Came here specifically for Cary Gitter's interview/ chat with Amy Feltman about Cary Gitter's debut novel. I really like the layout of the shop, the way the books are displayed, the diverse offerings of holiday books for children, and the way they fit the folding chairs to attend the author event. This is the charming neighborhood bookshop everyone wishes were around the corner from their house. My advantage is that it's pretty much across the street from my place. #nerdwin! I love this cozy bookstore. It's very clean, feels homey, the staff is friendly and helpful, and they even let me take a picture there for meme day (Will post in pic below). They have a wide selection of titles even though it's not huge, and they also have an excellent gift section with funny journals, puzzles, and cute handmade cards and bookmarks. Astoria Bookshop is tucked away off the main drag and that only makes it more perfect. The shop is loaded with current best sellers, kids books & cute notebooks, bookmarks and cards. They even had some signed copies of books that were great to see. The ladies were so friendly and sweet. I had my dog with me and they were so excited to see her and offered her treats and pets. Strong but not exclusive feminist bent, and extensive selections on local history and social issues. A serious bookstore for serious readers, with a lot of fun added in. Staff are friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable. They have a discount program for frequent buyers. I always buy too much there, and always find things I didn't know I was looking for! Prices are mostly cover price, with some discounts, but the selection and warm atmosphere make it all right. I absolutely love this bookshop. I love visiting Astoria bookshop. My child and I go often on our way home from school especially since it's right next to UP (Under pressure cafe). It's full of children's books and great books representing multicultural perspectives and also has a variety of Dav Pilkey books which keeps us returning back for more cat kid comic books. I personally like the self improvement, self help, and parenting genre, but I see comedy, drama, and biographies. And if you don't see something you like, they order it for you to pick it up and they'll contact you when it's ready. It's a great bookstore, and I highly recommend you come by and check it out. They also have a feminist book group on Saturdays or so I have heard. I can't wait to go to some in person events here. I'm excited! Love this bookstore! I am a huge fan of books and bookstores and was really happy to see this well-curated local store in the neighborhood. It reminded me of Book Culture on the UWS before it closed (I just moved from the UWS to Astoria recently). I was impressed by its great selection of books by POCs and others alike. The selection is compact and very well chosen. It also has "a blind date with a book" where the books are wrapped up and a mystery until opened, but you can take them with a suggested cash donation of $5 that goes to charity, rather than to the bookstore (like I saw with Book Culture). They have a rewards program where for every $100 you spend, you get $5 to spend on books. All the staff are very nice. I will definitely be frequenting this store. read more

Called them early in the afternoon just after opening and asked about a book I have been trying to get my hands on for almost a year now. Not a single library I've called has it available, there are countless claims of book fakes being sold online (ik, what a time we live in now) and lots of falsely advertised inventory from stores. It said they had 1 left on the site available in store. I called to be sure as the aforementioned has left me a little hopeless in obtaining this book. Lol. To my surprise they told me that they did have it in stock and offered to hold it for me until the end of the day, I didn't even have to ask! I walked in, the book awaited me, and I made my purchase. Such a easy transaction and lovely staff. This was my first experience at ABS and I will definitely be coming back. I wish I got the staff members name who assisted me on the phone so I can shout them out - I broke my hand two days ago and have been in a horrible mood. I love this bookstore. It's so near and dear to my heart because it represents that warm, cozy feeling you get when you come home after a long day at work. Astoria was my first neighborhood when I moved to the city and this bookstore was often a place I would walk into on my walk back home. I loved the close knit neighborhood feel. The intimate atmosphere just does it for me. It's small, yet carries every book I've ever needed. They have weekly book clubs, support businesses and the staff is super friendly. How unfortunate that this is the last remaining bookstore in Queens, but thank goodness they exist! Astoria Bookshop is the perfect example of a neighborhood bookstore - the kind you grew up with. The decor is inviting and cozy, and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. You can go and discuss books or just browse for a while. It's not a large space, but that's alright because you just know that you will get great recommendations and you can bring your kid here for their little children's section in the back. They have a decent variety of genres and a great selection of books. They also host some interesting events. The location isn't the most convenient to get to, but it is worth it. They are a huge supporter of bringing small bookstores back, even if it means it is their competition. I love that sense of camaraderie and really want them to be a staple in the neighborhood for many decades to come. This is the kind of store we need to have more of. I was so excited and hopeful when I heard Astoria was getting a bookstore and this place did NOT disappoint! We stopped in right after it opened just to browse. Although the shop is obviously smaller than box chains, I love that about it. Rather than being inundated with every possible option, you are offered the very best of a carefully curated selection of titles. They have several genres, including history, travel, cooking, gardening, parenting, and I saw some cool feminist-type books. Good young adult and children's section in the back. My wife really wanted the new Neil Gaiman book, but they had already sold out. The super friendly owner apologized and asked if she'd like to be notified when the book was re-stocked. They notified her within about 4 days and we went right back to pick it up! Totally love the friendly neighborhood vibe. The owner also mentioned they're toying with a customer loyalty program, which is awesome! They have an online store, which I would absolutely use that for books that aren't in the actual store. Plus they're doing a book club as well as offering cool classes and workshops like mindfulness meditation and memoir writing. I love this shop and can't wait to see what's next! read more

Fantastic independent, women owned book store in the heart of Astoria. This is one of my happy places in the neighborhood. It has an excellent selection of poetry, nonfiction, young adult, and children's books, as well as your standard fiction fare. I especially love the owners, their membership program, and the fact that they will track down ANY obscure book that you fancy and order for you (in my case, some dog training manuals). Speaking of which, they are super duper dog friendly, and not pushy or stuffy at all. You can browse or buy at your leisure. I love that at long last Astoria has a bookshop again, and one that has oodles of community events going on all the time -- such as the Newtown Literary reading I went to last night and read a short story excerpt. It has that beautiful new bookstore smell, and it's great to see all the immaculate volumes on the shelves. It didn't occur to me until I visited this store how most bookstores -- even those that sell only new books -- have books showing signs of age with creases on the spine. Not so at this place. Like another reviewer wrote, the selection is on the small side but well curated. My only real complaint is that the temperature and airflow have been on the warm and stuffy side both times I have visited. But that minor concern won't stop me from popping in every now and then to pick up some new reads from the comfort of my home borough. read more

Awesome bookstore that is so charming. When you walk in it really feels magical - it feels like one could literally stay there forever, with so many interesting titles. I love that they handwrite personal descriptions for many books. The staff are very courteous but will usually leave you in peace unless you ask for help - I actually prefer that and think it's an intentional choice. One reviewer said the staff don't say hi - I'm sure they've said hi to me before but the staff definitely try to let you absorb the peacefulness of a bookstore on your own. In terms of prices - sure you will likely find cheaper prices on some books online, but if you're going to buy a book, why not buy from a neighborhood store that's curated and where you can touch & feel what you're buying?
