Great appreciation goes out to Artist &Supply for a wonderful variety of sketch books, oil, water colors, paints, canvas, gilding with gold leaf, oil pastels or cray-pas, arches paper, brushes and so much more that I am not able to readily get in my area in Waukesha Wisconsin. Cool place down in the basement with a very nice and large selection of all types of art supplies. Was a little bit difficult to find because their sign isn't very visible and the double doors to the place are kinda tucked in. You walk in and it's downstairs in the basement of the whole building. So it's a pretty large space. I wish they had a bigger selection of coloring books but I guess it's more a place for actual artists and not so much amateurs that want to practice staying in the lines. read more

great place for a quick stop in to grab something or wander the aisles, i normally just pop in to grab a skein or two of embroidery floss when needed and though the collection is not the biggest they have some great colors and i've been able to color match almost exactly. last time i went the cashier did mention that "everything is pretty pocketable" there... idk if they were insinuating that i was stealing but i really only needed one skein! i thought that was funny though read more

Let me say first, I like to support local stores and am definitely used to them doing small markups from big brand stores. I have no problem with the usual 10-25% or so that happens. However, I got some colored pencils today and later at another store saw them for WAY less. I paid $35 for a $20 set, an over 70% markup. The $6 pencils I got were $3, so a 100% markup. A quick google showed that everywhere else priced them around the cheaper price too (regular, not on sale). The coloring book and sharpeners I got were priced totally fine (normal ~10% markup) but I'm still appalled to be gouged so much on the pencils. If I'd gotten a receipt, I'd be returning them for sure (my bad). Definitely check prices before you buy! Edit - After reading their response, I'm now offended that they'd suggest an "alternative product to fit your needs" as though I'm cheap. Bad customer service suggestion, especially when you can't do anything for me anyway without giving me a receipt! read more

I love this craft store. They're close to campus and give students 10% off with an ID. They also have a REALLY good variety of supplies, and the prices are fair. The staff are knowledgable and helpful. They display art from locals, and it's a nice, bright welcoming when you walk into the store and down the stairs into their main store area. Make sure to keep posted on their sales, especially the back to school sales. read more

I like this place. They have a TON of great supplies and the prices are pretty decent. It's in a basement location, but it's not dark or damp or anything "basement" like. The aisles are well organized and the supplies are all grouped together nicely too. They don't have a a huge selection of alcohol inks on hand, but it's not surprising - nowhere ever does. I was surprised, however, when I couldn't find Yupo paper anywhere in the store. They sell it on their website, and in the store they have literally EVERY SINGLE other type of paper you could imagine. Great sales on canvases and wood surfaces though, so I will continue to shop here for that. read more

They have a huge selection of supplies for the craft geek to have a real field day. Most recently I went in for painting supplies and was bowled over by their extensive selection of acrylics. Located on Gorham, right by AJ bombers and Pelmeni's is this awesome place to get your supplies. There's an adorable sign above street level, you head down the stairs and lo and behold you find this amazing treasure trove for craft geeks. I've found threads, felt material, tweezers, jewellery start up kits.. There's even pranks and funny gifts you can get for your friends or toys for your kids! Love it. Only thing missing is fabric, like yards of fabric for making clothes of my own. But you can find that in other stores out by the malls. Just a tip, show your student ID for 10% off! Great Staff, knowledgable and friendly. i was assigned to select art to update an aging condo building, and sought advice at the store regarding size, scale, placement, etc. of art I had selected. Jason was incredibly helpful with creative ideas about placement, and even came out on his own time to help place and mount the art that I had selected. Over and beyond! Great Art Supply Store in Madison. Went there this last Saturday, and did my usual art supply binge shopping. The kicker was, they actually had packaged stacks of 6 wood panel canvas's! That's hard to find, at at, I think it was $15, for 6 6x6 wood panels, is a STEAL! Great variety of drawing paper, colored pencils, all the brands of paint you could think of. Love the atmosphere. I'd recommend this place as a go to, if you are into doing encaustic. I've never seen so many readily available supplies for this art medium all in one place. A Madisonian gem if I must say so myself. read more

As a nomadic aspiring professional artist I've been to many art supply stores around the country, and this is by far my favorite. The selection of supplies is great but it's really the employees that make it worth the trip, they are all approachable, easy going and helpful. Jason gave me lots of great advice on gilding techniques, lettering, and art restoration, and pointed me to several resources for advancing my skills and expanding my network of artist peers/mentors. His advice helped so much I was able to secure several more high end gilded lettering jobs. Thanks Jason! It's perfectly convenient to buy supplies at the MATC book-store but I prefer to get my supplies directly from A&C Supply. The staff is friendly and between the group of them someone will be able to steer you in the right direction if you need assistance or help with a decision, plus if they don't have what you are looking for they'll order it. It's all pretty standard retail pricing and though you can probably find them cheaper online you'd end up losing out on S&H. Even though I admit to taking advantage of the occasional sale from Michaels I take pride in shopping locally at A&C. read more

I'm not a serious artist, just someone who dabbles in ink/colored pencil/watercolor pencil drawing. But this store is great. The prices are good enough that it's actually a better deal there, than to order the same products online (I'm talking mainly about their pens/pencils/erasers, etc.). That's a pretty rare thing these days. And as the others have said, the staff are great. They're just real, down to earth people who do their best to be helpful, and coincidentally they really know their stuff. The store space itself is pretty cool, if a bit cramped - an old metal spiral staircase leads to a basement level where most of their paper/canvases are kept. It's an enjoyable place all-around. If you need serious art supplies, there's no reason to go anywhere else in Madison. read more

This place seems to have it all. Located in the basement of the building, but so colorful and bright with ideas. I wasn't wandering the store for too long before an employee saw me and asked if I needed some help finding anything in particular. I needed to get some transparencies for screenprinting t-shirts. He was quick to point out a couple of options and asked if I needed any additional supplies for that project or anything else that I may be working on. I didn't have any other items on my list, so he left me to browse the shelves. Each aisle presented lots and lots of stuff to look at. This is a great place for you to let your creativity loose. They do have the aisles marked nicely and the supplies are organized very nicely too. They have quite a few unique gift ideas. This would a great place to shop for some fun stocking stuffers.Even if you are not a crafty type of person, you will probably find something here that you want or need. The prices were pretty reasonable and they give a discount to students and teachers. Gotta love that! read more

I bought an art kit from there for a class, and I went back two days later to return the kit (completely untouched) with the receipt in hand because I no longer needed the kit. They refused to allow me to return the brand new kit even though it was untouched, and the manager was rude and did nothing about it. Horrible customer service, and extremely condescending employees. I would much rather pay more to buy supplies elsewhere. read more
