I would almost move to Truckee to go to this church! (Well, almost. I don't like snow or cold, so…read morethat would be one downside.) What a pleasant surprise! We were staying across the street, so early Sunday morning I jogged across to visit. The people here were all incredibly welcoming and friendly. They even insisted I have a free cappuccino from their little coffee shop. The music director gave me a little tour around the facility, answering all of my questions, and generally just being a very nice person. He did a fantastic job leading the hymns today. It looked me like everyone in the church was singing along! The minister, Jesse, is quite an accomplished speaker. It was a challenging, yet informative message this morning. His sermon was on the Book of Ruth. This Sunday was hymn Sunday, in which they sang traditional hymns. Wow--they were all my favorites! A wonderful Fellowship full of friendly people. I cannot say enough good things about this church.

Our pastors…read moreare wonderful teachers as well as providing good servant leadership, being an example for living a life surrendered to Christ. Our elders are also good models of godly living. Pastors and elders are warm and accessible. The diversity in our church is socio-economic and political. Our leadership has done a great job of keeping us focused on Jesus and using scripture to help us love one another when we can have such different opinions about how to live in the world. I am most impressed with the number of people in our church who do service, both at church and in the community. Volunteers provide vibrant programs for our youth and Sunday School, keep our church clean, greet both newcomers and church family, make sure there are coffee, drinks, and snacks available. We have more than enough volunteers when we do small groups who open their homes and others who facilitate. There are couples mentoring younger couples and women mentoring women. There is a prayer chain as well as text messages that go out so we know when people within our church and our community need prayer and assistance. There are ongoing men's groups. Yearly events include Family Camp in the summer and Bread and Soup the Sunday before Thanksgiving. The music provided by the worship team is contemporary and relevant and helps to open our hearts and spirits to glorify our King (it's not a too loud, and not a show) Come join us. It wasn't until I looked further into the detail that I learned how beautiful and full of symbolism it is. It's no surprise their website states, "St. Rose of Lima Church is meant to be beautiful but simple, elegant without obstentation." I think they capture that description perfectly and it's growing on me. I attended Sunday Mass at 8:30 a.m. Wonderful service and the Choir sang beautifully!

They have a vibrant music program with a fully engaged choir using non-traditional, modern instruments like drums and guitars and such. While that's not my kind of thing, many parishioners do like it. I've attended most recently for Easter Sunday mass. The priest appeared to be Philippino and did a very nice job saying mass alongside a capable Deacon. I believe the Pastor is a priest with Indian decent. In the past masses that I have attended with him as the celebrant, I have a difficult time understanding him due to a thick accent. I understand that in the past they have a monthly pancake breakfast for $5 and it sounds well received. Overall, I do recommend this church.

Services are full of the local parishioners as well as Catholic visitors from around the world. Masses are easy to follow along. Priests and all administration are easy to reach. Bulletins available online Holy day masses (Christmas, Easter, Good Friday etc) fill quickly so arrive a bit early. Also, on snow days, the parking lot may not be plowed. Make sure mass is being held if there is/was a heavy storm.

What began as a positive and welcoming experience ultimately revealed deeply troubling patterns…read morethat cannot be ignored. I felt compelled to pray and ask God for discernment, and over time, it became clear that the environment within this church lacked genuine love, humility, and integrity. There was a strong culture of outward judgment. Individuals--especially young people--were scrutinized based on their appearance, such as whether they wore formal attire like dresses or suits. This created an atmosphere of exclusion rather than acceptance, despite claims of welcoming all as they are. More concerning was the treatment of new believers. When I brought younger individuals to participate, they were pressured to conform immediately or made to feel unwelcome. During evangelism efforts, reports surfaced of aggressive and inappropriate behavior--yelling at people and attempting to force conversion rather than ing them with compassion. Unsurprisingly, this drove many away. Leadership practices raised serious red flags. Members were judged harshly for circumstances such as work schedules, and when concerns were brought to leadership, they were dismissed. In one instance, a young individual was explicitly told they were no longer welcome--directly contradicting the church's own message about forgiveness and open arms. There also appeared to be an unhealthy level of control over members' personal lives. Individuals were required to seek permission for basic activities such as dating or even participating in outreach. Young people were encouraged to join ministry roles regardless of their personal calling, often framed around financial benefit rather than spiritual growth. Financial pressure was persistent and troubling. Offerings were not presented as voluntary acts of faith, but rather as obligations tied to acceptance and participation. There was a clear emphasis on expansion and building projects, while little effort was made to genuinely support or uplift the community. Even more alarming were teachings that encouraged inauthentic behavior, such as instructing individuals to mimic speaking in tongues rather than fostering genuine spiritual experiences. This undermines the very foundation of honesty and faith. Over time, it became evident that vulnerabilities were often exploited to enforce compliance and obedience. Those who questioned or left were labeled negatively, rather than being treated with understanding. Based on these experiences, I strongly caution others to approach this environment with discernment. A true place of worship should reflect love, grace, and truth--not control, pressure, and judgment. There are many churches that genuinely prioritize faith, community, and a personal relationship with God without imposing fear or manipulation.

Choir was about 20 people, almost outnumbered the congregation, sang well and had nice red and gold robes. But sorry, the rest of it did not inspire me to worship God. It reminded me of the boring stale services I attended with my parents as a child. Just my honest opinion, no offense, but not going back.

They have a primary school attached as well. The music ministry is smaller than most churches but is very good quality. Did I mention the people are really nice? Parking can be a bit of a walk when the masses are packed.
