This is the first review I have ever written on here because I was so disgusted with this place and all the money it has stolen from the community. It's kind of long, so if you don't want to read the whole thing, here is the one sentence version: Aspen Dental actively cons the community by diagnosing non-existent gum disease and trying to sell unproven treatments, and they use fear and fast talk to achieve those means along with a focus on targeting the elderly. Unless you want to commit this year's salary to solving problems you don't actually have, go see someone else. Don't. Go. To. Aspen. The Long Version I have a lot experience in security and dealing with con men, and it's still amazing to me that this operation is legal. Their whole strategy is a scam designed to sell you (unproven) treatments you don't need at incredibly high prices. I confirmed this theory with two other local dentists before I decided to leave this review. I expect greed from Blair County businessmen, but this is a different level. They are going to tell you that you have gum disease and dramatically push you towards unproven antibiotic treatments for a breezy $5,000, and your insurance won't pay for it because they know it doesn't work. I watched them lie to a senior couple about that specifically when the insurance company refused to pay for treatments they didn't need. In particular, don't trust the lady that is checking your gums at your intake. I wish I could name drop her to highlight the guilty, but I forget what it was. She is lying to you and will tell you that you're ill, scare you, sell you an overpriced toothbrush, and take home a commission. I can't tell if she believes the lies she is peddling (in other words, is unintelligent) or if she is conning people for the money, but it doesn't matter. Here's what happened: I went there because I needed to have a filling replaced. They ignored that and tried to convince me I have severe gum disease, but they didn't realize they had told me the same nonsense five years ago and none of what they said would happen ever happened. The con lady said they couldn't fill the tooth without treating my gums because it's like fixing the house's siding with a bad foundation, which is a ridiculous comparison. I would need the tooth filled either way, my mouth is not an old house. I'd bet that the middle aged lady that does the evaluations and yells numbers at you directly benefits from whatever nonsense she can sell you, because she talks fast and uses assumed consent in the same way a shark does at a pool hall. She is also unpleasant, and became more unpleasant when she realized I wasn't going to buy anything from her. Her job is to sell stuff, not care for patients, and it is very clear where her priorities are. My experience with sharks immediately told me I was dealing with a con-woman once I heard the way she talked and how stupid she assumed I was. Perhaps you'll find her less abrasive? Anyway, they refused to replace the filling unless I treated the imaginary gum disease first. When I asked them if I should leave the same way I came in, they suddenly changed their minds and made an appointment to fill the tooth. Because of course they did. The garbage filling they eventually gave me was 350 dollars, and it broke immediately - within hours. They also tried, through presumed consent, to sell me an implant for another casual 10ish grand and said my jaw bones would waste away to nothing and ruin my life if I didn't do it. My mom has been missing that same tooth for 30 years and she is just fine. In order to provide this "service," they made me come in three times instead of just doing it the first time. I just wanted a filling to be replaced. If I knew there were going to be all these lies and stuff I would have just filled it with super glue myself and got similar results. Amazed at how blatantly predatory these people are, I decided to see another dentist to make sure my evaluation was correct. He fixed all my problems for half the price. He also confirmed my suspicion - that this organization lies for a living and tells everyone that they have gum disease. He then cleaned my teeth for 150 dollars (with xrays) and told me that I take very good care of my teeth - because I take very good care of my teeth. I can't give his name because he told me about Aspen's con in confidence. Overall, Aspen is a really great example of modern corporate greed. I was taught that lying to people to take their money is wrong, but nowadays I guess it's just good business. As a fun sidenote, a few years ago I had them pull a broken tooth, and it was literally the most excruciating thing I have ever experienced - on par with my severe eye injury. Then they wouldn't give me pain killers even though they pulled part of my jaw bone out with the tooth. I waved it off as an accident but now I see it's just terrible care at a high price. 0/10, do not pass go, do not give them your 200 dollars. read more

I arrived on time for my appointment, but the receptionist forgot I was there. Only when they were closing did they acknowledge me--and then asked me to reschedule, despite the fact that I had taken time off work to be there. When I asked to speak with the physician, two additional staff members approached the desk, seemingly to intimidate me into compliance. Let me preface this by saying this is the first yelp review I've ever written. For me to take the time to do so should tell you something. Scammers. There's no nice way to say it. Stay away from Aspen Dental...period. I visited the Altoona office this past week. I will say they were very thorough with xrays, but that's the only positive you'll get out of me. What I can't wrap my head around is how a cleaning was going to cost me 3600 dollars. That's with me having really good dental insurance. All due to my gum disease requiring an antibiotic. When I said "well then let's just skip the antibiotic that isn't covered by my insurance and get a regular cleaning", I was turned away and told that it was part of the procedure. Absolute horse manure. I'd like to know what antibiotic costs 112 dollars, and that's per tooth. This is predatory. Let's make sure we add as much as we can to this client's bill, and make sure it's not covered by insurance. This business model shouldn't thrive, but when most of your income is from feeding off insecurity and vanity, for some reason it does. Now I'm also in the same boat as a previous yelper where I have to wait another 6 months just to get my teeth cleaned. Aspen did absolutely nothing for me but somehow that counts as a cleaning. They broke a tooth (crown) I just had fixed within the past 2 yrs. They said they would pay and fix it out of pocket but the tooth had to be cut out by oral surgery. Now 6 months later I get a bill for $950 because they never paid oral surgery bill. read more

