This restaurant was recommended by the hotel staff. I was it as I was walk up and down this block. Local Portuguese food and tasty! I didn't have reservations so I waited a bit, service was excellent, attentive and quick. Everyone works as a team. I had the octopus salad and white fish for dinner. Portions are huge, couldn't finish everything. The ambiance is clean, warm with wood and you won't regret eating here. Making reservations is better, however I had to wait 10 minutes for my table! We sat outside which allowed us to people watch but the ambiance inside was cozy, very cute and highly decorated. It was pricy due to the seafood items which is to be expected. Nice Neighborhood Spot, But Beware The Octopus..... My wife and I needed a place for dinner the first of 3 days in Lisbon in early December. Our hotel, Santiago de Alfama, originally recommended a restaurant which required a taxi ride, but after a 6 hour walking tour up and down hills on cobblestones, we asked for something a lot closer. They suggested Farol de Santa Luzia around the corner and it was a good choice. Here are the pros and cons of dinner: Pros: - If you're staying in or visiting the Alfama district, Farol de Santa Luzia is a convenient stop along the main road up the hill and across from a popular tourist stop.....Miradouro de Santa Luzia. - The main room is cozy and warm like what you'd expect in a neighborhood European restaurant. There's a 2nd room, but it wasn't needed on a Wednesday evening in early December. - Food was very good. I started with a Fish Chowder ($6)...excellent taste, but more broth than chowder...and followed it with Shrimp and Mussels Portuguese Style Risotto ($20) which was great. My wife ordered Gazpacho with Tomatoes, Onions, Garlic, Cucumbers and Green Peppers ($5) and Roasted Cod Fillet with Cornbread and Mixed Herbs served with Sweet Potatoes, Onions and Spinach ($27). She liked it a lot, but there was a "hiccup" along the way. See below. - Service was friendly in a brusque sort of way. He kind of reminded us of a taxi driver in New York. An experienced "old hand" who's probably waited on thousands of people. - Prices, as you can see, were very reasonable...especially coming from the US. Con: - When we gave him our order, he repeated it back and told my wife "and you're getting the Octopus". She corrected him and thought it was fixed. Not really. When my entree arrived, she got a huge Octopus which seemed as if it was recently alive. The server apologized, but didn't bring the correct dish for 30 minutes. I waited a while, but finished my meal before the Cod got there. The correct food - when it arrived - was actually very good. After a full day of exploring Lisbon and getting back to the area near our hotel apartment, not a lot of restaurants were open; hungry, we would look up restaurant ratings and try. This one had a very good rating, but when we walked over, we were told they were not taking any more customers for the night; they were full (good sign). We made it a point to try again the next day. We made sure to get back earlier in the evening. Success! Check in on yelp and get a free drink! Beyond that, the food is so good. I had the salted cod dish, and although it looks like a strange clown, it was so delicious. The serving size was huge and there was no way I could eat all of it, especially after we got a risotto dish as an appetizer. The service is attentive and pleasant and the food is exceptional. Definitely consider stopping here for dinner. My sister had the best octopus she has ever had here. There is not a lot of choices for a picky child eater, so just keep that in mind. read more

Decent food but some things were left wanting. Service was ok. We had the bolinhas which were solid but nothing amazing. The cataplanas was great flavour however the rice and potatoes that it came with were room temperature and the potatoes were frozen. Dessert was a Portuguese tart which was solid. read more

Wasn't sure if I had picked the right place when we walked in -- we were the only ones there. But this place was an absolute hole-in-the-wall gem! (And it did fill up more throughout our meal :) The clams were superb, and the grilled octopus with sweet potatoes was excellent. The service was quick and the atmosphere was very nice, although there was no outdoor seating. Located in Lisbon's iconic Alfama District is a true gem of Portuguese cuisine. After an evening visit to Castle Sao Jorge to see the sun set on the Atlantic, we decided to stop here for diner. The restaurant is near the Castle entrance and makes for an ideal stop before exploring the Alfama. We had made reservations for 830PM. Alma Lusa serves authentic Portuguese cuisine and tying it to a visit with the Castle you get a feel for the Lusophone culture that incorporated the sea and its colonial imperial spices. The restaurant has two dining spaces. We were sat in the back space. You are brought out some olives, bread and olive oil for dipping your bread. I ordered the porcao a la lentejana (stewed pork chunks on a bed of potatoes, covered with steamed mussels). This recipe had a kick to it and was awesome. The Asian spices leapt off the dish. The others at the table had cod; the Portuguese fish staple. Both dishes were generous in their portions. We topped it all with a vinho verde that was a steal at 18 euros for the bottle. The service was excellent and so was the food. When you exit the restaurant go across the street to the municipal park with commanding views of the city below. It is a spectacular site. If your lucky there will be a street artist singing. Reservations are a must as the restaurant is in a guide book and was packed for our late reservation. The price for all three fish entrees and a bottle was 75 euros; a steal. A meal such as this in the States would set you back over 120. read more

