I was looking for a place to have our monthly company event and chose Artillery because of the good reviews. It took some time to actually get a hold of someone to book a class. The teachers were very nice and everyone had a good time. My main issue was that it took two months to actually pick up the finished product. They said that they would reach out to us when it was done, but after a month of no word, I reached out and they said that they were doing the glazing and final firing and would get back to us with an exact date to pick up. Then no word from them again. I had to reach out again to confirm if it was ready. They said that they would add tissue paper to wrap the pieces, but when I got there, everything was just thrown into a box with no wrapping. When I mentioned it, they just put some bunched up crumpled newspapers on top and gave it to me. Good experience at the class, but the booking and pick up needs a lot of work. read more

The owner, Kelly, is super friendly and welcoming, and has done a great job showing us how to build simple clay figures. Cute, intimate place in the mission! My friends and I came here for a ceramics class late one week night (the pottery wheels are at the back). An instructor taught us how to use the pottery wheel and make a cylinder. We did it three times with breaks in between. The instructor was patient and friendly, and he made everything seem so easy! The whole experience was also super nice because of the dogs chillin here!! My friend told us we're allowed to bring our own wine to sip on, so I'll definitely be back with a bottle of wine next time! read more

I've taken rounds of classes at Artillery (2 beginner, 1 intermediate) and also have been a member for a year or two. It's a really amazing place and I'm so glad I landed here for pottery. The classes are small (4-6 people) so you get a lot of hands on attention. This also allows the instructors to constantly move back and forth between watching and helping the students and providing demos. I've gone to other studios with larger classes and the instructor might do all the demos at the beginning of class and for me, it's hard to remember. The studio focuses on environmental sustainability as well, which sets it apart from other studios. They have done a lot to connect to the Mission and be a part of the neighborhood. The other students and members are all friendly and if I'm ever stuck on something, there's usually someone around willing to think it through, give advice, etc. It is more than just a place to take lessons--it is a community. read more

Owner is heartless. My friends and I scheduled this class couple weeks in advance. This morning, we received news of an intense storm in the Bay Area so I called the owner multiple times to see if I can reschedule. My friends would be commuting from and back to East Bay & SJ late at night (~9PM) and I was worried that they might get into an accident. The owner returned my call 2 hours before class and said that we would need to pay $25/pp to reschedule. I asked him if he saw the news and his response was "sorry, store policy." Really? You're the owner. You can make an exception. Sure, $25 doesn't seem much to some people but the way it came across to me just seemed like he was more concerned about his money and business than my friends' safety. Walking from my home on Capp Street to Walgreens on 23rd, I pass the usual array of Mission Street shops. You've got your luggage dealers, mobile phone cover/ charger stands, produce stands, taco joints, and, wait... what's this... a hipster boutique?! Here at 24th and Mission? You bettcha. Artillery is a gallery/ boutique, selling local artwork (love the 3-D sketches + glasses!), sweet Adidas gear, and locally made hipster apparel. "Those are handmade by hand!" explained the over-eager sales associate while I sifted through their hand-painted (by hand) tshirts. She hovered over me the entire time I was in there, which was slightly annoying but understandable. This place needs to thrive and she needs to sell some goods. Foot traffic is high on this street but this store isn't "tipico." Their clientele have yet to discover Artillery. You can get a sweet 'stang, kitty cat, or your fixi painted on a shirt here. They have some accessories and shoes too. I have my eye on a Rastafarian-inspired sweater. This little spot is just what this corner of the Mission needed. Be sure to sign-up for their emails. Interesting jewelry and art selection - my sister tried on a bunch of Via Rosalia jewelry, including a claw bracelet. She wound up going with a bone bracelet. The staff are super nice and great at helping pick through the jewelry, offering to clean it and providing excellent background information about the artists. You walk into Artillery and you immediately are engulfed with such a feel good vibe and are surrounded by the finest of local art, crafts, jewelry, clothing, and so much more. Being born and raised in SF it's at times hard to go back to the Mission and witness just how gentrified its gotten over the past decade. After all, us native San Franciscans are a rare bunch nowadays. Yes, I do admit that we are the kind to jump at any chance to throw the fact out there and make it known. And yes, I understand how snobby that in itself can be. But when you're born at SF General Hospital it just doesn't get more SF than that. And yes, that is a fact that you NEED to know about me lol. Anyways, we can all agree that hipsters, SF transplants, and techies have helped upgrade the Mission and Valencia into a hot spot for the young mid twenties to mid thirties crowd. And yes, the Mission is now home to some of the best restaurants in town now-- however, you never want to see the Mission to lose its MIssion-ness. If you were lucky enough to have been around in the eighties and nineties you know exactly what i'm talking about (aka if you've ever heard stories or have been a part of the shenanigans that occurred at El Oso bar, you're legit). If not, go to Artillery and you'll get a small sense of the kind of place the Mission was pre-tech sec boom. It's the kind of place that gives you hope that the Mission will always retain its flavor. My best friend recently moved to SF. I told him whenever he finds a great space he is obligated to take me. So, when he invited me to Artillery's open house on a Thursday night I more than jumped at the chance. It was a scene of people I was new to, but everyone was welcoming. The shop is run by a beautiful Latina women, with Latin@ workers, featuring clothes, art, accessories, etc made by Latin@'s. I was hit by cupid's arrow the minute I set foot inside. As I walked around, I noticed their wide variety of goods. Their big brand shoes were adjacent to a case of jewelry made by local designers. There was a Tom's shoe display as well as hanging pieces by community artists. It is the perfect blend of culture and needed commercialism. Much like the Mission as a whole. That is why this store makes so much sense. It is culture, refined. It is art at it's purest form. But don't get it twisted, it is also a business. One I am more than happy to support. Why? Because it doesn't loose it's identity in the process, it creates it own. It allows those shopping to do so as well. For example, there are one of a kind shirts made by a local artist. If you don't find one in your size, or in your favorite t-shirt color, they will customize it for you. Nestled perfectly a few doors down from mission staple El Farolito, this place is bound to become legendary in it's own right. Maybe even the future Rivera or Salarrue is already hanging on it's walls. read more

