Living in a flat in Edinburgh means that when the sun comes out (a rarity) there is no garden to enjoy it in. Queue boyfriend with a car and problem sorted. We try and get up to the Pentland Hills as much as possible during the summer. I love going for a walk with a picnic to undo all the goodness of said walk while basking in the suns rays. The Pentlands are very popular with serious hill walkers too though, and mountain bikers. My boyfriend is a keen mountain biker and finds that sometimes the Pentland Hills can get too busy with hill walkers, so perhaps its not the best place for mountain bikers who really want to let rip. The Hills are also popular with horse riders and dog walkers, so it is important to remember the access code to avoid any disputes. Its great for a family day out or relaxing walk and there is plenty of wildlife and farm animals around to keep an eye out for. It is so nice and quiet up here, its hard to imagine the city is only a few minutes away. That is the fantastic thing about Scotland, you have amazing scenery like this on your doorstep.

Just outside of the city bypass you leave urban life behind and say hello to the rural Pentland Hills. This is a fabulous area to go for a walk as the scenery is fantastic and enhanced by the presence of cows, and sheep offering some picture perfect views. This does, however, raise a point as when you go through these farms do respect them for what they are and especially keep dogs on leads around the cows. Getting here can be a bit of a feat in itself let alone actually walking anywhere from here, but if you're up for a trek out of town its well worth the journey. Some of the views on offer here simply cannot be beaten so it's well worth a visit.

A hidden gem which your Julia Donaldson loving little ones will love to visit!…read moreWe call this Gruffalo Wood because of the Gruffalo-themed carvings dotted near the entrance of the Loch. The Loch itself is fairly small, taking only 15-20 mins to walk around. There is lots of nature and wildlife to explore here from toadstools to frogs to wild raspberries to dragonflies... We met a particularly large, and bold, swan today whilst feeding the ducks! On our last visit we stumbled across hundreds and hundreds of baby frogs migrating across the pathway to the Loch. This has become a regular location for us to visit with our little Julia Donaldson fan. There is a play park at the far end of the Loch from the little car park off Kilmardinny Avenue and if you need something to eat or liquid refreshments after your walk there is a recently opened Waitrose with a lovely cafe minutes away by car or foot!

We really enjoyed walking round the loch in the sunshine, the path is pretty easy going for littles and the pram alike, and there are a few places to stop along the way and see the ducks or discover the awesome carvings. We couldn't find the play park, perhaps a little sign would help, but we asked someone and soon found the little path leading up to it. There were some different play areas to explore including an awesome rope swing that the adults enjoyed too! We had a great, free day out and it worked well to tire out the kids. Would highly recommend.

It is surrounded by trees. If you look above the trees you'll see how modern architecture blends with the very old buildings. In the park is a playground for toddlers and a little older children. A short-game 36-hole golf course is here with a neat history listed on the signs. You walk on at no cost carrying a wedge and putter and practice/play as long as you want. We saw two girlfriends playing, and two businessmen in shirts and ties playing during their lunch hour. There is also a dog park. Take a walk here on the paved paths.

I mean yes, it nice and green, and it's cool having a space like this in the city, but in my view there are other awesome places like Inverleith Park, and the Botanic Gardens (obvious I'm from Stockbridge much?) that aren't such a hike to get to but have much better views. Also less people which I like. Walking through, this place is quite busy with people sitting with their lunch, drumming, playing with their children or walking through to get to their next destination. Overall a nice space that is easily accessible, and would probably be a favorite of mine if I lived on that side of town, but it's not so in blowing that I need to go out of my way to return.

There are a few different ways to make your way up to the top. For first timers, I would suggest taking the route near Holyrood Palace which, while not easy, is more gentle than the route near Pollock Halls. My first time up, I took the latter and ended up climbing up boulders - which felt a bit precarious. No matter which way you go up, bring lots of water and wear shoes with good traction. You will definitely feel like you accomplished something when you reach the top. And, as I mentioned, the views are spectacular! At the summit, I always make a point to touch both the white triangulation pillar and the bronze geographical indicator. On our most recent trip, it was April so the weather was perfect! The previous time, we hiked it in August when it was a little too warm and we were greeted by swarms of midges at the top!