If I could give seven stars, I would do so for this restaurant. We ordered our favourite, cataplana, and it was phenomenal. The seafood was fresh, and the broth was to die for. We also ordered a range of starters, which were all very flavourful. Last but not least, their olives and olive oil were spot on -- you know you're at a proper restaurant when they have your mouth watering at olives already! Service was excellent. Our waiter was kind and prompt, and he even brought us small free glasses of port wine for dessert! Ambience is cozy and neighbourhood-like. Farol de Santa Luiza is located near the Sè (Cathedral), overlooking one of the terraces from where you can have a look at the old Lisbon. The restaurant is nice, serves Portugese food, staff was very helpful even though they were overly "nice" (saying "thank you" for almost anything that we told/asked them). Food was ok I guess, we have had better meals elsewhere in Portugal, but mind you, it's a premium spot for tourists so I guess that this has to be taken into account, as maybe the dishes are not done "exactly" as traditions would impose. Tourist trap alert. Also, the "good for kids" is nonsense. We asked our waiter who seemed to be the manager what he would recommend for our son (not a picky eater) and he literally said, "Nothing - we have nothing for kids." They also had no high chair and would not so much as bring us some plain white rice to feed our child first. Our entire stay in Lisbon, this was the unfriendliest restaurant with the worst service. Food here was completely overrated as well. Octopus chewy and the shrimp soup that got all the rave reviews was just okay. All in all, a big disappointment and the only meal we didn't enjoy during our 9 day stay in Lisbon. UPDATE AFTER OWNER RESPONSE: Actually, I double-checked if I could possibly be in the right restaurant because of all the reviews I had read. But I was. And judging by the owners douchey, passive-aggressive response, I can see why this restaurant is going downhill. A decent manager usually apologizes for bad service and looks into it. Perhaps this restaurant doesn't like brown people? And maybe this rude service and having "nothing for kids" as the waiter told us, is reserved for brown people . read more

This was one of the best places we at in all of Lisbon! Everyone loved their dishes! I have a awesomely grilled octopus with lots of olive oil and posted potatoes! Delicious! We shared some creamy sheep cheese for our starter. And John and My mom both got delicious desserts! We met the owners though the AirBNB place we stayed at which was on the top floor of the building the restaurant was in! They were so friendly and really have a passion for traditional Portuguese food! Lovely restaurant, nice decor, clean, feels fancy but the prices are low for the city. Also not like so many of the restaurants trying to trap you with the bread and cheese at the beginning. Their bread and oil and olives for 3 people was only 3.50 total instead of 2/3 euros each at other place . Which we had gone here sooner in our trip bc we would have eaten here more then once! Had the octopus starter, grouper, clams in garlic and oil, cheese cake, chocolate mouse (which was actually pudding, but was amazing never the less the translation), and a bottle of wine all for under £60. Bread, olives, oil and butter are provided. Would recommend anything we tried and wish we could have tasted more. We stumbled onto Farol de Santa Luiza wandering around a windy evening looking for a place to eat. The menu intrigued us and the diners we saw already looked happy so we went in. We were seated promptly even though we didn't have a reservation. We accepted the bread basket, ordered a bottle of local white wine and our food. My wife had salt cod over roasted potatoes while I had chicken stuffed with sausage over spinach. Beautiful presentation and attentive service. Both entrees were delicious! The wine was excellent and we finished by sharing a Portuguese tort topped with a plum. Excellent. Total cost €47! We arrived at around 7:30 pm, which is a bit early by European standards and it was already 3/4 full. By the time we left it was packed. Arrive early or make a reservation.
