I really love this gorgeous iconic bridge. Normally driving over Bridges is not my favorite but the part of this bridge (when you are leaving Oregon and headed into Washington) is lovely. From the calming color of the steel, to the image of strength, to the incredible views of the water, I am absolutely captivated. I don't care as much for the second part where you are more closer and more parallel to the water, but it definitely gets the job done. I know it's record-breakingly long, but the first section makes me forget that. Plus it gives me flashbacks from some of my favorite 80's movies! This bridge is iconic, nostalgic, tried and true. Visiting the Astoria-Megler Bridge in the pouring rain wasn't exactly planned but honestly, it ended up being one of the most memorable stops along the Oregon Coast that day. The bridge itself is absolutely stunning! Long, dramatic, and stretching across the Columbia River and disappearing into the fog of the storm. There's something special about seeing this iconic landmark in this moody and stormy atmosphere and watching as huge cargo ships being dwarfed by the size of the bridge as they steam off to their destinations. Super cool bridge. Im glad the day we crossed the bridge it was calm unlike the day before with gale force winds blowing like mad. That wouldn't have been great. No, the day we crossed into Washington State, it was sunny and beautiful. The views all the way across were spectacular. My Wife drove so it especially nice for me to sit back and take it all in. This is the way to drive from the state of Washington to Oregon. And you have to do it before the fog burns off in the afternoon. As you're heading to the Astoria-Megler Bridge from the Washington side, you come around a turn and you see the bridge. Well, you only see half the bridge when there is fog. And we had fog, so you get to see cars just disappear into the fog or coming out of it and it's like a scene out of a movie. It was so cool. Driving across, all you see are clouds, not the water at all. It was surreal. We drove across in the morning and halfway across we drove right into the fog and was birthed on the other side in Oregon. As you come out of it, there is almost a tight winding curve that is at a massive downward angle as you're so high above the town of Astoria when you cross the bridge. And it's a very tight end as you swoop to the end of the bridge with a stoplight and you need to know if you're making a left or right immediately. The main strip is lined with businesses, so it's easy to turn around in a parking area. But man, so cool. It's totally worth the drive to the bridge. read more

Oh, ubiquitous aquamarine sentinel, peeking out from every corner of the city, ferrying passengers across a deceptively violent river, and uniting Oregon and Washington, how magnificent you are! My ode to the ever-present guardian of Astoria!! A feat of engineering - this bridge is the longest truss bridge in North America! If you've ever watched Kindergarten Cop, Short Circuit, or The Goonies, you've likely seen this lovely bridge. And if you're exploring Astoria, you can't miss it - it's everywhere from all angles lol. It makes for a great backdrop along Astoria's Riverwalk trail. It's just over 4 miles long and connects Oregon to Washington. Going over it can be a small thrill bc of how high and steep it is! And the views from it and of it can't be beat! It was opened in 1966 - prior to that you had to take a ferry which took ages and always shut down in bad weather. This part of the river can be particularly dangerous - one of the most dangerous crossings in the world! So this bridge was a great solution. I highly recommend walking the Riverwalk trail at sunset - the bridge can be especially beautiful in that light and towards the end there's a two story viewing platform. read more

What an incredible bridge! It's like a long stretch of 2-lane road & a bit of roller coaster put together. I will admit, driving this bridge makes me more than a little nervous given the height of the tall part & how quick the incline (or descent, depending on which direction you're going) is. I used to drive the San Diego Coronado bridge every day to & from work when I was in the Navy, and that never bothered me, but this bridge has me gripping the steering wheel. But, I've only driven it twice, so I'm sure it's not so daunting to the locals. If you're a passenger crossing this bridge & someone else is driving you can check out some great views along the way. read more

