    My little baby " Dream"
    Drena D.

I found AHS through Pet finder, I was looking for a specific type of cat a tuxedo. I had one about 18 years ago and he was the best. The cat I originally came in for was not a good match. Marcos the cat keeper who was very nice said I have the perfect cat for you. He introduced me to at the time Meu she came up to me immediately and wanted to play. We both chose each other at that exact moment. Unfortunately I could not take her at the point she had to get spayed. Those few days felt like a lifetime lol but I came back did my paperwork and waited for them to bring her out. Happy to say it has been a week and half and we are bonding and she is learning her new name Dream. Can't thank the staff enough for the smooth transition to getting her. My birthday is next month I am going to tag the shelter on Facebook for all donations to go to them

They accepted four kittens and the mother over Memorial Day weekend. They got the kitten into Medical right away, because she swallowed the nipple of the bottle. They answer their phones promptly and really care for the animals.

A TRAUMATIC experience to say the least. I went to the shelter with the intention of adopting a kitten and found the perfect baby boy to bring home. I was told he was FIV+ but was assured it was safe to bring home to my other cat and he'd live a long happy life. He wasn't neutered yet so I was initially made his foster mom until his appointment the following week when I could adopt him. I spent that week bonding, cuddling, and becoming immensely attached. When I brought him in for his appointment to get neutered, I was told it could take 2-3 hours and they would rerun his bloodwork. Mind you he had been there since October (it's now Jan) and no additional bloodwork had been ran since he was brought in. Hours had gone by with no update so I called the shelter only to transferred directly to the vet to be given heartbreaking news. They had messed up his initial bloodwork and said he was actually FELV+ and no longer adoptable because I have another cat at home. Come to find out it's a highly contagious fatal condition with a low life expectancy!!! I not only put my other cat at risk of the disease by being allowed to bring him home in the first place but also had to process the fact the cat I anticipated being mine forever was no longer coming home with me. While I understand the holidays are the busiest time, it is absolutely unacceptable for a situation like this: messing up the blood test, initially assured he would live a long happy life with me and my other cat, letting me bring him home and possibly exposing my cat to FELV, AND not calling me to update me on the situation. A cruel and heartbreaking mess, do better!!!!!

Jerry Springer on the day we took him home

Like all animal shelters these days, this place is overburdened with animals--and especially with the sheer number of people unloading pets they no longer can care for or no longer want. I found an English Springer Spaniel on Petfinder (www.petfinder.com) a couple of years ago, and went to visit him at AHS. He was emaciated and friendly, and I took him home. There are tons of beautiful dogs and cats there; please consider adopting from a shelter, where you can be sure you'll be saving a life. AHS is a proactive organization which does an amazing lot with what they have. They have three locations in New Jersey, including Popcorn Park Zoo, which currently has four tigers--two who had been intended to be used for a canned hunt, and two rescued from a sanctuary that couldn't care for them. (No, the tigers aren't up for adoption.) If you're in or near New Jersey, consider adopting a cat, dog, bunny, or even a parrot from AHS--and never, ever buy a pet from a pet store.

My cat whom I got the privilege of adopting at the Humane Society in Newark NJ!!

This is a rather small place; a trailer so to speak with super cute cats of all sizes and ages. When I first walked in, I was greeted by 2 very nice ladies that was extremely helpful and patient while I looked around at all of the cats. They will ask you if you have any pets and if you do- they will ask about their personalities. The one cool thing I liked about this place is that they let the cats walk around and allow you to play with them and hold them to get a feel for your future potential fur baby. They (the ladies) weren't pushy and was genuinely interested in getting to know who would be adopting those cats. One of the ladies even took me next door to show me another cat that might be a great companion for my cat that I have at home. They also have dogs here for adoption as well although very minimal. There is plenty of parking however when you come in drive very slow since there may be cats walking around. Overall, I would recommend adopting from here as you can tell the staff really cares about the pets. Although I didn't adopt today- I could totally see myself coming back as there were a few cats that I really liked.

I travel a lot, and so it wouldn't be fair to the animal for me to have another cat. I was staying just across the channel in Staten Island, and when I found this place, I was here! There are plenty of cat toys to play with, and I also downloaded a cat toy with things like fish and mice going across the screen on my phone, which the cats found interesting. What a great time, I hope to come back when I'm in the area. Thank you!

