Two of us went on a busy Saturday night just before nine (I have since learned it was their busiest…read morenight since opening), we sat at the bar whilst our table was prepared. The general ambiance of the place is relaxed but classy. Everything was clean and spotless. The three floor staff did a tremendous job of meet and greet, taking orders, clearing tables and bringing food. Quite how they managed it is beyond me. Our starter was a mixed shellfish platter. This was simply steamed and consisted of razor clam (outstandingly good), cockles, prawns and I believe a crevette all in a simple sauce that in no way smothered the flavour as some do. To accompany we had some delicious oregano bread to dip into the lovely juices. Our main course was lamb in a rosemary, thyme and garlic jus. The lamb was rightly served pink and fell off the bone.We were also asked before hand if we wanted it pink which I thought was a nice touch. Presentation was lovely and the accompanying veg included wonderful potatoes roasted in goose fat. To drink we had a bottle of the house red at 10.95 a bottle which is very good and I believe too cheap ! We really enjoyed our meal and I would recommend it to anyone. I never heard anyone else complaining and in fact everyone who left looked really happy and complimented staff as they left. What particularly impressed me was the professionalism of the staff. It was manic at times yet they remained calm throughout and saw it through. It is obvious to me that the staff both front and back of house care very much about what they do here and the attention to detail is obvious. It is also obvious that they are improving and are striving to get better. I came here on their first night and the meal was not as good but on speaking to both chefs they were aware of their mistakes and have made it better. If you consider that they have both come from a family run, fast paced Italian restaurant which catered to the masses, what they have achieved here is even more incredible. They have set their sights and standards high and I can see nothing but success in their future here. They could do with another staff member at busier times but that in no way is a criticism of what was a great team effort, a memorable experience and something I shall definitely do again. I have read some of the other reviews here and some of the negative comments about the staff I find very hard to believe. I have never seen a more professional front of house team and I heartily commend both them and this restaurant.

Ultimately, I thought the food was a little disappointing at this price point, but that may be personal taste as I found everything a little over sauced, which might not be an issue for others. Also, despite taking advice on the menu, I ended up with two very similar fish for boyh starter and main, so I suggest going for more of a contrast. The people here are very welcoming, and I would definitely go back if in Scarborough again.

The prices are more than you might expect to pay at a seaside restaurant (although still very reasonable) But this is no regular kind of seaside restaurant - a well kept secret which is worth every penny. Its a rarity for scarborough to have a place which has won awards and been recommended by respected reviewing bodies - Lanterna has been recommended by Which and won the official Italian restaurant of the Year Award. To back this up, testimonials from satisfied customers line the walls. A family run restaurant, service is friendly and never rushed. The food is magnificent. The wine list is extensive and authentic. The desserts are fantastic. Its not a place to visit as an everday experience, but as a treat, its unmissable. Remember to book in advance though - its only a small (around 30 seater) restaurant and is only open for a few hours per day.

On one of these occasions the waiter was a nervous English guy who had very little knowledge of the menu so when I asked him questions he just went red and said he would ask the chef. Ah the chef, Claudio is well known in the local Italian community for trying to do it all himself. Hence the sometimes incredibly slow service. I once waited an hour between starter and main course then I walked out. Yes it is good to see a chef that cares but get some help in there ! The food is generally good but is too expensive. The general ambiance is fine for romantic meal for two but I would not bring children here. Decor is fine and modern with a good waiting area. No pizza which is a slight detraction. Staff ever changing. If they could get consistency there then they could recapture that atmosphere they once had. Wine list is good but expensive. UPDATE I have been here about ten times in the last six months. I cannot get enough of the place. He has reined in the menu a bit and stuck at what he is good at. The risotto and pasta dishes are simply wonderful and the meat is still meltingly beautiful. He has just changed menu to reflect seasonal availability and has added some exciting variations such as salmon, swordfish etc. meal deal still on and well worth it. If you come to eat in Scarborough just once, come here. UPDATE JUNE 2012Its great to find a decent restaurant open on a monday night in Scarborough. For starter I had asparagus wrapped in Parma ham, stuffed with ricotta and baked in the oven. It was brilliant. A superb use of the ingredients. Claudios menu reflects spring and what is available locally. His Summer menu I am assured will be even better. My partner had baked goats cheese on pears and that too was lovely. For mains I had a fist sized fillet steak in a sage and garlic sauce wrapped in parma ham served on crostini with veg.It was so good I wanted to cry. It was simply awesome in the true sense of the word. I asked for it rare and it was just perfect, simply perfect. I did not need a knife to slice it as it was so tender. (SEE PHOTO) My partner had Risotto Reale which comes with a steak on it. She loved it, even though she had it murdered to well done it was still soft and tender. Service as always was great, attentive and friendly. I have raved in recent reviews about steak at other establishments in the town. They are superb. However the fillet steak served here is not just the best I have had in this town, it is the best I have had anywhere. Pure magic. You must try it.