Impressive bridge We had a good view of the bridge when we visited the Astoria Column. After spending some time atop the observation deck of the Column we drove on the bridge and crossed all 4.1 miles of it to reach Washington. This was our first time crossing this bridge from Washington to Oregon from Astoria. The bridge is impressive with beautiful views. It actually dominates the town in most viewing areas and unlike our bridges in California there are no tolls on the bridge. Yay! If you're in Astoria you won't miss it. It looked big from a distance but I didn't realize the size and scope of it and is even more massive as we drove over it. Cruise ships, cargo ships and smaller craft pass under it. It was somewhat foggy that weekend when we drove over it but still had nice views on either side. We didn't stay long in Washington... we just wanted to cross the Columbia River in this bridge. LoL! Used to be the only way to cross the mouth of the Columbia was via the ferry. Slow and expensive. So happy to see them build this bridge which is even better now that they have taken down the tool booths. This is where Lewis and Clark crossed (in canoes... yikes!) when they escaped the horrible Winter stuck at Dismal Nitch. Being able to quickly and safety cross the river these days causes most folks to not appreciate how difficult the crossing was in years past. Great views driving across it. You can see the Astoria Column among other things. Every now and then some knucklehead will attempt to drive their beater car across the bridge, break down and totally screw up traffic for hours. And it's a looooooong way around if a bridge crossing is not possible. So five stars for building the bridge and keeping it well maintained! read more

Loved this huge bridge! Saw some turtles while we were going over it and also sea lions. You also get a real good idea of just how massive the columbia river is. WOW! Oh yeah, I crossed this bridge recently and it was the best experience ever. Normally when bridges are on Yelp they get a rough three stars or less but this one is the only exception that I probably make in my entire life. For me I am a huge bridge freak and wanted a change of pace from the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges because those are the only ones that people ever know. This is the second time I crossed the AMB and it's oddly satisfying. Astoria is a small town that feels very welcoming while Chinook, WA is a very good quiet little marina and camp ground. If you come here at night it's really gorgeous too because you can see a lot of lights from both ends of the span. The crossing is bigger than the bridges you see in California including the Coronado Bridge. read more

4.2 miles of the ingenuity of man and machine! Even if you have to make a detour, the Astoria-Megler Bridge is a must if you are in the area. I have seen it twice and am in awe each time. A truss bridge that links Oregon and Washington together. Its a super long bridge with awesome view on both sides. First time crossing it back couple years ago, I was like woah to my surprise. Well I think I have crossed this bridge at least 5 times or more. I like travelling the coast. It's beautiful and I prefer taking highway 101 and crossing this bridge. There are more to see. Great view of both side of the Columbia river. If you want a view that capture the whole bridge go up to where the Astoria Column are located. Humans built this long expanse that thousands and thousands of people drive over every minute of every day and don't pay attention to the amazing construction and display of workmanship. While traveling to Oregon a friend of mine from overseas wanted to go over this bridge so we made the trip. It is only a two lane bridge but it is about 4 miles long. I think the narrow width of the bridge gives an added experience to the crossing. The cantilever-span section, is closest to the Oregon side so you can get some good pictures of it from right below it in Astoria. I recommend taking pictures from the Oregon side verses the Washington side. There is also much more to see and do in Astoria. The bridge itself has a somewhat unique look from many of the bridges we have back east and overseas so it is worth a closer look from the land. There are some great shots from the bridge as well but I was driving so I didn't take any at the time. The Astoria-Megler Bridge will have it's fiftieth anniversary in August of 2016. It does not look that old but the narrow width of it gives its age away. I have been on this bridge when it was stormy and the wind can really blow here at times. But don't worry, the bridge can withstand winds of up to about 150 miles an hour. It is also a quick drive across so even if the wind is blowing you wont be on it for very long. read more

The Astoria-Megler Bridge is the longest continuous truss bridge in North America. It was said when it was built as "the bridge to no where." Though it did take us to Cape Disappointment and to Fort Columbia. I personally think it's just a gorgeous bridge. At first I thought boy that bridge sure stands out. Well it's painted avocado green. The bridge was literally right next to the hotel we were staying at. What a wonderful view at night. There isn't much traffic going over in the evenings let alone at night. It's a cute little bridge with one lane traffic on each side. I know I'm a dork but I like bridges. It's got a cool onramp from Astoria side. It curves counter-clockwise for 360 degrees for a 200 foot climb to the bridge. read more

