I have an original signed etching that was given to me as a gift many years ago. It is large --…read moreprobably about 24 by 36 inches. Over the years, the etching was coming loose from the matting, it was slightly wrinkled and the frame became worn. I wanted to have it rematted and possibly get a new frame.The owner of South Shore Gallery talked to my husband and me for probably half an hour, seeming excited about working on the piece, looking it over and also suggesting things she thought we could do. She told us she'd have it completed in about 10 days and she would call us. We left confident that we had come to the right place. We paid half down, as requested. To make a long and frustrating story short, after about two weeks, I called to inquire about it and it was not done; she said she'd hurry and get it done. When it was ready, I was shocked that she could call it ready -- the color of the mat was nothing like our original choice. Worse, the mat partially covered the artist's signature and the name of the piece. And, you can see it is not flat in the frame; it has ripples. Further, a label that originally was on the back, which she said she would save for us, was not there. Just wanted to warn others to be careful if you have items that are valuable to you.

The owner, Mary, is a hoot. She bought the place from a washer/dryer and refrigerator shop (which explains the Maytag sign on the building). Some of the left over equipment (stove, etc) is used for storage now. She still takes service calls for the Maytag people! There is a lot of decor-type items for sale. Good place to go for a mother's day gift if your mom is interested in decor or gardening. The goblet painting class was fun. It was just my mom and me and another woman. We painted wine glasses. Mary provided complete start up instruction on the paints and lots of tips, but let our creatively rule the design. It was fun. I would suggest this place for a party (wedding shower? adult birthday party?). Mary also has other painting classes, and ring crafts, and mosaic mirror classes.

While the location might not scream traditional ART GALLERY, it's location provides easy access, ample and convenient parking and a good coffee shop next door. The gallery itself is nice, bright and open, with plenty of room for mingling and wandering between pieces. Everything is clean and new. There are comfortable benches to stop and sit and contemplate the art works. There is also a small retail area along the side with small works of art for sale, like cards and journals. Nadia, the owner, is friendly and welcoming. I look forward to seeing more shows in this space.
