We first sought to adopt a bonded pair of dogs and upon our meet and greet, our senior dog seemed indifferent, but the pair seemed agitated. I thought that this possibly would pass, but Liz really observed the meeting and said she didn't think it would be a good fit. While I was sad about it at that moment, I knew in my gut she was right. Liz is there for the animals and is very dedicated - even on our town's facebook group for dogs. I eventually adopted a kitten (Diana Ross) and she matched our personalities perfectly. Unfortunately, one of my cats unexpectedly passed away around the time the litter was getting fixed and she let me meet love bug Smokey Robinson where I immediately fell in love. We let him heal and my house to calm down before she brought him over and we immediately bonded, another perfect match and it was great to keep a brother and sister together (for better or worse because they are crazy now). You can tell seconds within meeting these two that their love for animals is immense and they are willing to do so much for them. They provide the best care and only have the animal's beat intentions in mind. It's not about the adopter, it's more about the adoptee as it should be. She referred someone to help us trap a feral cat in our neighborhood that just had 6 kittens and then took all seven of them into the shelter for spay/neutering and care. All the kittens were adopted and mama was returned to our neighborhood under our care. We were able to visit our feline family while they were cared for at the shelter. The shelter is clean and bright on the inside where the animals are kept and the staff and volunteers are wonderful in how they interact with all of the animals. They also have someone who works with the larger dogs on behavior and commands to improve their chances of adoption. When the time comes for us to adopt another dog (we prefer large breeds), the Wayne Animal Shelter will be our first stop.

A classic case of people claiming to care about animals but not doing what's necessary to care for…read morethem. My biggest problem is that you can never see the animals available for adoption without going in person... their in person hours are almost comically limited especially for anyone who works regular 9-5 hours. They are not on Petfinder. Their website says to look on Facebook for adoptable animals. But their Facebook page does not have any sort of aggregated list of adoptable animals... you have to sift through dozens of posts of the head of the shelter's PERSONAL DOGS to find any posts about any animal available for adoption. Absolutely ridiculous. The posts are only sometimes updated when the pet is adopted. I've also been told that their adoption fee typically does not include a spay/neuter or voucher. Really???? How incredibly irresponsible. They also do not have the appropriate resources to vet their animals. They do not even keep subcutaneous fluids or basic dewormers/antibiotics on hand... if you've ever worked in rescue, you know how insane and ridiculous that is. No wonder the fee is so inflated if every little thing sends an animal to the vet's office??? They are not knowledgeable about cat health specifically. I have heard on multiple occasions the HEAD of this shelter refer to a SNAP test as being for FIV & FIP. Seriously?? They also routinely take kittens away from their mom, claim they "can't trap mom", and try to find someone to bottle feed... everyone knows that removing kittens from mom is a last resort at best as their survival rate goes way down as bottle babies. Speaking of which... they advise that you can feed PUPPY FORMULA to a small kitten... a BASIC Google search will confirm that this is NOT true & should be intuitive considering the vast differences between the diets & digestive systems of cats & dogs. They're VERY dog focused and do not provide appropriate care to their cats. Also, they lie. I was once told that someone is there all the time, then I was told that no one is there after 3pm. What?? How do you leave animals in cages from 3pm until the next morning???? Their response was they have cameras to see if any of the animals are in distress. The head of this shelter also drives a luxury car and claims that she works at the shelter 7 days a week. I don't understand how someone working full time in rescue could afford such things. What a disappointment. Don't give them your money- adopt from a local RESCUE group instead where they actually properly care for their animals & will NEVER send a pet out without fully vetting them.

I'm a former in shelter volunteer turned foster (at least for now) for AMA. They have the sweetest…read morecats/kittens that I've dealt with in a long time, besides my own adopted cat. AMA works strictly with sick, abused, and neglected cats and dogs (although I'm completely a cat person), which is more up my alley than working with perfectly healthy animals (my cat is special needs - he's three legged, so that's how I got into working with sick/special needs animals). I've been with AMA for about six months now, and while I wish I had discovered this rescue first, I unfortunately came across Animal Haven first (AMA all the way - AMA is much cleaner and nicer than Animal Haven). AMA is my favorite Brooklyn shelter, and I know people who have adopted from or volunteer/work at other Brooklyn shelters and have somewhat of an attitude when it should be about the animals in need and not about one's ego. Yeah the adoption fees here at AMA are mandatory (unlike the ASPCA where I also foster - they have voluntary adoption fees based on what you can afford; nothing is required besides being a good quality adopter in the eyes of the adoption team there) and higher than you'll see elsewhere, but the animals are genuinely cared for and loved here. The adoption fees aren't the highest in the NYC area for cats and dogs, but they're higher than most other shelters that I know of. It's hard to not get attached to some of the animals there, and I can name a handful of cats that I've grown attached to since the end of March when I came into the shelter for my first shift: Chewy, Spring, Autumn, Tiny, Puff, Kiki, Sushi, Chili, Maple, and my foster, Muffin. It's hard watching them get adopted, but it's also super exciting to see them find where they belong. Here are some final words - if you like cleaning, socializing, meeting new people in person, having some form of structure to your week, and getting out of the house, then you should volunteer in person at the shelter. If working with too many animals at once is overwhelming to you but you still want to help out, consider fostering - AMA covers 100% of costs (including vet visits which any animal lover knows can get expensive), and Mariya is always available to talk to if you need help.

We decided to foster Alfafa over the holidays to potentially adopt if he was a good fit for the household. It's very clear from my interactions with them that they value every animal dearly and take the extra effort to make sure every potential adopter/foster is the best fit possible. Their application is thorough, they take their time to make sure there's a good match, and it was clear the cats were well taken care of at the shelter. I highly highly recommend anyone considering to adopt or foster to work with AMA, I can't overstate how much respect I have for their work, mission, and the people there.