I arrived 20 minutes early for a scheduled appt at Muncy, PA office to be told I had no scheduled appt. I "had not confirmed orally" to them. I had confirmed via text and email, but this office requires oral confirmation. Obviously I am frustrated. I ask for the office managers name. A woman turns around, tells me that she is the office manager and she "is not required" to give me her name. Similarly, she refused to give me the dentist's name. They are aweful! Just a money mill. I had my teeth removed and got dentures there in 2022. They tried to pull teeth that didn't need removed. Then 3 years later I get a call from a collections agency saying I owe them 358 dollars! They never sent me a bill. plus they charged me for 2 teeth that didn't need remove. I already paid almost 6,000 after insurance. And they can't tell me or give me a reason I owe this money? There is no accountability. They can't show me an explanation. scam! read more

I went there after going to Aspen Dental in State College (who "lost" a crown they had made for me). The receptionist was ok. The dental hygenist yelled at me for not brushing my teeth for at least two minutes every time. After I told her that I did do that she basically called me a liar. The next visit was for a new filling. I just assumed that since they did this as a business that I must need a new filling. When I got there for the appointment, I asked again why I needed this new filling when I was having no issues with that tooth. The dentist, who had already started the procedure, told me that the filling was old and might give me problems down the road as he was prying it out. Too late to say no then! I wish I would have known this before he started. That would have been a HUGE NO! Another visit they told me my teeth were going to fall out unless I had scaling and antibiotics injected to the tune of $1500. I had just been to the Aspen Dental in State College a few months back and was told that my teeth and gums were in good shape. After the procedure I got a letter of denial from my insurance company. When I called them they told me the dentist office was submitting the claim incorrectly so they could not pay it. I told the office this message at least three times and still they did not submit it correctly and ultimately I was responsible for the payment!! The company engages in fraud. Here is what happened: the hygienist lady in a dark suit pulled two of my fillings while cleaning, left me bleeding while explaining "that's how much force you have to use to floss your teeth" and said they fell out because I was drinking too much tea. How many hygienists can tell you medical advice? Sounds like illegal practice of dentistry by a hygienist. Then she made excuses not to call the doctor, saying he's busy and can't see me. The doctor said the fillings that were accidentally pulled would be free for me to fix. Instead, the billed my insurance which increased the out of pocket payments for other procedures which they billed. They also threaten you with their body language to make their dental work really poor of you ever decide to complain. This is fraud and this is illegal. Why isn't Attorney General investigating it? They won't put my old crown back in place because they drilled a hole in it, and want me to pay for another crown. What a great business model?! Sounds like fraud. They left me walking with holes in my teeth because they didn't immediately fixed the fillings that they pulled in hopes that the tooth will get more damage so they can earn more money. I still have a crown that they will refuse to put back for over 3 months, also hoping that I will develop an infection so that they can make money on a root canal. I scheduled an appointment at Aspen Dental probably six months ago. My appointment was for today at 4:30 pm. I had it documented in my personal calendar. I received a confirmation email from the Aspen Dental office yesterday indicating my 4:30 pm appointment time. I called to tell them I was on my way and running a bit behind schedule, and the receptionist told me that my appointment was at 3:45 pm, and I would have to be rescheduled as I was late. I told her she was wrong and that I received a confirmation email from their office yesterday (see attached). She told me that the computer must have glitched and that they would not take me. I would never have booked an appointment before 4:30 pm because I work. I know that I did not book an appointment for 3:45. I find this level of disorganization to be unacceptable. I am glad that I did not receive care from this office because, after reviewing the rest of their yelp reviews, it appears my experience is not unique. read more

