We decided to learn how to dance cha cha cha from square one for our wedding, and Michael Angelo got us through in less than 2 months. Learning how to dance with M.A. on a 1:1 level was an amazing experience. His experience in the dancing arts were demonstrated in the way he was able to understand the needs of our different learning styles - both rhythmically and kinesiologically. One thing that always deterred me from learning how to dance was not knowing if someone could be so patient with me, which M.A. proved to have. His teaching experience made it all go by so smoothly. From learning their basic steps and fundamentals, to song selection, brain storming, mixing the music and choreography - we worked together in less than 2 months before our wedding to put everything together, meeting only once a week. Now we drop in the studio every week to keep brushing up on our salsa and cha cha cha skills!

You can take classes at this place in Humboldt Park -- no experience required!!!

YOU SHOULD BE DANCING, YEAH Whether you've got two left feet (like me) or emerged from the womb doing a lively bachata, it never hurts to take a lesson. My awesomesauce girlfriend "surprised" me with an impromptu class on a Friday night in late January, excited to learn the basics of Latin dancing with her partner -- me! I was a little hesitant because I'm SUPER white and have #whiteboyrhythm, but I managed just fine. Though we were tardy in arriving (what else is new?), the instructor Miguel got us going right away. We began with a simple cha-cha-cha and then progressed to a slightly more complex merengue. The pace was easygoing enough that even when we lost the beat, we could get right back into it no problem. Eventually we moved on to bachata and salsa, including some extremely cool behind-the-back maneuvers that had me feeling like Tony Manero in Saturday Night Fever. Miguel was very friendly and laid-back, not at all the overly intense dance instructor I had envisioned. Most of the class were singles, so everyone rotated with partners...... except for us. And THANK GOD, because I didn't want some random pendejo with his hands around my woman, especially as fine as she looked that night! I appreciate the fact he let us stick together as a couple. The studio space was nice and the bathroom -- though small -- was also clean. Located in the Boricua district of Chicago, the Dance Academy of Salsa offers up some highly informative lessons with a terrific instructor at a very reasonable price. I'm grateful to have had a chance to learn some new things and I would definitely recommend that anyone wishing to do similarly book a slot now! Thanks to this place in Humboldt Park, you too can feel like John Travolta** walking down the boulevard with your fancy moves and stylish attitude. ** paint can and disco shoes not included

Arrrrreeeeebaaaaaa!!!! Dear Dancers & dancers to be. Here's the story! My friends and I were searching for a spot to get our cha cha on! Im on a mission to master the bachata and salsa. I decided to give this place a go. It was my first choice. So I went....ALONE that is. I had to make sure it was a good spot to share with friends. Call me the tester!!!! $15 for Drop in classes. (Hard to beat) Schedule online (lots of options) They take cash/credit/debt (convenient) Lots of parking (pay for park) So, I get it. It's hard to do things like this alone but TRUST ME...if I did it then SO CAN YOU!!!! I was comfortable in no time. Michael Angelo was my instructor! He was amazing. Loved his energy. He was fun to learn with. The studio is so nice, clean and large. I did the bachata and I'm going back to try out the salsa classes and possibly get private lessons Telling all my friends ...family...& all you lovely people! So Who wants to dance with me? Well, what are you waiting for!? Just DROP IN ;) you will have so much fun. TRY IT. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain! Xoxo, Your dancing Chica Koko

Ask the Community - Dance Academy of Salsa

What should students wear? Any special shoes?

I wouldn't wear sneakers or any shoe that would inhibit your ability to turn and or spin. Sneakers are not good shoes to wear. A lot of ladies wear heels, and they seem comfortable in them. Really just wear something comfortable.

Do you still offer the groupon for one month of classes for salsa?

No more Groupon. You can buy 7 group classes for $90.

Do you need to take a dance partner with?

    No partner needed.

The teacher had the kids sign a contract about commitment, teamwork etc (cool!) my daughter took it super seriously bc she's like that. The teacher himself then proceeded to come late or not show up at class at all (no notice or group txt would even come from dovetail after the fact- we just show up and it would empty the majority of times. After months of this they gave us a $100 credit and 1 email about it. They transitioned it to a new teacher who was really dependable. They told my daughter they "thought we would place in top 10, like 6 or Better." My daughter is type of person who latches onto that so when they didn't place, she felt it more Than needed. It was clear her time at park district (McFeteridge) brought out waaaaay more talent and she grew waaaay more there and with very strong routines. Great artistry from Dovetail tho. Teachers were nice. They txtd us during paid sessions they wanted to walk the kids to 7-11 instead of class time. The other families were nice and we vibed with them- not competitive etc. did pizza with them couple times over year. my wife took a class at dovetail for adults and loved it. My daughter had classes (not completion) that went well and she really loved all the teachers.

We met…read morewith Sam for our consultation and talked her through our experience level (limited), some constraints (my husband is deaf with cochlear implants), and our expectations for what we wanted to get out of the sessions. While Sam had her work cut out for her with us, she never let her cards show and was 100% patient and kind throughout ever lesson. We ended up purchasing 8 sessions leading up to the wedding and we HIGHLY recommend Chicago Dance and Sam, specifically! The options are endless: whether you want to just learn some different dance types and be able to use those lessons to freestyle or if you want 100% choreography... Chicago Dance is the way to go. A couple highlights. 1. Sam was energetic and excited to try all kinds of new steps / tricks and she made us willing participants. She also valued our feedback and ensured that we were confident in what we were doing. She incorporated more of the steps/moves we enjoyed and flexed if we were not comfortable with anything. We laughed a lot playing around with new successful and totally unsuccessful attempts at tricks. Given our experience level, I was so impressed with her ability to articulate feedback and say the right things to make anything "complicated" seem simple and feasible! 2. We started looking forward to our dance lessons. Considering this was still in the middle of COVID, aside from dinner dates, we had not really done much in the way of date nights. We ended up loving our lessons and looking forward to these "date nights" as we were having so much fun and felt like it was driving more connection. 3. We were torn about which song to dance to. For the first two lessons, we ended up learning waltz basics and started learning choreography to one song. We were practicing at home one day and decided to try with a different song, and fell in love. Sam quickly jumped into action helping us play with the different types of dance we can incorporate into the new song. She cut the music based on my suggestions seamlessly. No joke - she provided full service.

Class started with warm-up which got your blood flowing. Warmup included pushups so grab floor mat if not keen on doing them on hard wooden floor. Dance class was tough. Prior dance experience is needed. You don't have to be a professional but need to be able to pick-up choreography quick. Sometimes you will learn (2) 8 counts together and then move on very quickly. The style of dance seemed like Jazz, Theater and Pop. I liked it but I usually dance hip-hop, latin or African. It was a change of pace but Julia made it super fun. With this particular routine there was a plank portion, I skipped it because I just didn feel like it. Julia prepared me that the routine did include this in an 8 count. I just added some bodyrolls and called it a day. Most of the people in class seemed to be regulars. Everyone was friendly. After 44 mins of dancing, we finished with some toning that included an arm song. After putting light weights down, Julia stretched us to the max. THANK GOODNESS I would come back and groove some more. I honestly just wanted to delay working on a memo so thats why I signed up on Class Pass at last minute.

The layout is basically one big floor to dance on with ceiling lights and string lights to bright up the place. The class consisted of a lot of talented 40+ which was cool as they had a lot of knowledge to share. The size is great for group practices and socials. Parking - Pretty much just street parking. Customer Service - Awesome! My instructor was Dawn Lara and she was great! Knowledgeable and friendly. I felt pretty welcomed in this place. TL;DR OVERALL 4.5 Stars. I had a great experience here!