Everything Regina says is true (I even live on Capp too!) but no words are quite good enough for this place. As a wanna-be hipster, I get quite intimidated by those I wish to imitate. No need here! The salespeople are so nice! After going back a few times, I finally made the decision to commission my own custom t-shirt. Not that the shirts already in there aren't totally awesome but that my top half will not fit into the mostly "Small" size selection (just as my bottom half does not fit into the skinny jeans I SO wish I could squeeze into!) I give it 4 stars for location, selection, and service alone. For now, the parrot outside is worth the extra star. When I pick up my shirt next week, I'll update further UPDATE: Picked up my awesome shirt! Took 4 days total--including the weekend. They special ordered my shirt size, got it in, and did the art. Artillery Gallery is a sweet little space fulled to the brim with beautiful Latin culture from the surrounding neighborhoods. I especially love the local art prints they had strung across their main walls, adding to the already inviting color palette of toys and one-of-a-kind wares littered throughout the store. Unfortunately, there's very little to no organization throughout the store. It's really chaotic, much like many other stores in the area. At a glance, you might even assume they are one of those tourist shops full of San Francisco paraphernalia (though they do have that too). That said, I'd definitely drop by here again if I'm in the area to see what new local artist they have up in their main gallery. I just hope they do a bit of house cleaning to keep it from looking like any other store on the block. read more

I wandered into this store about a year & a half ago and have been a regular since. The staff are very friendly and helpful, always offering to check the back for sizes and even to contact the designers to get other sizes, pieces [of jewelry], or custom items. They have a great variety of products, and are always getting in new things. About once a month they have art receptions with various artists work, music, food trucks, and the registers are open to shop. Definitely worth a stop if you are in the Mission!!! read more