In Scarborough you will be hard pressed to find any of the more noteworthy establishments open for a lunch time service. This of course plays into Pizza Hut's hands. I choose four stars because the staff although swamped with custom have a sense of urgency whilst maintaing a slight personal touch. This is more than less family orientated Italian chains such as ASK can claim and for such a location you can forgive easily any waiting you may endure. Pizza Hut actually isnt bad at all, and this branch is no exception to that. Like everywhere else in the town, its stupidly busy in season and occasionally at weekends, but its also the kind of place you never really have to wait long to get a table. Its very family friendly, and the menu tends to offer something for anyone, from pizza to pasta, which is always tasty if occasionally a little on the ordinary side. The service is always friendly and unhurried and its certainly a place which warrants repeat custom.

The ground floor has a long bar on one side with open seating opposite. Then up a short flight of stairs is a Mezzanine open kitchen whih I think is great. The staircase then splits with one fork leading to an open eating area with great views to the harbour and the other leading to the toilets and a further small, sechluded seating area. The toilets by the way are bright, modern and spotless. The lighting throughout is just right neither too bright or too dark. I came with a friend who recommended the place to me. I immediately warmed to the owner and we were very well looked after. I am told that they do intend to expand the menu with the emphasis on Tapas style eating and traditional Spanish cuisine. At the moment the menu is rather limited but what they do they do very well. I think the best way to describe the food style is Meditteranean bistro. There are four choices of starter and Garlic bread. The starters are Calamares a la Romana, which we both had, crisp golden battered squid with a salad garnish and a delightful aioli with paprika. This is the first time I have had squid where the batter was actually crisp. Very, very nice. The squid was £7 which I thought was reasonable. Other starters on offer are smoked salmon and prawns in a lemon and pepepr dressing with salad also at £7. Then at £6 there is avocado and bacon salad and a tomato and mozzarella salad. Garlic bread £4.50 and with tomato an extra 50p. For mains the options are from the grill or pizza. There are five different types of pizza on offer, all cooked the proper way (thin and crispy in an Italian pizza oven). These range in price from £6.50 for a basic Margherita to £9.50 for Antons special which sounds fantastic with Jamon, chorizo and peppers. (having that next time!) On the grill one has a choice of sirloin, fillet, rump steak burger, chicken breast. All served with fries and a salad. The fillet steak is £19. I had this and asked for it blue. It was cooked perfectly for me and virtually fell to pieces. It came with a little pot of Bearnaise sauce. All the beef is sourced locally at Stepney Hill farm and matured for 21 days minimum. It oozed quality. There are three desserts on offer, fudge cake, coffee and walnut cake and ice cream. I had the fudge cake which was a delightful end to the meal. With our food we had a good bottle of Rioja at £18 and two espressos with brandy at the end. The total bill was £83 which I thought was very good. Service was friendly, fast and efficient. All in all I enjoyed this place very much and I shall definitely be back. They have placed their emphasis on quality and not quantity. So although I was still hungry I was very happy and not uncomfortably full. I think they've got the balance just right. In the future if they can truly hold on to their ideals and bring in a range of Tapas as well this would be fantastic. One other major bonus for this place is that they are injecting life and quality back into a tired and dog eared sea front. If we happen to get some sun this summer this will be the place I will want to relax in and watch the sun go down. Bravo I wish you every sucess.