Bridges, bridges.. they are everywhere here in Oregon. Each once is special in its own way. This one connects Washington and Oregon. Two lanes wide on the Oregon side then narrows down to one lane wide as you seem to glide right above the water. Lots of good photo ops for passengers. One thing I did notice was there was a lot of trash on the shoulder. Come on people. Really, throwing your trash out while driving over a bridge? Not cool at all. There is a camera on the Oregon side of the bridge that you can look up online to check out traffic/weather conditions. read more

Great engineering marvel. It's also free. Goes up pretty high too, save your brakes on the way down and use some engine braking. The entrance to the bridge is sort of West of the bridge opening. Follow the signs, don't spend too much time staring at the bridge! On the Washington side of the river to the West of the bridge is a one-lane road each way without a turnout point where you can stop and take pictures. Looks great in the sunset. read more

This bridge connects Washington and Oregon and it looks like a green dragon in the water from afar. It was really cool to drive through it and the view was beautiful. No traffic or slow down when I went through it over the summer. I wish you can walk this bridge but I didn't see a pedestrian path. read more

A monumental feat of engineering.... the Columbia features many bridges and dams connecting Oregon and Washington, and the most magnificent of them all is saved for last, before you find yourself crossing the bar into glorious halibut and tuna hunting 'grounds'----- er, that is, if you happen to have a boat! One point for you if you traverse oh so mundanely by land, two if by sea 'n' sh*t.... Traveling across this expanse reminds me of the articulating bridge/highway connecting the Florida Keys, all the way out to the tip @ Fort Zachariah... except of course, the weather is usually much much nicer in the keys. Excepting the whole hurricane season "thing"of course...... It's impossible for me to even think of this bridge, let alone cross it, w/o being overwhelmed w/the need to do some sturgeon fishing..... and there you'll find some of the best in the whole world... read more

Beautiful to look at. So fun to drive over. Really scary to be a passenger driving over. Undergoing a little construction, so short delays and added fear factor, if like me, you want to psych yourself out that it might be broken somewhere. My boyfriend did not get it at first: it's a bridge, big deal. He changed his mind, and was stopping to photograph it before we left town, despite construction. Even if you don't need to get to the other side, DO IT. The gulls follow you along the side rails, catching little updrafts. It's kind of magical. And like one person said - It's green! ( Scottish accent implied) And by the way, Ilwaco, WA has the best fried oysters I have ever had at Olé Bob's and the Time Enough bookstore was totally worth a stop, so DO IT. read more

This was the nicest continuous truss bridge I've experienced in a long time. The appetizer was modest: a northern flat section coming down from the Washington side. But while I was enjoying the starter I was distracted by the sight of the entree coming up, which was a gorgeous arch over the Columbia. When the main course finally arrived, it did not disappoint, providing sweeping views of two states and the Pacific Ocean. Dessert was short and sweet, being a smooth section curving over the town that "The Goonies" was set in. This is not a five-star bridge, however. For example, service was spotty, and there's an elitist (and possibly illegal) sign at the entrance stating that pedestrians aren't welcome. Pedestrians have to walk about 60 miles up the river to the Lewis and Clark bridge before finding a place to cross-- it's about time that this under-served segment of society be allowed to cross the Columbia wherever and whenever they like. read more

I don't know what it is about bridges that I love so much, but there's something about a really neat looking one that gets me all worked up. Every time I'm in Astoria I drive across this bridge, even though I have absolutely no reason to. It's just so much fun. And kind of scary, too! Before this bridge was built, Astoria residents referred to it as "the bridge to nowhere" because they saw no need for it. Those living across the river, in "nowhere" were quite upset about it. But to be fair, there's isn't all that much across the way... except the entire state of Washington. Oh! But you can stop by Dismal Nitch, a little known about Lewis and Clark stopping point on the Washington side of the Columbia. Did you know their party was trapped here for several days in really bad weather, and they were so irritated they named it 'Dismal Nitch'? Interesting! read more
