We called the owner, Karla, and left a voice message. Later that afternoon, she graciously returned the call and let us know to come by on Friday to see the gallery, opening of a new show, and tour the sculpture park. So thrilled we were spending a second night on Camano Island to be able to meet Karla and enjoy her vision of this art Mecca. There aren't words to explain the magnitude of this Camano Island jewel. The gallery and park feature dozens of regional artists, including Karla. Seven times a year, she hangs a new show in the gallery - we happened to arrive on the day the latest show was opening which included an evening reception. Tours and receptions are free and, so, you can't put a price on the value of this experience. Of course, all of the art - inside and outside - is for sale. I did purchase some cards from a large selection of regional artists. Karla was kind enough to spend some time with us and provide some background on this (second) gallery she owns on the island. The weather was cool and cloudy the day we visited. Just nice enough to spend nearly two hours wondering the grounds. Three other women arrived while were there - two from Seattle and one from Napa - they had come to pick-up some paintings they had purchased. Wish we could have attended that evening's reception, but there was still so much to explore on Camano Island. Hopefully, we'll get there again.

This is an established gallery in a new, and much nicer location. There should be plenty of of…read morefoot traffic. The gallery is in a 1890's era building of old bricks and exposed ductwork. The gallery has two rooms. The day we visited, the well lit front had a display of art made from re-cycled/re-purposed materials. Very creative. It was with many artists mostly from the Olympic Peninsula area. The back gallery was a more the diverse collection of different media. All the artists are top shelf and not amateurish. My only complaint (selfishly so) is the lack of art photography (not the klitchy street festival kind). One or two pieces would be nice.

I walked into Gallery 9 today and was set on buying some jewelry. The woman working there was on…read morethe phone, having a loud talk about the POS and training and speaking rather unkindly about an absent coworker. When I let her know that I had planned on buying jewelry, she informed me that I should have interrupted her phone call. I told her I didn't think I should have had to do that. "I'm doing BUSINESS!" Was her reply, and then, "BYEEEE!" She alienated a local who wanted to purchase local art. I won't be walking through the doors of Gallery 9 again. Sadly this is how local artists are being represented on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in PT.

Nominally priced, handmade and one of a kind...like all of the art in this very fine waterfront cooperative. I try to go by the gallery three or four times a year. My visits are as much about chatting with the artists as they are about looking at (or purchasing) art. Each artist is in charge of the gallery for two days a month. So...let me tell you a bit about what I know. The PT Gallery is not voted number one gallery in town. That distinction would go to Gallery 9 which is at the other end of Water Street. But the Port Townsend Gallery *should* win an award for having the most varied art available for purchase...probably in all of Port Townsend. On this visit, I found some unique lifesized "people" made out of various types of cloth. Absolutely amazingly beautiful. Spoke with the "cashier" of the day, who makes wonderful silver chain jewelery. And is also the coordinator for the local food bank. Checked out various paintings. Had I extra cash, I would have bought several...although I'm gonna need to put up some more walls in my house if I keep coveting paintings! The "garden" was open despite the mildly bracing weather, so I went outside outside to have a look at new treasures there. And, tah-duhh...there was the stone carved vase I'd been looking for forever. Only, I didn't even know such a thing existed until the moment it caught my eye. Its now in my stairwell as I have mentioned. Enjoy the Gallery. Enjoy its artist-participants. And if you really want to experience the place, plan to pass through on an Art Walk evening. The first Saturday of the month...refreshments served at the Gallery on Art Walk evenings aren't shabby either.
