We're visiting my daughter who lives in Buffalo. One of my daughters suggested, on a rainy day, we…read morego and see what it's about. I was a little apprehensive, but went to spend time with the family. Okay, I admit it, it was fun. My wife and one daughter selected cups to paint. Another daughter selected a plate. I chose a chip/dip platter. So many options to chose, from seasonal holiday ceramics to coin banks. The owner (?) went over the process in detail. She helped us whenever we had questions. She was great throughout. We can't wait to see the final product. Not saying I'd do this again, but I wouldn't be opposed. This was a fun family outing (although I was separated from them as I had a splatter painting). I'm sure it'd be fun with a group or kids party. All the photos are pre-firing in the kiln.

The K Art Gallery just opened to the public, and is a "Native American owned commercial art gallery…read morewith a primary and robust focus on national-level Native contemporary artists." It's the first of its kind in the U.S. The art gallery spans over two floors, and is also used as a shared workspace. For the shared workspaces, there is table seating (with dividers), offices, and a video conference room. It would feel great to work in a space like this surrounded by art, I would feel very creative and inspired! I came with a friend to see the current exhibit titled "More than a Trace". Currently, you need to book a reservation online prior to visiting, and sign a covid waiver upon entry. There is no admission charge. Although I checked out some of the art in the exhibition on their website prior to visiting, I really enjoyed seeing it up close and having the chance to reflect on each piece. Although this is contemporary art, there were a few pieces that had strong historical ties, including the Treaty of the Seneca, and Antipode (Study in Dusty Rose). Overall I would highly recommend visiting this gallery if you enjoy art, and the opportunity to see work by contemporary Native American artists. Also, I'd like to give a special thank you to Sophia, who was incredibly friendly and made us feel welcomed!

What a neat place! They offer tours of the space on Saturdays at 11am - no reservations needed,…read morejust show up at 11. Ring the buzzer and they will come let you in (be patient, sometimes they may need to walk to the door from the other side of the building). The staff is friendly and helpful, and happy to answer questions. There is a wood shop, a metal shop, a fabric area, a Cricut machine, embroidery machine, 3D printer, laser cutters, and all kinds of other interesting tools to make stuff. They offer classes, and let people use the tools after taking safety classes if you show up during open shop hours when the supervisor of the space is there. They rent out small spaces as incubators and offer classes and guidance for growing businesses. If you have ideas of a thing you want to make, chances are there is somebody here who can teach you how to make it. The organization is very much based around community and sharing knowledge. If you are at all curious, I highly recommend the tour.

So far I've had the opportunity to make a shot glass, make some jewelry and learn the history of glass beads and play with 3D printing. As I mentioned previously the Foundry the incubator for a variety of business that make their home here. I recently attended the holiday market where a number of the vendors that make the Foundry home were open and many visiting crafters. Many if not all of these vendors host a class or two that for a reasonable price you can get hands on to learn a new skill. So far I've taken 3 and I can tell you these classes are small, intimate and really give you a hands on experience that really makes the class worth it. Some of these resident creators include a company that makes pucks and baseballs into bottle openers, a metal worker, glass blower, jewelry maker, a wooden frame bicycle maker and a man that makes bird feeders that resemble Frank Lloyd Wright windows. Most of them have etsy or other stores to browse what is available for purchase. For me, The Foundry is about creation, creativity and the access to be able to taken part in it. To work with skilled craftsmen, hear their stories, get tips while making something in the process. So check out a class or 10, it's worth it!

They often involve a DJ/ live band, dancing and it's basically like an awesome house party where there is also art. There are also lots of little trinkets / art you can purchase here. I bought a framed "BUFFALO" photographer that spells BUFFALO out of different cropped landmarks (such as the Richardson-Olmsted Complex, etc). The art was by Brian of FacesofBuffalo -- really cool stuff. Lots of other local art that you can buy as gifts / decor from your house. They also offer studio space for artists for rent. Cool spot!

I kept hearing their name…read more It seemed that everywhere I went 464 Gallery was mentioned, had a place card, or someone was talking about it. My first "exposure" to it was actually at another opening at the Burchfield, I mentioned that I had been to a show in NYC and the conversation quickly turned to "Have you seen what's up now at 464?" I had not, was not even sure where to find 464 Gallery. I heard about the owner, Marcus, during that conversation. That he was focused on providing a space for shows, but also a space for artists to work, 464 Studio. Sadly, I did not go and seek out 464 then. I should have. I read about them next in ARTVoice one week, and thought again I have to go to this place. Then I saw the address and realized it was located on Amherst, just near Wegmans & Lucys, both places I frequent. Then I went to City of Light and talked to an artist who has an upcoming show at 464. And saw that they were major influences at the Silo City event as well. Then they were at Elmwood Art Festival. And I saw the sign for the new spot called Glow on Allen, which opens in a few weeks. Off I went, finally. Found parking, easily, on the street. It's a nice space on Amherst, 2 rooms, lots of different artists work for sale when I went. Some I liked, some not as much, but all local and all interesting in some way. Marcus happened to be there and so we chatted for some time. He opened a few years ago in Blackrock. He said that he does a lot of "events" and the like, which is where a lot of his business comes from, not to mention that fact that his Gallery is on everyone's tongue. Like me he has noticed how much Blackrock is picking up, even in the past year, and hes thrilled by that of course. He lives in the area as well. Galleries can be very hit or miss. You like the show or you don't. Its really that simple. Hes done it a little differently, his gallery does shows, does events, and sells pieces from locals. He does a little of everything. I'm looking forward to going to Glow in a few weeks for an event there as well. I go to a lot of Galleries, large and small, wherever I happen to find myself. I have always enjoyed them. This is one that is committed to the city, the craft, the artists and the community. Its really a "whole package" kind of place, and that's really nice. Marcus is himself a photographer, but he does show other artists' photography in his space. He is an incubator of talent in many ways. He promotes himself of course, but he promotes others as well. Overall this is a Gallery to watch, and I'm sure Glow (on Allen) will be as well.

10 years! That's how long Artsphere has been here on Amherst Street in Black Rock. Impressive…read more Across the street (more or less) from 464 Gallery, Artsphere is also a gallery. It has a different feel to it, for starters, its been here longer. And it has a hairdressers place inside as well. Yep, you read that right. Mother runs the gallery, daughter runs the hair salon. When you enter the place the gallery is "all around you", there are great cards, paintings, photographs, pottery and more. The artists are from the Western NY area, so there are strong ties to the community. Its a nice selection and you are likely to find a gift if that's what you need. Walking toward the rear of the space, you see the salon, has a number of chairs and looks like it can accommodate a number of patrons. There's also a nice selection of local history and art books from independent authors in the community. Housed in the same building (and intertwined with) a nice salon, this may be the only place in Buffalo you can get your hair done AND shop for art gifts! The mother (gallery) and daughter (salon) team who run the show here have created a very welcoming and appealing space.
