They make mistakes and then they ask you to carry the burden. I had ordered a couple of things from them in the past but one day they delivered two coats I hadn't ordered. I emailed them to ask what it was about and they realized they had shipped another order to me without even realizing it. Without offering a single word of apologies they just asked me to print out a return slip and drop off the package -- all at my expenses in terms of gas, print outs (we don't have a printer at home), and time. In other words, they were expecting me to do they own job without even saying thank you or that they were sorry for the inconvenience they caused me. I've been a customer for about a year and a half now. The team here is excellent. Very friendly, not pushy salesmen but instead informative, knowledgeable on their fabrics and cuts and fit. Come for the tequila, stay for the tailoring. As a recent college grad, I had been on the hunt for articles of clothing (pun, check) that met three criteria: comfort, practicality, and quality. I came across AoS while searching for tips. Luckily I found Dan's many sartorial posts. I was also intrigued by their core values: provide high quality American-made clothing. I followed AoS for a year before finally biting the bullet and walking in for measurements and consultation. As I took the elevator up to the third floor, I was a bit nervous. Never having had a full tailoring experience, I expected guys that would scoff at any of my comments and requests. (I have gone through the MTM experience such as Indochino, but I was not impressed. Let's also be honest, you can't compare it to AoS.) I was met by Will and Wes. "Do you like tequila?" Wes asks me. "Yeah sure." (Who doesn't like free tequila?) The actual measuring experience was a breeze and painless. I didn't feel any of the judging or scoffing that I expected. Just genuine interest and a desire to provide the best experience possible. My first AoS purchase was a Navy hopsack jacket. Fast forward a few weeks and I got my basted fitting. I dropped by the shop to try on and work out a few minor kinks, namely my enormous neck roll due to my impossibly square shoulders. I was a bit skeptical they could work out my neck roll, but they obviously assured me they would. (Damn were they right.) Let's fast forward a few more weeks: my jacket arrived. I walked into the store to be met with a brown hopsack jacket (and more tequila). Not what I expected, but when I asked Will about it, he realized they had made a mistake in the order. I still tried on the brown hopsack for a fitting. (An aside: I've always thought I looked terrible in brown.) When I put on the brown jacket my first words were "damn I look good...in brown." How was this possible? They just made me look like a million bucks in a color I had always disliked. That my friends is magic. The guys offered me the jacket at a rare discount and offered to remake it in blue. I was not about to let them take my new found love for brown away from me. I was so impressed that I asked for the navy hopsack to be paired with pants for a full blown suit. Let's count this as my second purchase. After some waiting, I got my full Navy hopsack suit. (Mind you, I also had a basted fitting for my pants. Hopefully you won't make the mistake of buying a jacket just because it's cheaper. Get the whole thing, please.) For the second time: "damn I look f#%*^ gooood". So now we have another problem: my extremely large calves. The pants got caught on my calves every time I sat down even after alterations. (Note: they leave up to 2" at the seams so you can lie to yourself that you won't gain weight.) Dan offered to remake the pants for me and even ship them halfway around the world, since I was planning on leaving NYC for an extended period of time. Now this is what you call customer service. So now let's recap: because the guys "messed up", I benefitted with a brown jacket that looks amazing and a full blown suit in navy. This is what I call the "best mistake ever." Now for my third purchase (still in the works), I plan on getting a coat so I can wear my good looking suits in the winter. Actually, for this purchase, I consulted on the piece of outerwear that would most complement my current wardrobe and lifestyle. The guys are always happy to chat with you about your needs; they're very down to Earth and easy to talk to. TLDR; AoS is a full service tailoring experience with top notch customer service. Where to start? Long time follower of these guys for fashion advice during the blog days, then I stopped following them for about a year or so. I was skeptical of the idea of an e-commerce company doing personal fitting without being in person (isn't that the whole point??). However, Articles of Style has it down! I've followed them since their days as TSB (the style blogger), and I love their content, so I decided to try it out once I finally needed a new suit for wedding season this year. I was pleasantly surprised by the ease of the process, as well as the final fit! To note, I've tried some other made-to-fit companies (e.g. Trumaker), and while they do measure you in person, what I've realized is that in that in Trumaker's case the folks are salespeople, NOT tailors. It actually led to a much worse product! The team at Articles of Style seemed to really care about the service they provided me, and is serious about creating a great product. Overall, if you're in the market for a new suit, and you are willing to be patient, this one won't disappoint! read more

