Our first belt exam--we are yellow belts...and on our way to orange!

My three girls (ages 7, 7 and 9) and I absolutely love Ashcrafts Martial Arts! We've been going for a while now and it is such a positive experience. I researched thoroughly when deciding where to go and this place stood out from all the rest for numerous reasons, but mostly because I wanted to have a real and authentic experience. It's no frills and the real deal, with affordable prices (better than all the other places I reserached) and a great "community" where we look forward to going twice a week. I went in thinking we'd learn Tae Kwon Do and some self defense, balance/coordination...but it is SO MUCH MORE than that. Steve Ashcraft is a master at what he does, and as he teaches, he also infuses his lessons with "life" lessons. Tae Kwon Do is more than just learning the moves and kicks, it's a full-on mentality about life. I oddly find it similar to meditating (but with a great work out) each time I go--you are learning to be in the moment and completely present in what you are doing. Steve Ashcraft is also an 8th degree Black belt and has major national titles--this guy knows what he's doing and I would not want to be learning from anybody else! Another thing I think sticks out is how well he and his teachers are with my girls. My three girls are not easy to handle! My twins have a hard time listening to instructions, but they are patient with them and make sure they learn everything else along with the rest of the class. If we are behind, they split the class up and take us in the back to learn separately. There is one-on-one attention here that you are not going to find at other studios in San Antonio. I highly recommend it!

A family that stays together, fights together and gets their Black belts together. Black belt here we come:)

He legitimately wants everyone to be better than he is. The art taught is called Pekiti Tirsia Kali, which consists of impact and edged weapons, and empty hands work. There are a number of organizations in the Pekiti Tirisia community, and this one belongs to the Pekiti Tirsia Global Organization, which has a far more direct approach then others I have seen. If you are looking for real self protection, particularly for the reality of weapons, this is a place that you need to check out. I have trained a variety of systems in the past, to include this one in another organization, and this is an awesome place to train without a doubt. The address for the listing is wrong as the school is now located on Hildebrand. Check the website for more info: http://www.saptk.com/contact.html

First, the gripes I guess…read more.. The gym has way too many things to do. When I am paying $100 a month to learn various forms of martial arts, I want to show up to locked doors and a gym that's in a 15 x 20 foot garage. Secondly, although the BJJ classes are great, it would be better if they were taught by a blue belt or even a white belt so that I wouldn't feel so insecure about going to class. Also, what's with the one female bathroom??? They don't even deserve one. In many countries women wouldn't even be aloud to train with men, let alone piss in the same building. Another major gripe I have is the fact that when it's hot, they open the front doors! WTF?!? I want sweat dripping from every foreskin and every orafice so that I can punish my opponent with more than just an arm bar or triangle (yes I am referring to my ball sweat). And what's with all those tires laying around???? I never see any cars in the back neing worked on. I don't know maybe I'm missing something. Last but not least, what's with the old bald guy teaching the muay thai classes? He seems to be the oldest guy in the gym. Half the time he doesn't even pay attention to his students. I think he has more of a crush on some of the other fighters and instructors at the gym. I could be a little jealous but I'm not. All that aside.... the place is really laid back which makes for an excellent learning environment. That's why I slapped about a million of those bumper stickers on the back of my Kia Rio. Hopefully it will help me get chicks.
