We had a lovely Saturday evening meal here -- bacalhau served in multiple ways really stood out to us as exemplifying Portuguese cuisine. Everything else was tasty -- but the vegetable soup was out-of-this world delicious. I'd certainly love the recipe to that one! The presentation on all dishes was stellar and servers were very pleasant. We went with friends and it was quiet despite it being full. Lastly, everyone spoke multiple languages -- fluently!!! What an incredible meal- the fish soup, filet and sle baked in spinach and pastry - all were incredible. Nice ambiance and great service.

We arrived in Portugal today and wanted a spot with fish....most spots are, so the Concierge made several recommendations. On the basis of that and the super reviews at Yelp we came here. Nice welcome from the staff. The place has a nice feel to it and the design is old style Portugal and was filled at 10pm on a Saturday. There was no hurry and we were served and helped by several staff both for the wine and the menu We started with the breads and spreads which included several types of bread, tuna mousse, garlic butter cheese and olives. Each was delicious and the cheese was half a block served with a spoon. We had the octopus tartare which was a tower of thinly sliced Octopus with a delightful tangy sauce (olive oil, light mayo, and something citrusy). Entrees were the tiger prawns and cod cooked their way. The 3 tiger prawns were colossal but the consistency was firm and not tough. Grilled quickly on high heat and served with mango slices which were more on the sweet side. A nice combo - there was also some thicker balsamic sauce under the prawns which also helped draw out the taste of the prawns. The cod was grilled and served on 3 small potatoes skin on which were cooked and then lightly crushed. The fish was salty as required but not dry. The center was moist and the crunch edges were a nice combo. A tower of shredded broccoli was in the side and the dish and the entire plate was served in an olive oil bed. Delightful. We had low to medium expectations but we were impressed. Will be back. PS. We were also served a little port at the end. It was a nice way to end a solid Meal and was not as sweet. read more

We went to as salgadeiras in our first night in Lisboa. Its a former bakery kinda trattoria atmosphere, with amazing service and food. As apetizer we had a octupus tartare (that was more like a carpacio yet delicious) then we share (its enough to share) the Bacalhau "Bairro Alto" a great choice and highly recomended. The we had to share again the black pig, very flavoured kinda tstes like beef so soft it was but cured and with intense flavour as pig has. Very nice for our first night if you are not expecting a classy michelin ocasion but a great food and friendly service read more

We had many excellent meals in Portugal and the one at As Salgadeiras was among the best. Excellent service, outstanding wine recommendations and food and very reasonable prices. A little hard to find on a tiny side street in a hilly district, but it has a gorgeous cozy rustic ambience and is in a repurposed bakery - one of the former bread ovens is now the wine cellar. My sister and I ate at this restaurant in 2016 and had a wonderful time. The food was great as was the service, so we didn't hesitate to recommend this restaurant to our entire family when we decided to travel to Portugal for the New Year. We emailed to secure a reservation in August of 2018 (for December 31st 2018) and got a response that seemed to confirm our request. The email said they would be happy to have us and please wait for a follow up email with the menu. A few weeks later we received the menu email with just a quick explanation that this was the menu for the evening. Nothing else was explained. There was a link to a menu and a link to "booking conditions" but the booking conditions link did not work in English. We had everything set to English for their website, so it automatically went to that page (as we speak English, not Portuguese and they have a link for both) and there was nothing there. It was blank. As there was nothing indicated in the email or in the blank page following "booking conditions" we simply confirmed that we were attending by email. This was months in advance. Fast forward to New Years Eve when we all made our way to the restaurant, asked for our table and were told that we did not have a reservation because we had not paid a deposit. We quickly pulled up the confirmation email and website looking for any indication of this required deposit and found none and explained that to the host who greeted us. His immediate response was dismissive and condescending. He kept repeating that everyone else had paid the deposit and that all the emails had gone out to everyone who had requested a reservation. We pulled up the email and the website and showed that there was nothing in the email or the English side of the website explaining these details and his attitude did not change. He then called their reservation representative and explained the situation and passed off the phone to my sister who, again, explained the situation to much the same response. She insisted that everyone else paid and it didn't make sense that we hadn't gotten that information, but again, the information was not on the English section of their website or the email sent. Not only that, but there was no indication in the email that a deposit was due or that clicking on this tiny link was absolutely necessary to secure a reservation. So following all of this, we were left in a foreign country with seven people on New Year's Eve without a reservation for dinner, and the host could not even bother to apologize or make any effort beyond insisting the same thing over and over again. So as much as we enjoyed our first experience, I can no longer recommend booking here. read more

Expensive, self-important. Food was good but expensive. Most off-putting: Portuguese restaurants do not bring you a bill with a blank line for you to add a tip (you leave what you wish but are not prompted), but this place did; clearly, they look to serve and extract from tourists. read more

Food was excellent. Everything on the menu was good. The fish, pork and meat were very well cooked. The place is great and the atmosphere was great for the perfect family dinner. Now the negatives, waiters are slow, the food took ages. I was sat near the front door and I was amazed about the amount of people rejected when they had plenty of open tables. From the business perspective I recommend to expedite the cooking process and a closer supervision from the waiters. read more

I've been here twice. Excellent both times. Service is quite good. Had the Cabrito, grouper, and lamb chops. Highly recommend the cabrito or roast kid goat. We had reservations the first time. The second time was on a impromptu day trip to Lisbon and they squeezed us in @ 7:30 pm as long as we were done by 9 pm. Thank you guys! read more

I may be a tourist but I'm not dumb- this place treats visitors poorly. I used to live in Europe so I understand cultural differences and language barriers, but our waiter was insulting and flat out rude. We will not be back and we do not recommend anyone to have high expectations. read more

We ended up in this restaurant after failing to get a place at a couple of others (having not booked - always a mistake in Lisbon, apparently). However, we were delighted. We shared a delicious codfish carpaccio as a starter. I had possibly the most delicious piece of garoupa I have ever eaten, followed by a beautifully made creme brulee. My wife had some grilled prawns as a main course - superb, she said - and a chocolate fondue for dessert which I can vouch was also excellent. Wine was fab too. The atmosphere and decoration are very traditionally Portuguese. The quality of the service was very good, but the place has a tiny kitchen and unfortunately there was a large multinational works outing of about 16 people in the place when we were there. The kitchen may be able to cope with several couples or groups of 3-4 people, but it appeared as it they really struggled to get 16 main courses served at more or less the same time, so we had a long wait for our food. The moral is, if you see a large group of diners in the place when you step in through the door, it's probably a good idea to try somewhere else ! Overall though it was an excellent restaurant, and I would certainly go back again the next time I am in Lisbon. read more
