John DeLaporte met with us even before we could wonder what should be done. He gently listened and walked us through each step of the process. The staff accommodated all of our requests from piping in music Pop loved - to designating a special area for the great-grandkids. Even weeks after, their friendly helpfulness and patience has changed my views (in a positive way) of walking into a funeral home. They really care...

August Helke and his son, Charles, made furniture, bar and store fixtures, as well as church cabinets. They started Helke Furniture Company, located at 319 Fourth Street, Wausau, in 1874. Since coffins differed little from fine upholstered furniture, the two craftsmen naturally evolved into the funeral business. Charles was among the first licensed embalmers in the Wisconsin. In 1939, Charles and his son Carl built Wausau's first funeral home located at 413 Jefferson Street. The founder's grandsons, Charles and Richard, were part of the business by 1962, when Helke's built a second funeral home on Wausau's expanding west side, at 302 Spruce Street. This remains the current site of Helke Funeral Home and Cremation Services. We are the oldest continually operated business in Marathon County.

First there was a "new" (I hope) employee that was helping us to plan the service for my Brother in Law, and lets just say - he should find another career path. If you are dealing with people during one of the toughest times of their lives you need to show sympathy toward the situation, which DID NOT happen once throughout our dealings with him. This includes the end of the service when we were basically "kicked out" of the sanctuary, as well as when he decided to strike up a political conversation with our guests (who does that at work?). The redeeming quality was the woman that we dealt with who shared her story of personal loss and understanding - but I would caution her to be sure of who she is talking to prior to calling them an "outsider, who is removed from the situation."

With offered support like Griefshare, the professional staff feel more like big brothers looking out for me and my loved ones. They thoroughly set my mind at ease with their information on pre-arrangements. My mind was totally set at ease. I highly recommend the fine people at John J. Buettgen to be a lighthouse to you when navigating life's difficult waters.

We were not pressured at all to add on anything else and the cost was far lower than we were quoted by a local competitor. They had no qualms about storing the cremains until we could return to the area a year later to have our own private scattering. Service was polite and professional. I know my mother would have been happy with our choice. Several years have passed since her death, but I still look back with satisfaction and tell everyone I know in the community about our positive experience there.

Their suggestions and patience were so beneficial while we were making important decisions to honor him, one final time. I will admit I felt compelled to write this today because in reading the reviews I could understand the most recent and perhaps mine will assure others that Maple Crest Funeral Home helped us so much. We too, will use the suggestion from them for the headstone monument. However, their assistance in this process is only to advise. The monument company that is chosen is responsible for the actual delivery and placement of that stone. This is not the first funeral I have been involved with. My husband is a minister in another city in WI and we have worked with many families over the years. I personally wanted to post this review now because while each client can express their viewpoint, I would never suggest that 1 star is merited. Emotions run rampant during seasons of grief and misplaced blame may not be fair to a reputable business such as this. My hope is that Mark B.'s family finds resolutions of this problem as I'm sure it has been upsetting. On behalf of our family, thank you Jacci and Dawn for your services!
