I've never been to another planet fitness, and this is the first gym I've belonged to in over twenty years, so I can't really compare it to anywhere else. As another reviewer said, it's fine. It's a no frills kind of place, but it is spacious, clean, brightly lit, big variety in equipment, and has friendly staff. You won't find personal trainers, saunas, pools, or a smoothie bar, but it is still a great place to work out. The planet fitness model is to accept everyone. Phrases like "You belong!" are prominent on the walls. So there is a wide variety of ages and body types working out here. This particular planet fitness is in a great location, right in the heart of Westmont. It never gets obnoxiously crowded, and there is ample street parking as well as a lot on the side and out back. I've never had an issue finding a parking space, even when I go during peak hours. What brings it down to 4 stars is that there is almost always something broken or otherwise wrong when I'm there. I'm usually there when it opens at 5am on weekdays. One time the employee just didn't show up to open. Once there was no toilet paper in the men's room. Once every disinfectant spray bottle in the entire gym was empty, almost like the people who closed the night before were playing a prank on the opening staff. There is always something broken, which often takes a long time to be fixed. Sometimes it's one tv, sometimes the whole row, sometimes it's one stair master, once it was all of them. Recently, every shower in the men's locker room was out of order, then they were fixed, and a week later they were all broken again. These are minor annoyances, though, and like I said overall it is a good gym to work out in.

There's a man & woman who run the place (spouses, I believe). Very nice folks who can kick your butt. They ask that you "check your ego at the door" and the environment is welcoming and supportive. They meet you at your level and push to keep you improving. The room is large, with a cool painted wooden slat ceiling, and there is a humongous, cushy mat covering almost the entire floor. (I was told that the building used to be the old, old firehouse/hall). Mentioning the ceiling is worthwhile, as you do spend a bit of time looking at it, after repeatedly landing face-up on the soft mat during a class. I would have continued with my classes, as they were enjoyable; however, I was not comfortable with the whole "everyone's barefoot & we're all rolling around on the mat" thing. I realize that it's necessary for this practice. However, and this is just personal preference on my end, I didn't see anything indicating attention to that detail. Maybe if I knew their mat cleaning schedule and everyone had sparkly-clean feet, I'd be more willing to return. Of note, I do have a highly sensitive sense of smell, and may be bothered by things that others don't even notice. If you can get past the "everyone's sweaty and barefoot" aspect (&, I'm sure most people can), I'd recommend this place. The friendly couple and supportive atmosphere, plus the unique ceiling are worthy of four stars. And, if you're interested in "testing the waters", google Audubon Community Education, as they often team up for low-cost intro classes.

Sensei Sam is friendly and a great teacher, always coming up with creative and funny ways to teach us the art. The school has trained many great black belts and those who come in to teach and train in the advanced classes are all extremely capable martial artists in their own right. The style of Aikido they teach is very practical and there is a definite push to ensure that what we learn is truly effective on the street. One thing I would say to a new visitor though is to be patient! Like any art, it takes time to become competent and effective at Aikido so be prepared to put in the effort needed to master the moves. My first class was free, I wanted to sign up for more immediately after the workout. I don't care how in shape you are - you'll be huffing & puffing here. I found Angela's studio through yelp and contacted her immediately. For me it was great to hear Angela was Polestar qualified, as my teacher in the UK is also Polestar trained! I am currently pregnant so wanted to make sure she was comfortable working with me. She replied shortly after and told me she's been working with someone who is due in the coming weeks. I immediately signed up for a class for the 1st day I was in town. Angela warmly welcomed me to her lovely and clean studio. She grabbed all my details and we got started. I signed up for an equipment class so expected more folks to turn up. However, she said she didn't have a minimum class size so I'd be getting a 1:1! It was a fantastic surprise. I had an amazing session with Angela. She kept me working hard the entire time. It was just what I needed after a long haul flight. I can't wait to get to my next class!