Two of my friends and I signed up for the pottery intro class, thinking we were getting into a really great program that would leave us knowing more about pottery and techniques. I should have known something was sketchy when I was directed to send payment through Venmo to an individual and not The Artillery. (This by the way, is illegal) They said it would be 4 sessions, 3 hours long each. The first session was odd because the instructor didn't really give us any guidance, but kept telling us to feel the clay and do what feels right with us, play around. We were to play with the clay and get comfortable with it. That's fine, but when you don't give us any idea of where to place our hands, how much we have to wedge the clay, or any tips on pulling the clay out to form some kind of shape, it really isn't helpful at all. I was expecting someone to tell me, YES you're doing that right or NO you should try this. Instead, we kept getting "Try your best, it doesn't have to be perfect. Just feel the clay." I left the first class thinking pottery isn't for me because I couldn't get any real shape from the clay in the entire 3 hours. The 2nd session was better, but we didn't go the full 3 hours because apparently you need 30 minutes to clean up your station.. We were all finally able to get good forms going, but found it odd that we had someone included in our group who wasn't there the first time. This new student was on her 1st class out of the 4 sessions, while we were on the 2nd. I don't understand why you would have a class and have people at different levels be in it. Also, when we walked in, we had expected them to know what class we were coming in for, but they didn't. Seemed very unorganized. The 3rd session took place on the biggest storm in the Bay Area in 12 years. Bart was closed and my office told everyone to go home early around noon. All morning and day we tried calling the studio and contacting them, but nothing. 2 hours before the class time, they got back to us and said that we'd need to pay $25 per person to reschedule. That would be fine if they actually told us this in advance when we paid for the sessions. There was no contract we had to sign, no "rules" of the shop they disclosed so when they told us this, naturally anyone would get upset or confused at the least. It's not like we did not want to go, we all could not physically get there because public transit was closed and frankly, it was dangerous to be out on the road. I wasn't going to risk my life to make it to this pottery class. We told them that we'd be flexible and can come in any other day, but due to the storm and lack of public transportation, there was really no way for us to make it. The owner did not want to understand and all he cared about was his $25 per person to reschedule. Finally, the only way we could get the pottery items we made was to pay this man $25. This was for a class we had all already paid in advance for. He couldn't be empathetic to our situation and understand that we really had no choice. If you're going to charge people a ridiculous fee to reschedule, you need to be upfront about it. If you really care about your business's reputation and customer loyalty, you would do something to make it right or appease us. I know a lot of people who are interested in taking classes and I will highly discourage them from coming here. It's really not worth your time and money and at the end of everything, they never even fired up our items so we don't have anything to show for this class. read more

I was in San francisco for one day and really only had a few hours before I need to be at the airport I yelped for a place to kill some time. When I stubbled on the artillery apparel & gallery, I thought perfect maybe I'll find something not so cleshay to take back with me. This gallery was amazing there was so much to look at i must have circled that shop a million times and every time I found a new treasure! The staff was incredibly noligable and fun, then even went as far as giving me directions on where to go for dinner. I was on the hunt for a T-shirt from Bay Area artist Nopal. I found it online from another place and purchased it, but have not heard any word about it. I shed a tear or two. On a recent visit to the Bay Area, I walked the streets of The Mission Dist. If you know me, I love to walk neighborhoods to explore and discover. I was mainly looking for food, but purely by chance, I happened upon a boutique fashion store in what seemed like a seedy part of Mission. I don't know what caught my eye, but it looked inviting. Turns out this joint specializes in creative & one of a kind pieces of art: the kind you can wear. If you love art, and organizations which promote them this place will be THE BOMB for you! (It was for me within seconds). They sell all kinds of clothing with hand-painted art on them. There wasn't a huge selection, but it's the quality which shines. I was checkin' out the Men's shirts, and generating a list of items of interest..... . . . and then, . . . Sade was looking at me (in a gold heavenly glow). I opened the clothes rack and it shined back at me like the box Vincent Vega (aka John Travolta) opens up in Pulp Fiction. I found THE shirt!! I quickly snatched the shirt and held it close to my chest, scanning the store left and right making sure no one else eyed my discovery. Now the shirt was totally teeny tiny...I didn't care, I would have wore the hell out it with my belly hanging out. Around this time a guy who worked here came by and asked to help (Maybe he thought I was a questionable character, and wanted to make sure I wasn't going to cause a scene...or steal something). At any rate, he was SUPER nice, and he was able to find me not only the shirt in my size, but he gave me a rundown of the store & their Mission Statement. I was sold. The T-shirt was sold. And I will surely be back here again, whenever I'm in the BAY AREA! Oh one more thing, I was also told that Artillery has exclusive access to Nopal Apparel as well-- a good thing! read more
