Astound engages in deceptive advertising. I was quoted one price and called to get it corrected and they didn't honor the price. I was quoted a price of $177 and when I called customer service they said price was $208. In addition, they didn't believe me as the customer even though I have a receipt of the amount. Customer Service said we see $0 dollars in our system since you haven't received your bill. How can Astound expect people to accept a service without a quote. I was quoted 4 free cable boxes and remotes and that wasn't honored. Overall, the worst experience ever and happy I am not going to be a customer. Clearly, they don't care about the customer and don't know how to provide sales quotes. Don't believe their sales since they will charge you a separate price. Be aware, you are not locked in for 5 years on the price. That is only internet, so be prepared for large increases. DONT TRUST ASTOUND SALES OR CUSTOMER SERVICE. I would give 0 stars if possible. My bill went up $40.00 from $82 to $122 which is a bummer (~35%). I'm only 4 days into the new billing period and I still have to pay the whole bill of $122 because "we do not pro-rate the bills"? This is a complete rip off, 4 days of Internet that was not so great anyway for $122, besides the $1 you charge every month because I pay my bill online which means over the years I have paid you an additional $240. I mean really?? I had RCN services for about 20 years and am very disappointed about your business practices. No wonder people complain about RCN all the time. I'll be sure to tell all my friends, workmates, family members and my church members to stay far away from RCN. You just lost your business to Verizon. read more

a total rip-off. bait and switch plan initially fixed at $60/month. gradually increased to $90/month. got a notice it was going to $190. i immediately cancelled and returned the router. i was informed that cancelling after the first day, when i received my notice, was too late to avoid the $190. no prorated charges. cancelling after day 1 (on day 2), allowed them to take my autopay for an extra 30 days. a pack of thieves! don't do business with astound/rcn or regret it! read more

So far so good so good. I'm writing this review based on our September 1st mayhem. I just moved to Somerville, MA 2 months ago and It's my first time using RCN. I ordered our internet service about a week before we had to move in and they were able to come the day of us moving and were able to set up. Fast forward to September 1st. I had to say this specific day because it's the biggest moving day of the year and everything gets hectic. My husband and I were out for the day and when we got home we noticed our internet wasn't loading. I kept getting a prompt when I typed in google saying something the lines of "this line is not secure. This can be used to get a hold of your finanical info and logins" which was weird and then when I would reload the page then Xfinity would come up. Apparently someone moved in and Xfinity hijacked our cable line. We called customer service and spoke to Kaitlyn who tried to help as much as she could but a technician wasn't able to come in until Sept 4th. So that would be 3 and a half days without internet which all of our devices use since we don't have cable. We also spoke to Larry who was a supervisor to see what could be done about the situation because I work remotely from home. I'd understand if we just moved in this would have been more okay but we're current customers not new ones that just moved in on Sept 1st. Larry was able to bump up a technician to the 3rd which was more manageable. After we got off the call Kaitlyn called back not too long after to say she could get a technician to come by on the 2nd which was Labor Day. The technician, Michael, came around 10:30/11 which was within the 9am-1pm slot that we selected. We have 2 cable outlets in the apartment and xfinity somehow took over both and our building shares a basement with 17 other units stretched out. It took him a while to figure out how to get back service back to our apartment because there were lines strung everywhere outside and inside of the complex but he finally got it back! This is one of the worst internet providers I have had, INCLUDING Comcast. I was vastly overcharged from what I signed up for. I was told I would be paying $60 for my internet package and $15 for the router per month. What actually was charged was $105 for internet, $15 for the router, and $15 for "wifi service"! When I called RCN to explain this, customer service was very rude and spoke in a very condescending way as though I could not understand basic math. And in the end, the charges were not corrected to what I signed up for. I am switching to Starry, which is a mere $30 per month instead! And their service is much less rude when you have a problem! I would stay FAR away from RCN. The amount of hidden charges and fees even for the basic installation was ridiculous. For example, an extra $10 was charged for "fees" -- and no one at RCN could explain to me what those "FEES" were! The people you speak to when starting service are actively dishonest about the amount that you will have to pay. If you go with RCN, I recommend keeping a close eye on all your bills, and being prepared to dispute dishonest charges with them month-by-month! read more