Most other reviews complain about billing and customer service, which were true for me (charged for "hidden" costs like a $150 electric toothbrush, etc) but I am also writing a review to indicate that the QUALITY of care was subpar. I made an appointment for an in-office whitening procedure. I came in approx. 15 minutes late for the 2-hour whitening process, and called beforehand and was told that it would be fine. Great. So I arrive and the girl at the front desk told me that the hygienist performing the whitening wasn't even in the office and I would have to reschedule! I told her that I even called before I came in and made the commute and she insisted that it was a computer mistake or that I hadn't answered the phone when they called me the week prior regarding the appt change. Okay. So I'm arguing with her for about 15 minutes, and while she looks for a later spot to book me, the hygienist comes out and tells me to come back! So the office is disorganized and I end up starting my procedure half an hour late due to this discrepancy. We start the whitening. Hygienist throws a bunch of paperwork my way without bothering to explain out of it. It's obvious she's rushing and she puts my whitening gel on to start the whitening. During my whitening intervals, she leaves the room and instructs me to "yell if I need anything." This went on for 3 more cycles and she comes back and asks me if I want an additional 4th cycle. I agree. During this cycle I am experiencing a lot of pain and hygienist is nowhere to be found. Whatever, I wait it out. She comes back, cleans out my mouth, and tells me to go on my way to pay. Uh... okay. No aftercare or anything. I mention that I am experiencing a lot of pain (cannot finish my sentences even) and no instruction other than to take some advil. I promptly pay and leave the office. Immense pain ensues. I am eventually in so much pain that I am in tears. I read the instructions for the treatment that I was given and the manufacturer's directions are to apply desensitizing gel to help with discomfort.... guess what I wasn't given - the gel! So after hastily performing a $600 procedure Aspen couldn't even bother to provide the pain management for afterwards. I call back, hygienist basically says they didn't give it to me or make trays because I was so late (uh... I was so late because your secretary told me to reschedule and argued with me...) But not even that, why would you do a procedure when you KNOW you can't give the patient any pain management for afterwards?? I would have preferred to reschedule at that point. Pain lasts about 24 hours, whatever. I still have to go in for these trays and this gel. I get the moulds made and I'm told to come back the next day for them. So... if the trays take a whole day to make... why did the hygienist say the only reason I didn't get them was because I was 30 minutes late for the procedure appointment? Even if I got there "on time" she wouldn't have had the trays or gel for me. Basically, yes, they're expensive. But with this extra price I expected superior quality of care. I'm not upset by the price, but rather the quality of care and the customer service. Will NEVER return for any future dental work, whether it be cosmetic or health-wise. Obviously good dental care, but reception was very rude. When we arrived at, appointed time, and waited while they held a conversation with the lady ahead of us. BOTH receptionist were talking to the lady about a get together they had earlier that week, nothing dental related! Then when we finally got to sign in, they said we had to reschedule do to not being 15-20 mins earlier! NO ONE told us we had to be there early, and we would have been at least 10 mins early if they hadn't made us wait! After rescheduling and making a point to be there 30 mins early, it was fine. Dentist was kind and funny, and nurses I dealt with were very pleasant. My appointment was scheduled for 11:15. Say till 11:45 had x Ray done, taken to an examine room waited for 20 minutes for dentist, then waited for 20 minutes for dental hygienist. I thought I would get a cleaning at that time and a filling but NO not today. Then I was escorted to waiting room to be scheduled for the cleaning n filling and had to wait again as the front end girls were ALL OUT TO LUNCH. No good business that has a constant flow of people to check in and reschedule all LEAVE for lunch at same time. About 1:15 I got up left a note on the receptionist desk and left. I can't say it enough, WATCH YOUR MONEY AND READ YOUR EXPLANATION OF BENEFITS FROM YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY. My prior dental insurance only covered 2 dentist offices in altoona. We went with Aspen due to more in network providers and fastest to get into. My husband and I went together for our first appointments. They're office is nice and the staff was friendly to our faces. The 1st appt they don't do the cleaning... the 1 thing we both needed. We had updated xrays and a general inspection of our teeth. We were then shuffled into an office to review payment, offered a bluetooth toothbrush for $100+, and set up for a follow up for the cleaning. My husband also needed an additional appt for a filling. We paid as we were asked appt number 1 for that appt, f/u cleaning, and his filling appt well over $300. Our appointments came and went. We then received our insurance statements saying I'd owe $50 and my husband would owe $75. I immediately called asking why we paid much more than that appt 1. I was told our accounts would have a credit for future care. I demanded a refund. That took 2 more additional phone calls to be done. Fast forward to a few months ago. We go in for routine cleanings. We get 2 a year per insurance and are in network five aspen. When checking in I'm asked to pay $40. I ask for what, and I'm told for fluoride treatment. I told her I would decline this and instructed my husband to do the same. I've now received 2 bills for $35 for my cleaning. I called after the first and was told it was fluoride cost. I DECLINED THIS! the hygienist even said for 40 bucks she'd just make sure toothpaste had fluoride in it. That's not even it completely. They wanted 40 at the office and the bill is 35... why the discrepancies?! I pay extra for dental coverage, and I go to an in network provider. This just doesn't make sense to me... Monday will be another call and another fight due to their mistake.. I have changed jobs and selected a different insurance carrier to get us out of aspen. read more

My name is Darrell Hooper I am 47yrs old and I was petified to go to the dentist. Dr. Mohney told me that I had nothing to worry about . So I trusted him and in return he was very kind and gentle and that I had nothing to worry about he put my fears to rest, I had 8 teeth removed and never felt a thing.I also want to thank Brittany and Christina they insured me that I would not bleed to death, which I was terrified of.
