I've been coming here for over 15 years, and it is such a treat each time. They have an amazing selection of comics snd other novelties. Best Baltimore stickers and gifts, as well. I always try to pop in when I visit Baltimore.

What's not to love about a comic book store that has a bar in the back. It's a divy hipster bar in Hampden. The crowd is a little order and it's cheap drinks and beers with usually a live show. The staff is friendly. I've heard John Waters (creator of Hair Spray) does signings here on occasion! It's a fun spot. They do have regular fiction books as well!

Atomic Books was a definite Baltimore must! I don't need to remind you that John Waters gets his mail here. A perfect stalking.... I meant local hub for all things literature! It was my first time here and I immediately feel for it. It might have helped that we were in the car for hours and I made a b-line for the bar in the back. Yes, you heard me loud and clear. There's beer here. I was quiet happy to see a little couch with Waters and Divine head pillows. And I couldn't resist playing a couple rounds of Ms. PAC-MAN. When my friend showed me how to start it. I was only one point away from the win. The bartender last Saturday was a super sweetie and helped me select the right sour "Sorry Chick" to quench my thirst. It was delicious! She also complemented me on my outfit. It's like she wanted me to move in with all the love I felt. I spotted a cheap book rack and immediately went for the pickle book. I was tempted. There was a family in the back who was also trying to convince me about the book. I should be in a "Cookbooks Anonymous". I admit I have a problem and that's the first step. The array of books had so many of my favorites. I focused a lot on the illustrated comics. Liana Finck's new book "Passing for Human" was in the mix. She's one of my favorite cartoonist for the New Yorker! I also enjoyed the John Waters x-mas card wall. Buscemi one will always be my favorite. There was also signed books of all his novels. A real must see for all fans! You can also pick up your "Baltimore: I actually like it" t shirt for 25 bones, Tip: We didn't know but word on the street is the record store (True Vine Record Shop) next door is amazing and Waters loves this area so spend some time walking around.

    Comics I got!

This was my first visit here. I've been in Baltimore all these years and I finally stopped in. They have a mask policy so I ran back to my car to grab one, just a note to anyone planning to go. I was impressed by their diverse selection of books and comics. I was able to get what I wanted and then some. I was going to rate this review a 5 star but I honestly felt like I was watched the whole time I was in the store. I would move from one side of the store to the next and still notice it. I just ignored it and kept shopping. My wife also noticed it without me mentioning it.

The shop personnel were rude. We stopped in to buy a gift and the staff was unprofessional and unwelcoming.

I ordered a breakfast burrito, and it's been three days since I had it and I'm still craving the taste. Who knew you could make tofu taste so good? I didn't like my vanilla iced coffee as much, but that was my fault because I should have asked for more vanilla flavoring. I really appreciated how much parking there was on a Sunday afternoon, and in my opinion, it's one of the best co working spaces in Baltimore. I would 100% come back to this coffee shop and maybe spend more time browsing the books next time!

You're not going to find everything here, but the sections that are curated are top-notch. I got a few books about abolition and a handful of poetry collections written by locals. This is, in my mind, the best part of the place. There's also a big selection of zines, and the person working told me I could choose some free posters. Then there's the cafe part. All vegan? Sounds amazing! In reality, it's quite expensive and just OK? Like, I've been a vegan for nearly two decades and I've eaten my fair share of vegan food around the world. And the food I got at Red Emma's? I paid $20 ish for a cheeseburger with applewood smoked bacon, and it tasted fine, but it wasn't great. I don't know, I was expecting something more delicious, not something I could have made at home for 1/4 of the price. Maybe it was just that I choose the wrong item, because there are other items on the menu that also looked good. Of course I get that because it's worker owned, prices might be higher. I get it. But it was still disappointing. And the people working were nice but sort of disinterested. Some more good things: They sell Palestinian sodas, which I love. There is an option to prepay for a meal or a drink for someone less fortunate. They open their bathrooms and space to members of the community, which means anyone who is e.g. unhoused can use the space. It seems like the spot is doing a lot for the community, which I admire. A lot of people were there working on their laptops etc., so it seems to be a space people like to hang out and get stuff done. I plan to come back next time I'm in Baltimore to give it another chance, so stay tuned.

I know it's almost 2026 and many newspaper producers have moved on to online media. 7-Eleven has very limited selections for newspapers. So, I did an online search for the closest newsstand and Hamilton News Mart came up. It's directly on Harford road. I've seen it many times as I drove by. It looks like an attractive old school news store...from the outside. I'm thinking that they have changed ownership in the last few years, but I could be wrong. I found a good spot right near the front entrance. As soon as I walked in, I knew something was amiss. Clouded bullet proof glass separated the cashier from the customer. I turned around and saw a completely empty rack near the wall. Not one paper, periodical, NOTHING. No magazines, not ONE. On another rack was some (very) random brochures/pamphlets. It looked like some kind of lottery/keno situation in the back. The whole place just seemed dusty and shady. I looked at the cashier and asked if he had any newspapers. He sheepishly said no. I was so perplexed because...newsstand?! Granted, it was after 4pm, but you can honestly get a newspaper anytime of day. It seemed as if they hadn't carried any at all & for a while. I really do not like giving out 1 star reviews, but I feel like people should know if a place isn't what it says in its name. If I had come here after work on a busy weekday evening, I would've been really upset that I wasted my time. This place is not a news mart. I honestly don't know what it is exactly. They should really think about a name change. Hamilton Keno, maybe.
