I came to see Matthias with an AmazonLocal deal, a 60 minute reiki session. I had never really…read moreexperienced reiki before, having only been treated for short bursts during a group yoga/reiki class where the reiki master stepped in between yoga practitioners, hovered hands, or very gently touched us as we did yin yoga. So I told Matthias how new I was to the experience both in email, and then in more detail when we met face to face. We talked a bit about skepticism, and the placebo effect, and the power of the human brain. I'm not going to detail either his or my position on these things here, because I've observed some pretty heated arguments about these matters. However, they were discussed! After talking about philosophy, his background both as a (former) software developer and an energy worker, and a rough idea of what I should expect from a session, Matthias invited me into another room in his (office? condo? not sure...) to start our session. The other room is dim, has a massage table with pretty fabrics draped over it, and was gently scented with a nice incense or scented oils. Nothing too overpowering. During the 60 minute session, I laid on my back and Matthias moved around me. Sometimes he'd ask quiet questions or direct my attention to something. He'd previously asked if light touch was ok, and I'd approved. So sometimes he'd touch my thumb and my shoulder, directing energy along my arm. Or he might touch my third eye with one finger or thumb, while gently directing my attention inward. Once or twice, he asked if I had felt something (probably because his hands were hovering at the time and maybe I had reacted in some way). All in all, I found the experience more intense than I could have imagined. I came out of it at the end feeling very relaxed and well-rested. My mind felt clearer, too. I don't think I'll keep up a reiki practice at the same regularity I do, say, yoga...or even my monthly massage. But I can definitely see myself visiting Matthias again, or trying someone new sometime, a couple times a year. One cool thing was when we were saying goodbye, Matthias said that if I didn't really sync with his energy, he'd be happy to recommend other practitioners. And, that if I had some questions come up later, he'd be happy to reply to my email & we could chat. I really appreciated that extra little bit, because once I'd paid, he had no real need to keep the conversation going! But he did, which is cool. (I haven't actually emailed him yet, I am still figuring out if I want to see him again or try someone new.)