I shall exclude the volunteer staff especially the younger ones who were amazing and so filled with love and ambition. But as for the rest of this rescue where one is supposed to be able to "Adopt"? What a laugh. Every other negative review I have read here on Angel Paws could not be more accurate in their experience. I had/saw the same upon taking my friend to adopt her second "fur-baby" (Is this a term now? I feel just as nuts as the lady running the joint). Long, long, and over dramatically short (which could have been unwarranted mind you). Arriving at opening in the evening, which seemed absurd to me to begin with, walking right in with several other families, we were greeted by lovely volunteers racing around trying to feed every little meow and squeek coming from every known corner of this small facility (I use that word as a kindness). I questioned if this was the first time that day these dear furry angels were seeing people. Most working said the owner did what she could during the day and they came at night, night being 6pm. Speaking of said owner, it was if she was the "man behind the curtain" heard of but never seen. My friend, after holding and bonding with 3 or 4 kittens believed she had found "the one". Filling out an application, as one would do, we were told we would be called within 1-2 days. Great! A week passes, I call and get voicemails, leave messages, never reach a person. She goes back for a second visit. The kitten is still their. She asks. Oh the owner has been terribly busy, but don't worry, this weekend latest, she says. The week and weekend come and go. So finally I go in myself. Because at every shelter and rescue I've worked at, to get one of these sweeties into a forever home? Top priority. And some I worked at went as far as a background check. Never did they take over a week. So yes, I went, I saw, I wanted to or may have not only shed a tear for my friend but also those poor cats and kittens trapped behind that glass window. Without needing to give reason my friend was rejected. Application declined. The owner deemed herself so high and mighty that not even a reason or explanation was given as a kindness. This is only of "those" places. A few bucks shy of the remaining "pet stores" there are. A lovely few from the front, but for the poor babies down in the basement (And oh yes, they are down there ) never seen in thsirnown mess, this "rescue" is a sham. The staff, whom I finally got to speak to me one on one all said the same. High adoption fees, low number of adoptions, abuse of funds, abuse of volunteer offered time, minors included folks. This nightmare of a "holier than thou" owner should have to face the furry jury for her crimes. Crazy cat lady would have been a relief compared to the monster described to me and read about in not only Yelp reviews, but upon further investigation into the community, and just about anyone whom has crossed her path. The same story rings true. Save yourself the time, and your children the tears. Not to mention the absurd $250 adoption fee. Which other than private rescues who strictly foster their litters, I have never seen that "price". There are some amazing rescues and shelters out there with babies and adults just as well deserving of a home. I highly recommend Somerset Animal Rescue in Bridgewater. And depending on your area the ASPCA or Woodbridge/Edison rescue. I just found my own newest addition to our family at Friends of Linden Shelter after a look on Petfinder.com Good luck to you all! Be safe and above all be smart! (Side note: For all who may need to surrender their loved pet for whatever the reason. Do NOT use Craigslist or give them to anyone who "claims" to be some kind of sanctuary that isn't legitimate. There are some mighty bad things and lives of little ones being lost this past year. Like I said. Safe, and smart.)

My son and I went into Angel Paws looking to adopt a pair of cats and wound up falling for two very sweet siblings who had been at their shelter for about a month. I filled out forms to adopt both of them and when I didn't hear back, returned 3 days later to visit the cats and check on our application. That night, finally , a volunteer called me and we spoke for about 20 minutes, going over the usual stuff, checking to see if I would declaw them, if cats are allowed where I live, what I'd feed them, my experience with animals, etc. and I explained that I've lived with cats all my life have a beautiful pet friendly home they could visit, and would gladly pay the $250 adoption fee for which they asked. I was told I'd hear back the next day as to when I could pick up the cats. A few more days passed, so I visited the cats again and checked on the application. This happened twice and then finally, 8 days after I filled out the initial forms, I received a brief email saying my application, "unfortunately" had been rejected. Don't waste your time here. Angel Paws is run by a crazy cat lady who thinks that no one other than she is qualified to take care of the cats and wants to keep them all for herself. I've raised cats my entire life and I'm unqualified to adopt two of theirs??? It's a shame, since a lot of good people volunteer there. I spoke to a number of them after this happened who told me my experience had been typical, stay away.

There will be "breeders" listed for each puppy there but the "breeders" are just fronts for puppy mills. I attached a label for example. Just look at how many of these reviews are from serious health issues. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. THESE PUPPIES DESERVE BETTER. My heart breaks for the sweet puppy I met. Just look up an article about a lawsuit from this year titled, "Attorney General James Wins $300,000 for Customers of Long Island Pet Store That Illegally Sold Sick Puppies" about another Shake a Paw which also lied about the sources of their puppies. Disgusting. Owners of all the sick puppies previously sold here should come together for a lawsuit.
