On our final night in Istanbul (and Turkey) we wanted a post-dinner sweet fix, and started heading to a place that was well reviewed on Yelp and elsewhere, but when we got there it didn't look very appealing. Luckily for us, we had popped into this place on our way to the other one, and it seemed a lot more promising, so in we went.
The selection includes the usual suspects--baklava (walnut and chocolate were two varieties I remember), kadaifi in various configurations, and kunefe, for which the place is named. But they also had a Syrian confection that I was not familiar with--a square of kataifi pastry topped with a sort of pistachio praline. We ended up putting together a little assortment of four items to sample, and were looked after extremely solicitously by the staff, especially a Syrian guy (who pointed us in the direction of that Syrian treat). The coffee I ordered was among the best I had in Turkey, and the pastries were excellent, certainly better than most I had had elsewhere. Pricing is very fair, and posted clearly, so there is no mystery about what it's going to cost, and their English was very good. read more
