I was nervous going into it, but our instructor Tiffany had such a fun and easy going demeanor that she eased any nerves right away. The class was beginner ballet, and I think for someone with no prior experience it can be a little tricky. With that said, Tiffany did a great job going over all the movements and combinations. There were dancers of all skill levels which made it a really welcoming environment too! The class was an hour and started with barre and then went into some floor combinations. Matthew has thoughtfully designed each session to be a high class experience, from the moment you walk in - you're greeted by a beautiful open space, mats, bolsters, blocks, weighted eye masks, and blankets. There's a printed card which covers the details of each session provided ahead of the class that outlines the experience. The session itself is calming, deep, and a much needed disconnect from the chaos of the outside world. Afterwards he offers herbal tea and some of us spend time socializing before heading out. It's a unique experience that benefits busy people with busy lives and offers much needed self care.

Two vogue classes I've taken here were low-key kind of traumatizing for me. I've been dancing for a while and I normally enjoy my dance classes, but I hate the way that Damon often attacks the idea of masculinity in this class and it left me feeling deeply disrespected as an enby person. I hadn't felt that energetically misaligned and uncomfortable in a space in 10 years. I felt pressured to mask autistic traits because I was singled out for not masking those traits, making the environment very ableist. That day, I felt on the non-speaking spectrum and it was like he was trying to explain to me what was happening in the room socially, as if I didn't know. I *did* know, I just did not want to engage in the social dynamics as an autistic person who came to dance, not to socialize verbally that night. I feel perfectly fine not "fitting in" in a space, just let me not fit in! Just let me exist! I felt consistently projected upon instead of *seen*. I came in, confident and empowered as usual, and left feeling worse. My favorite vogue teacher here only teaches advanced classes now and I'm looking to figure out how I can test into her class so I can continue having an autistic-friendly, enby-friendly voguing space again.

I will admit I was a little nervous the first couple of classes, simply because I didn't know what to expect and I am by no means a "good" dancer. By that I mean I haven't taken any professional dance courses or training, I came here just as an alternative to gym workouts. I quickly realized I had nothing to be nervous about. The studio's owner and main instructor, Damon, promotes a judgment free environment where all experience levels are welcome! His joy, and positive, goofy energy is so infectious I found myself with a huge smile on my face, and a full heart. Afterwards I decided to keep coming back and bought a full monthly membership to the studio after my groupon expired. Over the past year I've taken bodyburn, restorative mobility, yoga and even tried out a contemporary class! I love all the different types of dance classes available here and the warm and welcoming community that never fails to brighten my day. I'm now a regular member and try to come to classes here 3 times a week as my regular fitness routine. I cannot recommend this studio enough, if you enjoy dancing and want to change up your fitness routine this is the perfect place to go! I also really like that for bodyburn we get a new dance routine every couple weeks I like to show off what new moves I learn to my friends and family!

She started at 3 years and has been with the same group of girls since starting. They are now her pals! The atmosphere is welcoming, kind and supportive. Miss Nicole (her teacher and owner) is a savant with the kids. They love her and are always so excited to see her. She teaches a well organized class that covers dance basics in a fun and creative way. The location is super convenient - big parking lot with a Dominics, Old Navy, Marshalls and Starbucks in easy walking distance! The facilities are great and well kept. The business is run smoothly, efficiently, and the communication is fantastic! I never feel like I wasn't notified about something or that I'm out of the loop! I would highly recommend Collective Dance to anyone wanting to put their child into a dance class. For anyone with young kids or had young kids, for a 3 year old to say this, it must be a pattern of behavior. It broke our hearts. And to cap off the experience, the night of the recital, my wife and I admit we forgot to pay the remaining balance with everything else going on in our lives (expecting baby #2 in 3 weeks to name the biggest). Nicole greeted my wife and mother-in-law in quite possibly the rudest and most disrespectful way imaginable...."I don't have time for this tonight. She can't come in until you pay!" Thankfully we had enough cash to pay, but she released our tickets the day before and would have sent us home for an oversight we clearly were willing to pay. She caused a scene, and it was completely out of line. Her tone, demeanor, attitude, and overall treatment of people she doesn't care for is unbelievably disappointing and unfortunate. Not to mention, the lack of organization at the recital, the lack of food and drinks for young kids, etc. was all shocking (it was from 4-7p). Wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Love, love, love A Fairytale Ballet…read more I was desperate to find a drop-in ballet class for a visiting three-year-old this summer, a task that is not easy to do in Chicago, despite the plethora of ballet studios for kids in the city. Most require that students sign up for the entire session, and our little one was only going to be in town for two weeks. After consider Yelping, I found A Fairytale Ballet and discovered that they offered summer camp options in the summer. After a brief email correspondence, I learned that A Fairytale Ballet offers a la carte options during the summer, meaning that children can go once or twice a week for as many weeks as they choose. It's perfect for families going on vacation or testing the ballet waters with a little one. What I really love about A Fairytale Ballet is that they bring literature to life. Each week, the summer camp classes focused on a particular story, such as Beauty and the Beast and Angelina Ballerina. The teacher reads parts of the story each day, and then the students act out the scenes from the book with props that they make themselves. For example, during Beauty and the Beast week, the students decorated notebooks with foam letters and stickers, then danced as Belle, visiting the "bookstore." They put on shawls to "search" for their father in the woods. It was such a wonderful way to help expand children's imaginations and instill a love for literature. And the studio! Absolutely adorable! They've painted the walls with bright, colorful murals that just make you happy to be there. They even have a little door for the students to walk through. Parents can watch the class through the windows, which isn't always allowed at ballet studios, but very much appreciated here since we wanted to take lots of pictures. The teachers are wonderful too. Miss Ashley was absolutely delightful - we really appreciated that she approached us after class to tell us how our little one did. And Miss Dana...well, our little one just loved her. I really cannot say enough good things about the teachers, or the studio for that matter.