When it was RCN, it had its problems, including raising cost almost every month, but reliably provided service, esp in-home. Once Astound took over, the whole scene fell hellishly apart. Despite the ability to record more than one program at a time, every other aspect is worse than imaginable and I'm about to say good-bye despite the huge problems that's going to cause my spouse (who suffers both physical and mental issues). I have had THE WORST time even getting in touch with anyone to deal with a technical problem, and despite online promises, I'm still waiting. It's hard even to find a phone number for tech support, and when you try to answer each question "to get you to the right place," you inevitably end up with silence. Eventually you can find a pseudo-himan "support person" on line, but if it's an AI support "person" I've been dealing with, it's the stupidest version imaginable. You will never ever get to speak to a human in tech support. I finally "talked" with the chatbot (it gives itself a different female name each time, but I'm not fooled -- the answers are 100% robot-speak), and was put on "escalated" status for realtime talk to someone in service. Three days later I went back to the website and got to talk to another chat-robot (with different name), and it/she said I had never been put on escalated status but would be now. That's 6 days since I originally asked for assistance. I can think of no other provider of any service who has ever made it so impossible to get help and fix something. And they now cost more than any other of our "utilities" raising the bill almost every month. I feel like an idiot not having gone with anyone else long since. STAY AWAY FROM THEM IF YOU VALUE YOUR MONEY AND SANITY!! And assume this was actually a zero-star review. read more

RCN was great for the first year. After that, they started lying to me about my rates. I was being mailed promotional postcards approximately 3 times per week informing me that there was a $29.99 rate available, and asked RCN to either charge me that rate indefinitely or stop sending the postcards. RCN told me they could not stop sending the postcards, so they would continue to charge me that rate. I was happy with this. Fast forward another year, and RCN tried to raise my rate by $15/month, while not stopping sending the postcards. I repeated this conversation, and they put the rate down to about $32, and confirmed it would be that rate forever, which the extra $2 wasn't worth arguing over. After another 6 months, they raised the rate another $2. Again, this wasn't worth getting annoyed over, but I contacted them and yet again they said it wouldn't change, this was just a new service charge. A few days ago, they raised by rate by another $25. I contacted them and insisted that they charge me the $34.99 rate (now the lowest rate on the postcards I receive). The agent informed me that the $60 rate I was just charged is the lowest rate they have. I'm not interested in dealing with a company that lies to its long-term customers and won't stand by promises it makes about its prices. I'm still receiving postcards multiple times per week, and RCN has refused to stop sending them. I plan to submit a BBB and/or USPS complaint about the junk mail being sent to me which I have contacted the company and asked it be cancelled. I am cancelling my RCN service shortly, and do not plan to resume service with them. read more

I just canceled my Astound internet service after being their (originally, RCN) customer for over 5 years. Main reason: their charge just got way too high. In last two years (2021, 2022) they jacked up their service price by almost 50%. Despite multiple calls to have this addressed and get it back to some reasonable charge, the rate never changed. Also, they kept charging for the router rental. There were also other fees than I never really understood and they added up to make the service unreasonably expensive in comparison to other providers. The actual service wasn't too bad, but with noticeable slowdowns, (had 250 mbps service) more often than I could tolerate. It also had service interruptions that were annoying. The router signal wasn't all that strong - I had to buy signal extender for more complete coverage. If you go with their service, be sure to have some sort of rate guarantee. read more

RCN has been a great ISP until now. My internet in Boston has been out going on 3 weeks now and multiple phone calls with both my landlord and RCN, neither will fix the lines which are on the pole and outside the house before the junction box. From my understanding this is owned by RCN. I help run an internet start up from home and this is hindering my ability to work. I used to tell everyone to drop Comcast and Verizon in the area as I hate those two giant corporations. But now I'm second guessing using RCN and debating on dropping my service after this. read more

This company is a joke. Within one year I had to call multiple times over errors in my bills and going up $15 randomly because of supposedly a tax increase. Then when I went to cancel my plan I was charged a higher amount because the representative told me the wrong cancelation date I was held responsible for another month at a much higher, double what I was originally paying, amount, thy also charged me for a service call that they guaranteed would be free. They did refund me for that but if I haven't constantly been looking at my bill the would have taken so much money from me wrongfully. Never ever ever doing business with them again.
