My hygienist was very thorough and personable. She explained everything before she started working on the next area so there were no surprises. She did a great job cleaning my teeth. The dentist was great too but he did remove his mask towards the end while standing up and explained my treatment plan. He did maintain distance but was still in the room with me so that made me a little uncomfortable. I also wished they could elaborate more on preventive measure for future reference in addition to treatment. Overall, I am satisfied with my first cleaning visit here and will return for appointments.

In early September 2025 I was at my remote lake house in Hiles, WI with discomfort from food trapped under a molar. No dentists nearby were available so I searched Wausau, Wisconsin and found Dr. James S. Kim who advertises "all phases of dentistry." Called 9/4 and explained that food kept getting caught causing pain. Staff told me to take Tylenol/Aleve for almost two weeks as the earliest appointment: she booked was 9/16/25. No mention of cost. This was obviously NOT an emergency visit and should not have been charged as one. I was trusting they would offer me a standard of care required by the profession at standard fees for the area. The day before the visit they called and informed me I had to pay $379 for the appointment with no explanation of what it included. As a new patient, I assumed it would cover x-rays, exam and cleaning from a dental hygienist. I trusted they were ethical. I drove one hour. The staff took x-rays and set me in a room. Dr James Kim examined my teeth and told me there was a cavity. I asked about a teeth cleaning and was told there would be no cleaning - that it costs an additional $142 and they were booked out until November. They told me they have no hygienist to clean teeth - that Dr. Kim does all cleanings. Dr Kim explained I had a cavity and his treatment recommended was: Two crowns - the tooth with the cavity and the one next to it Wisdom tooth extraction - (it was not cracked or causing me any problems whatsoever) Night guard Total cost - $5,593.00 for treatment for 1 cavity. I inquired about doing a filling but Dr. Kim claimed a simple filling was "impossible." I was leaving Wisconsin at the end of October so I did not book anything with Dr. Kim. I believed and trusted him when he said I needed all of this recommended treatment for $5,593. He asked me what I did for a living which I found odd. He did not ask me anything else about my life. I immediately made an appointment in St Louis with a general / cosmetic/restorative dentist. I did not tell them about my experience or diagnosis with Dr Kim. The soonest they could see me was November 19, 2025. Diagnosis after new X-rays: a cavity and treatment was routine filling needed -- $185. No crowns, no extractions, no mouth guard - no SCAMMING! For reference, my St. Louis new-patient visit ($400) included for 1 year - two cleanings, 2 fluoride treatments, full X-rays, and 2 exams and discounts for treatments. Far more than the nothing I got for $379 from Dr. Kim. This felt like classic predation on a senior in pain far from home: delay care, spring a big fee, then scare with thousands in unnecessary irreversible treatment. I've demanded my $379 back and filed with the BBB. Small-claims court in Marathon County is next if they don't refund by December 10, 2025. Seniors and out-of-towners -- AVOID DR KIM and this office. I am considering filing a complaint with the Wisconsin Dental Association & American Dental Association

When questioned, VanSykes said it was within range even though on X-rays, it's obvious. Next, I was offered a 'free' tooth mold for veneers if I would have chosen to get them. When I decided not to, they charged me $395 for the mold. I mentioned it to the dentist that he, himself said they were free, and he denied. Then I overpaid one of my procedures by $250, they didn't tell me that I had a credit and when I accidentally found out by from one of the billing folks, they were not going to give it back in case one of my next procedures was not paid. I have insurance and always paid everything on time. Their billing department was incompetent for submitting claims to my insurance and I had to call them many times just to get them to submit the claims properly. Recommend to find somewhere else and be aware of a huge amount of great reviews, not sure how they got them.

So on the appointment day before the appointment, I had off work for the appointment and were able call the office. When I called the front desk, front desk lady pretended to not know what I was asking about regarding the appointment. I asked if I could still bring my children to the appointment. She said what appointment when in fact she was the person who scheduled it a month ago and had been doing several calls the days before leaving messages about confirmation of my children going to the appointment, suddenly didn't know. I gave her the time and date and she said oh that appointment. We have to reschedule because it's our policy that if you can't confirm you are coming we now have to reschedule. Wow, they truly do not care what I had to go through in a month in advance just get my day off. It is not easy for me to be able to take a day off and they do not care. Also, what I had to do to get both of my children off for that day. Wow after arranging my day off of work a whole month in advance just to be canceled automatically. how stupid I felt to arrange my schedule and can't even go and how dumb that I had to call the schools back, tell them oh I'm sorry my children didn't get to go to their appointment so I will be bringing them back to school. Also for such policy, it is not available on their website that if they call and can't confirm that you can't make it to the appointment that you're appointment is automatically canceled and have to reschedule. When they scheduled it, it's their responsibility to inform you of their policy and I didn't get informed. Even the doctors office doesn't treat our family this way and we actually receive a reminder about our appointment. If the dental office have so much time to call and try and confirm we are going to the appointment then they should have time to complete reminder calls about appointments. This place has become trash, and have poor customer service. I can understand their concerns and frustration if I am a known repeat customer who never shows up for scheduled appointments and visits. But I have never stood them up and if I am unable to make it I have called and rescheduled. For such a policy it should also be public and available on their website.