Getting the suit from the Articles of Style was arguably, the smoothest custom-clothing experience I had online. The only other company that I have been equally satisfied with is Proper Cloth and they only do shirts, an admittedly easier piece to tailor than an overcoat or a three-piece suit. Fitting process, albeit not entirely clear to me at first, worked flawlessly. I filled my profile, described my style and off we went. Soon enough the try-on garment arrived: finished pants, finished vest and a basted (unfinished jacket). This was when the scepticism started to fade away. I am still wearing the trousers from this test garment to this very day - it's a nice charcoal grey pair of pants, as versatile a piece as it gets. Then I uploaded the photos, described the aspects that I wanted to adjust and within a month or so I got my suit. Later I learnt that the team actually looks individually at each photo you send, analyze your feedback and make bespoke adjustments to the final garment. A combination of collected big data on various body types and experience of AoS team can work miracles. When the final garment arrived this hopsack three-piece number quickly turned out to be my favourite suit, head and shoulders above any other garment that I've ever owned in terms of fit, fabric and craftsmanship quality. It did require some minor tailoring adjustments, which AoS compensated to me. And once these adjustments are recorded in my physical profile with Articles of Style, that is where the fun part starts - getting bespoke clothes as if you were simply shopping online. I confess, before I decided to commission a suit, questions haunted me. Would a particular piece be versatile enough to function as a staple item, would this fabric work with the other parts of my wardrobe, would it be possible to change lapel or cuff width to my liking (by the way, the answer to the latter question is "yes", although it is not mentioned specifically on the website). The AoS crew was there for me to patiently answer all these questions. Granted, getting the fit right on your first suit can take some time and extra visit or two to a local tailor. But once you do dial in your fit, your next great fitting-suits are just a click away. I do wish that AoS grows into the new Brooks Brothers :) Oh, one last thing. My husband and I live in Northern California and worked with these incredible artists to create a custom made suit for our wedding. Not only was everyone at Articles of Style accommodating and incredibly easy to work with, the product they created for us was beyond incredible. I found about about these guys after some of my friends started wearing their suits. I decided to get two and immediately was hooked. The unique fitting process was incredibly easy, and once your sizes are locked in, you can just order more and more. I now only wear their suits and tuxedos and cannot see myself using anything else. Great fit, great quality, and very easy. it took me a long time to decide to pull the trigger on my first purchase, but I'm very happy I did. If you're into the AOS aesthetic (I think summed up as: versatile, workhorse suits that can be worn as separates and dressed up or down), I definitely recommend it. The try-on process is of course the first point where you might be skeptical, but it works. You give them a couple details through their site (very little actually--height, weight, and how clothing usually fits or doesn't fit you), and they send try-on garments that already fit way better than you would expect (and that you can keep). Send them iPhone photos of how the try-on's fit, and several weeks later, you get the suit. There may be one add'l round of alterations, but then they have your measurements and you can order at will. Dan and team are eager and helpful over email to help you decide what you want, and go through any concerns. So if you're trying to figure out what combo of suits will work well together, or what kind of lapel is better for a particular fabric, they are happy to help, and are drawing on a lot of knowledge. The quality is great, and American-made. I have a Hollywood Flannel 3-pc, Forest Tweed 3-pc, and blackwatch plaid coat. The suits look every bit as great in person as in the photos. read more

I've had some good, middling and terrible experiences with tailors. My experience with Articles of Style was overall one of the best. I picked AoS because of the money back guarantee. I have had the disfortune of dealing with some dishonest tailors who promised to satisfy me but then disappeared when there were problems and refused to give me my money back. So for me this was an important safety net. I am quite demanding about my clothing and am well aware that the first version of a made-to-measure suit often has problems. The first suit they made for me didn't fit me that well. I took it to my tailor for adjustments and was still not terribly satisfied. I asked for a remake or my money back. With no hesitation they adjusted my measurements, ordered me a remake and promised that I could still get my money back if I didn't like the new suit. I must say that the remake was very well done. Overall I am satisfied and I found the service to be top-notch. They are committed to serving demanding customers and providing a quality product. They do not run away when there are complaints. Instead they take responsibility and move forward. The only downside is that for MtM the price-point is a bit on the high side. In my opinion, if you can get something from Indochino or Black Lapel that fits as well as AoS then maybe you should go the route of cheaper MtM. However, they are much more hit or miss than AoS, the service isn't as good and AoS has higher quality products. The other issue with AoS (actually this is made to measure in general) is that it can take a long time to get things right. The first suit took a month and a half to two months to make, but with all the back and forth, adjustments etc. it ended up being about 6 months before I got the final version. MtM takes a long time sometimes and I wish there was a way to streamline the process more. Overall, I recommend that you try Article of Style. Avoid the many charlatans out there who promise to satisfy you, but have no money back guarantee to back their promises of quality. read more

Working with Articles Of Style was the best custom-suiting experience I've ever had, online or offline. The online fitting process is simple, yet yields an impressive, highly personalized fit--especially with hard-to-fit areas (in my case, shoulders). This is a level of detail and precision that's impossible for the other online, algorithm-based suppliers to provide, in my experience. And in addition to the great fit, the guys' suggestions re: optional style details (e.g. lapel choices) and accessories were spot-on and really helpful. But best of all are the suits themselves. The fabrics are beautiful, the construction is impeccable; and the look and feel of the suits is vastly superior to anything off-the-rack (even more expensive "boutique designer" options....not even close). I'd previously been impatient with, or intimidated by, the bespoke suiting experience (and it's pricing)...but this is a whole new ballgame. I've been following AOS since it was The Style Blogger and have learned a ton. I ordered the Midnight Navy Topcoat and couldn't be more happy with it. As a tall, thin guy, it's difficult finding clothes that fit and I had tried off-the-rack then tailoring, I'd tried Indochino, SS, as well as other MTM and offline tailors in Vietnam and Beijing. I wish I had just saved my money and gone straight to AOS. The quality is unmatched and I'm thrilled with the service, to the extent that I just ordered a suit from them as my next order! Easily the best fitting suit I've ever owned. I've tried a few of the competitors - Black Lapel, Knot Standard, Indochino - and none of them hold a candle to AoS. The fitting process seems a little daunting at first, but it's actually much easier than measuring yourself, and at the end of the day it's what allows them to really nail the fit.
