Och Aye! it's a braw place, a must if your visiting Edinburgh and in my oppinion should be your first or last port of call to this fabulous city. I have walked, rambled and run up Arthur's Seat over the year's and it never fails to impress. My last visit was April last year, my friend and teenage daughter were up for a holiday from Wales. My friend had been told by her neighbour that she must do Arthur's Seat if coming to Edinburgh. We reached the top, the teenage daughter moaned but kept going, it was very windy as we sat and tried to eat our filled roll's, and on the way back down we took a route via the craggs that led us to Holyrood Palace and the bottom of the Royal Mile. We felt great and even the teenage daughter was glad that she had suffered it! i could go on about the virtues of visiting Arthur's Seat, talk about it's view's, historical and geological make-up, but i'm not going to because it mean's different things to different people. Arthur's Seat completes Edinburgh as the Scottish capital and microcosm. You can get a taste of Scottish culture in town, and why visit the Highlands when you've got the old lion on your doorstep? Alright, it's not exactly Ben Nevis, but the route to the top is as you'd fancy it - rugged and steep, or gentle and winding. You can pick, that's the beauty of it. The view from the top is amazing, and indeed the people on the hill are the friendliest you'll meet this far from Sighthill.. Queen's Drive is a decent climb on a bicycle, and it's not too long, so you could better your time round it plugging away all day. In Winter snow, the hill can even be dangerous - strong winds, bitter cold and unexpected cliffs make for an interesting voyage. And yet, the city is within such easy reach.. If you want to get away from it all, you don't need to go far. read more

Right in the heart of the city lies this imposing peak set in lovely grassy parklands where you will instantly feel a million miles away from city life. From the summit of this extinct volcano you can look down on Edinburgh and appreciate just how green the city is and why those of us that live here love it so much. Summer is of course a great time to ascend but don't be put off making the climb in more Scottish weather, it really is an easy climb and the mood of the mountain on a darker day is well worth experiencing. The summit will also be much less crowded out of peak season, giving you the time and space to contemplate the world from this very special place. Beautiful extinct volcano set in the centre of Edinburgh. AKA Queens Park 'cos it's owned by the Queen and is adjacent to Holyrood Palace, the Queen's Edinburgh crash pad. At the foot of the hill there's St Margaret's loch, a rather large pond inhabited by worryingly tame swans and geese. Good place to feed the ducks, but also a little bit intimidating If you drive up the hill you'll come to Dunsapie loch, another good place to feed the ducks and a nice jumping off point for an ascent to the peak of Arthurs Seat. The red coloured Salisbury Crags are another geological feature of Queens park and a very lovely place to watch the sun set, but perhaps not the best place to walk little ones as they sheer precipice will give you heart attacks! read more

Arthur seat is an extinct volcano in the centre of Edinburgh surrounded my Holyrood Park. This is a must see locationf ro anyone visiting Edinburgh and any one who lives here should be thoughroughly ashamed if they ahve not climbed it yet! The climb to the top is not difficult but for those less able you can drive half way up and look at the views from here or start your climb from here. The pond at the foot of the hill and the small castle ruins are a favourite with children who like to feed the ducks and swans and climb on the ruins. Salisbury Crags are also part of Arthur Seat and look spectacular but remember and be careful near the edges. This is a great place to visit and is absolutley free so get your walking boots on! read more

A truly magical place, Arthur's Seat is a stone's throw from the city centre and yet you could be a hundred miles away when you start the hike. Don't be put off by the site's popularity, as even on the busiest days there's enough sub-paths to wander through to ensure you have a bit of quiet solitude. There's a real magical vibe to the hike that you wouldn't expect so near to the city. I even came across an elderly Scotsman walking his half-dozen scotty dogs once when hiking there! Be sure to scope out the ruined buildings on it's northern slope, the craggy rock-face, and the bushy gardens around the back of it. It's worth the trip to Edinburgh for it alone. read more

A fantastic place to take a break from the city. Especially on a Sunday when the park is closed to traffic. Get some exercise, great for climbing, walking, running, cycling and kite flying or take it easy in the sunshine with a book or just admire the views. The kids will love the play park and two ponds to feed the ducks. Beware the swans - they think they rule the roads (they do!) and don't go too close as they will bite if they get scared. A free day out, unless the kids spot the ice-cream van! Take a picnic and relax the day away or grab some friends for a game of football or rounders. All we need is some sunshine to really enjoy it. read more

I love going to Arthur Seat for a walk or to feed the ducks and swans (although beware the swans as they snap at you sometimes). This is one of Edinburgh's seven hills that let off fireworks at New Year, the view from the top is spectacular. I used to go jogging up this hill, which I would never be able to do there days, but it was a really enjoyable jog and all the other joggers were really friendly. You can take the car quite far up if you are not the walking kind. When you are walking around Arthur Seat, or sitting on top of it, you almost forget you are in a busy city - even although you can see the busy city from all angles. read more

Although the obvious thing is to climb to the top of Arthur's Seat there is also another very appealing walk through the centre which really makes you feel as though you are very far from the city centre. If you are starting from the Commonwealth pool side walk up the road behind Arthur's Seat towards the crags ( Salisbury Crags ) There is a natural dip in the landscape between the crags and Arthur's Seat and if you go over it and down to your left you find yourself in a hidden valley. You can follow this down on several paths and will end up either by St Margaret's Loch or on the road leading back to Holyrood Palace. read more

If you live or are just visiting Edinburgh and the weather is good, go and climb Arthur's Seat. My wife decided a couple of Saturday's ago that I had always wanted to climb Arthur's Seat. I have lived in Edinburgh for over ten years and to be honest I didn't mind just looking at it from the bottom! Anyway we arrived at the parking area next to the duck pond and started our ascent to the top. The walk to the top actually didn't take much time at all, there are a number of different tracks taking you to the top which you can choose. I would thouroughly recommend a trip up here if you are visiting the city. Based right in the middle of a very busy city it is a great place to find a bit of peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle of all the city based tourist traps. If you fancy a challenge then make your way up from the main park or if you like taking your walking a bit easier go round the back to the loch and make your way up from there. Arthurs Seat has the perfect central location within the city ideal for viewing all of Edinburgh. The walkway round the hill is over 3miles long and very pleasant in good weather, but you have to be extra careful in bad weather, many's a person has slipped in windy/wet conditions. There is also St Margaret's Loch which kids just love as it is something of a swan-fest, take plenty of bread for these hungry birds! read more

Wind blown with icy fingers we clambered up to watch the winter sun set over the darkened stone city, shuffling on our feet to keep from freezing in place and we weren't alone. There is something compelling about this walk, a desire to conquer gets you to the top, and then the view takes away all your dreams of grandeur and reminds you of how small you a really are. read more

Never once will you get to the top of Arthurs seat and see a great view in one direction. The place is brilliant to have in the centre of a major city. Easily ascessible and located next to the parliament and also dynamic earth as well as meadowbank and the commonwealth pool in other directions.
