I was looking to get a photograph framed and a close friend told me about Artful Framing. It's a gem of a Takoma Park neighborhood frame shop. Dilip Sheth, the owner is fantastic and advised me throughout the process, helping me to decide on what type of frame would work best, mat color and size, and whether to go with a white border around the photograph or not (I met with Dilip before I had the print made). We've been here a number of times for framing. Chief among which was my wife's 200 year old sampler. We've had fantastic service every time, and we're at the point where we pretty much just follow their framing recommendations. Their work is very thoughtful and intentional. For example, they preserved the original backing of the sampler with the names of all the women in the family back to 1818 in a special pouch design. I 100% would recommend this place for both the smallest jobs and the most important ones. The owner has a great eye for the frames. The Artful Gallery is not your typical gallery. It's you and the art. The Artful Gallery appears to be a home that has been turned into a gallery which makes it an intimate and charming space to view art . When you first walk in the paintings on the wall jump out because the hallway is so narrow. Once passed the entrance there is a small viewing room filled with paintings. In this room there is more space to move around and review the work. The second room in the gallery is the largest and gives you a chance to step back and take it all in. There is a kitchen and a patio area attached to the gallery that was open when I was there for opening night but I am not sure if it is open on regular days. I was there for the opening of New Orleans: Spirit a' Risen exhibit that featured street artists from New Orleans. We took a set of 7 Olly Moss prints here for framing. Considering we had already dropped several hundred dollars on the prints themselves, my husband and I were willing to shell out some additional monies for a quality framing job. Artful Framing & Gallery is conveniently located walking distance from our apartment, so we popped in on a Monday afternoon with our set of prints. The owner was very helpful in helping us pick out frames and matting for all 7 prints, and he gave us a discount since we were having so many framed at once. My only complaint is that they never called when the prints were ready; my husband had to call and follow up himself. I'm so happy with my experience at Artful Framing & Gallery and would like to share it. I had never gotten anything framed before and wanted to get some vintage uncut sheets of cards framed. They are quite fragile and I didn't want anything to happen to them. I went to two frame shops before Artful Framing. The first seemed ok but didn't blow me away and the second I would never entrust something important with. I was really hoping that Artful Framing would work out. I was immediately impressed when I went in. The owner is an artist, very professional, and friendly. He had several framed pieces waiting to go out and they looked incredibly sharp. I explained that I hadn't gotten anything framed before and he walked me through the options. There was no pressure at all and the price he quoted was outstanding. I upgraded the glass pane for my favorite one of the three to museum glass-- and I love the way it turned out. It's truly like the glass isn't there at all. I was prompted to post this, since I received a Facebook survey, and meant to do this for a long time. I can't say enough great things about this place, and Dilip. My saga began when I took a limited edition lithograph by Hirschfeld (I collect them), to Michaels for matting and framing. You get what you pay for. When I picked it up, there were pencil marks. The manager did try to rectify, but needless to say I was furious. These things ain't cheap, and are an investment. I can't even remember how I found Artful Framing, but when I took it over there, Dilip was very familiar with Hirschfeld, and it's value. He cleaned it up beautifully, and the recommendations for the matting, glass and frame were amazing. Sold! Customer for life. As I said, I have invested in these, and have since taken 4 others over for framing. Each time, his eye is amazing. I will say this is not like buying a frame from CVS, but if you have artwork of value, it costs some, but, again, you get what you pay for. His pricing is very fair for the quality, he gives you realistic time frames, and always on time delivery. Not to mention, he is a gem to work with, and a very talented artist in his own right. Fantastic work framing a magazine cover & article! The owner was very friendly and recommended a nice combination of colors for the frame & mat that turned out looking better than what I was initially envisioning. They were able to cleanly cut the article and the magazine cover from the full issue and matted and framed it very elegantly. I liked that they only offer high quality frames and UV filtering glass to prevent fading. I will certainly return to this shop for any additional framing needs. I've used them before for framing a custom embroidery piece, and when we purchased art for our new home, I convinced my partner to give Artful a try. The owner made our process so easy, and helped us pick frames for 3 entirely different pieces in under 30 minutes. An 1800's vintage map? Oh, this frame and mat works PERFECTLY for old maps. Boom. A 1930's black and white lithograph? My partner says, "I want something rustic, beachy, to emphasize the picture." Boom - three excellent options, and we picked our favorite. Lastly, we had an almost 200-year-old watercolor that we didn't know how to showcase. The owner found a way to preserve the original, beautiful French matting, and the perfect frame to highlight the colors in the piece. As a former framer myself I know quality work when I see it. Artful Framing is my number one choice to get museum quality framing and Dilip, whom I met while working at another frame shop, is very knowledgeable and has an excellent eye. He, and the young lady that works there, are very friendly and very good at what they do. I've bought frames there that range from about $40 to about $300 and it is all very well done. Very friendly staff (I mainly worked with Dilip), I had 6 frames done there and got a good deal. Unfortunately, I don't know too much about customized framing and this was my first experience. So I don't know if this is as good as it gets, but it should be pretty close. Dilip has excellent taste as far as matting and the frame. All the frames had a coated wire hanger and rubber stoppers/spacers and from what I understand about framing, the quality was great. I would recommend this framer to all. read more
