines Incarceration For You? "Isolation" was inspired by the experience of seeing an inmate inside a 6-foot cell for causing a jail lockdown. The "Metal Doors and Pathway" consisted of an entire walkway that we could walk down while viewing all of the art throughout the exhibit. It is designed to let you see the structure of what the brothers viewed as they were scanned into the facility before meeting w/ the inmates. Colorful paintings were also on the walls depicting the work that has inspired and that continues to inspire the artists. All in all, it was a deeply.moving exhibit that speaks to social injustices, oppression, lack of humanity and a calll to action that is needed. Sometimes there are poetry readings or singers to entertain in special weekend events. There are also single theme group shows from time to time (eg, small works), typically curated and exhibiting work by non-member contributors.

People I could never get to step a toe in a museum now beg me to come with them to see some trendy exhibit they heard about. Marketing has improved immensely. They've expanded their reach beyond geeks and schoolchildren to a wide variety of people, and that's good. It keeps the museum alive. It's just no longer one of my favorite places personally. What I miss the most are the old First Saturdays that no one knew about. I'd look forward to them all month like a child looks forward to Christmas. It felt like Brooklyn's best kept secret. Now you have to preregister to get sardined. I'm not much of a noisy crowd person, so I end up leaving early the rare occasion I attempt to go. I do enjoy the salsa parties. Those are fun. Staff can be rude as all else. I've never personally had an issue, but I've seen some uncalled for behavior towards other patrons, especially if they give touristy vibes. The littlest thing can set someone off. It's completely uncalled for.

I had to move my appointment a couple times bc of last minute issues and not once was I treated with less-than awesome communication. Maya took time showing care and detail even with other projects in her pipeline. She made the process super enjoyable for me and helped me perfect a default format for my photography that I'd been struggling with. I was quite specific about my preferences bc of my past negative experiences and she wasn't fazed at all. These guys met my short-window turnaround with ease. My final prints were beyond what I expected and my client was super happy. I can't recommend them highly enough and I cannot wait to work with them in the future.

The project involved removing 47 original 8x10"photos, scanning and digitizing each in high resolution, printing a set on contemporary, high quality paper and inserting the prints into an album provided. Brooklyn Editions far exceeded the basic requirements in every step of the process. Well beyond the original expectations, Brooklyn Editions stepped in to assist in an otherwise futile search for a suitable album.
