    I have had two bad experiences with Big Lots since April 2024…read more 1. I bought a patio rug online and of course paid for it. When I got to the store to pick it up the manager instructed me to pay again at the counter. I explained I had already paid but he insisted. Said their system was down. I inserted my credit card and paid again. When I was at the store yesterday I asked to speak to the store manager regarding another issue and an assistant came up front instead and didnt know anything about my issue so I proceeded to request the store manager once again and once again he sent his assistant. His assistant said he was busy. Too busy to speak to a customer??? So my issue yesterday was that I purchased a mattress on 7/6/2024 at 1:45 pm during the store 1 day sale of 30% off. When I purchased this mattress I was told that for every $100 I spent I would receive a $10 coupon. I did receive a coupon for $20 off of $40! I was not told that I had to spend additional money to receive my coupon earned. I ended up having to walk over to the store manager myself to speak to him. I asked him why he didn't come speak to me initially and his response was he was busy trying to get back $1100 that he didn't have. Poor customer service? As I was speaking to him I brought up the issue about the rug and I would be safe in saying he was the store manager that helped me but of course he knew nothing about it. He went on to tell me that any purchase made online does NOT reflect in the store! What???? My suggestion is that the employees be trained and get a new Store Manager! I also noticed on my last two receipts dated 7/6/24, that Big Lots wants me to take a customer survey for a chance to win $1000. It goes on to say the sweepstakes ended on 6/22/24. Please explain I've been a devoted customer to Big Lots for years in Illinois and Florida and I'm really upset with the East Peoria, Illinois store. Sincerely, Vicki Grashoff customer: 6559053

I like the wide aisles that have plenty of room to pass other shoppers without invading personal space. The store clerks are very friendly and helpful. One lady in particular, whose name is Cindy is an exceptional worker in the cashier lane. This lady made me aware of the discounts offered and coupons that are emailed to me monthly. I never had a cashier that let me in on the perks like Cindy. The other clerk that has been at Big Lots for several years is Joy; she knows her stuff. I go for her lane when it's not Cindy's day. I try to go through Cindy's lane when I have my Japanese aunt with me. She said she never had a store clerk that she understood. The furniture department is pretty quiet and peaceful. I tested out their mattress selection one day and fell asleep only to wake up to nobody knowing I had nodded off. I like the fact that the employees mind their own business and don't stalk and follow me around like I'm going to cause shenanigans or something. The layout is efficient, and assistance needed is minimal. Good place to get gifts or "a little something" to share with a friend. Overall, I think the shopping experience is stress free, and get in and out easily.. UNLESS it is SALE day! Go either early or late because all the grumpy women seem to shop on that day. I stop at the liquor store next door to fill up my mug, or Brass Key before shopping when it is SALE day. The whole routine is much better.

    Shady Practices - Buyer Beware…read more Check your receipts carefully and make sure you actually receive everything you've paid for. We chose Stegers of Pekin believing it would be a trustworthy place to purchase a new master bedroom bedframe and sofa. Unfortunately, our experience was the opposite. We purchased a higher-end bedframe along with delivery and setup. On our invoice, we were charged over $200 for the wooden slats that are supposed to come with the bed. The invoice also listed three metal supports at no cost, which Bryan Steger (a head of the family business) explained were "a gift" they include with all bedframes because slats are supposedly weak. When the bed was delivered, the wooden slats we had paid for were not included or installed--and the delivery/installation team never disclosed this. The free metal supports were attached poorly--crooked, unstable, and at risk of damaging both the frame and our hardwood floors. When we asked for the missing slats we had paid for, we made it clear we would hire our own handyman for installation because we did not trust Stegers' setup team to return. What should have been a simple correction turned into weeks of back-and-forth emails. During that time we were told: If we wanted the slats we paid for, we would have to return the metal supports (that are given free to every customer). The slats were "low quality" and "not worth having," despite charging us over $200 for them. No refund would be provided under any circumstance. Only after a week, a complaint to the BBB, and a letter to Vaughn-Bassett did the slats finally appear--left unceremoniously at my front door. To summarize: we were charged for parts that were never installed, denied a refund for those parts, not told by the installation team that they omitted them, insulted about the quality of the product we purchased, and forced to chase down what we rightfully paid for. This experience in August 2025 was gravely disappointing and not at all what we expected based on the company's reputation. Buyer beware: just because Stegers still carries the same family name does not mean it is run with the same trustworthiness, pride, or class as in the past. (Photos to be added soon.)
