Mark Nolan set up a Roth Solo 401k for me and did a good job up front. They charge an annual fee to file for you each year. The first 3 years I was way under the minimum in my 401k and didn't need to have anything filed, so I didn't pay the annual fee to have them file. Since then I realized I did need their help badly to straighten some things out. I sent an email explaining why I didn't pay the annual fee and said I would be happy to pay for the years where they did nothing to bring my account current and would be a loyal customer. Mark's response: "Thank you, but once we resign from an account we don't take the client back." As a business owner who cares for my customers, I can't fathom treating someone like that. I guess I'm glad to have seen Mark Nolan's true colors before I paid him anymore money.

The more I watched their videos, the more I became informed of answers to questions I did not know I had. What really drew me in to watch more of their videos, was their holistic approach to retirement, which was an option I was never aware of. And combine that with their ability to explain complicated strategies using their software with real case studies was a bonus. Anyways, back to the review... I reached out to Ari directly via email, and to my surprise, he responded directly to me (I was expecting a form letter). He personally answered the general questions I had and we scheduled a meeting to determine if they can bring value, to justify their fee structure. Unfortunately, when he reviewed my current portfolio structure/allocation in detail, he was honest and said they could not bring value to justify their fees. He then proceeded to offer some guidance to other advisors they recommend, and further explained how specific advisor strategies would be better attuned to my needs in the near term. I really appreciated his candor... But what really stands out is his willingness and continues to help as much as he can, of course without providing specific investment guidance. Up until now, even though I'm not a client, he continues to take the time to respond and answer questions I have from time to time. And not just basic answers, but simplified, detailed video explanations for a better/easier understanding. I can go on with this review, but after a while, it might sound too good to be true. In the mean time the funds are not being productive for me and since Schwabb is doing this to many others how much are they increasing their own profits by collecting interest on the funds? Throughout the process, communication was poor despite multiple follow-ups. I received a generic email on April 10 stating that returns might not be completed on time. It wasn't until after I raised my concerns that I was told I had submitted my documents too late to receive the expected turnaround and they had done me a favor by taking on my tax return. Had that been disclosed during my initial consultation, I would have hired another CPA. After I later received an IRS notice regarding my tax payment, I reached out for assistance and received no response, leaving me to resolve the issue on my own. While the firm ultimately reimbursed the penalties and interest, they refused to acknowledge the broader service issues or take responsibility for the overall client experience. Unfortunately, based on my experience, I cannot recommend this firm.
