Whenever I visited, I was treated warmly, and my father was always resting comfortably in a clean room and a pristine bed, with carefully laundered, comfortable clothes. He had dementia, so he was unable to tell us how the staff was treating him (and never having been the type of person to complain) we had to take non-verbal cues. All the cues pointed to a staff that was both patient and caring. Trust was essential to us and something we considered heavily before deciding on a place for our beloved father. During his final days, our family experienced feelings that I cannot properly put into words here. Likewise, I am unable to express how sensitive the staff was in their treatment of my father. I imagine that they deal with loss on a regular basis, but never once did they regard our grief casually. My father was a kind, gentle, man and was known for his singing voice, his whistling, his love of jazz and his love of the Word. The staff made sure he was able to enjoy all these things during his final days. They all knew him by name, and said he was easy to care for and easy to care about. This was evident in their heartfelt farewell. You can not pay someone to care, and [care] is what they did here. Perhaps I have not adequately relayed, but in my heart I will absolutely, always appreciate every last member of this staff for giving of themselves so selflessly, when it counted most.

They give you a tour so you will fall for how the place looks. All neat and clean and organized but the care they provide is terrible. They will also lie and like causing drama. Their head nurse once called me to complain about my brother feeding our mom by mouth, (due to the strokes, our mom had a tube inserted in her stomach so she can be fed, since she had a hard time swallowing at the beginning), she complained that my brother had been told several times to stop feeding her, (my brother mouth feeds her so she can regain her swallowing ability, a speech therapist at another rehab center had given the permission for her to be mouth fed) so she and i went back and forth arguing because I disagreed, (I told her how is our mom supposed to regain her swallowing ability if she doesn't practice), she replies being a smartass, that if we want to do as we want, that she would be released into our care.. (That's one thing they hate, when you disagree with them), when i got to the center, i told my brother what had happened, he told me they had not told him anything except just one time, and so they lied to me about him being told several times. Another time, my brother decided to take our mom out in a wheelchair to get some fresh air, it was during a week that it was hot for several days, very hot, so they went back in, a nurse saw them come in, and told my brother to get our mom some water, so she would stay hydrated, so they get back to her room, he calls a nurse to request some water, an older nurse came in, asking whom the water was for, my brother said it was for our mom, so she quicky replies that our mom can't have water unless it was on her schedule for the day. Now that is outrageous and ridiculous! My brother tells her that another nurse told him to get some water for our mom, that stupid older nurse tells him well that the other nurse doesn't know how things work around here. So, it was a hot day, and just because it was not on the schedule, my mom was denied water! That says a lot about how terrible that place is! My mom was released with no improvement at all, she is wheelchair bound because their therapists also failed to do their jobs, How is a 15 minute therapy session supposed to help a person regain mobility after suffering 2 strokes? On one occasion, I had just arrived and went to my mom's bedside and could smell some odor coming from her, i called a nurse, she comes in after 15 minutes of waiting, and I tell her that my mom needs to be changed, she replies that she had already changed her, in my head i was like I am not asking if you have changed her, i am requesting that she be changed. I told my brother it's like they think our mom's bowel movements have to go according to their stupid schedule. Another time, i get there and my mom is complaining about pain on her left shoulder, so I call a nurse, she comes in and i ask for a pain pad, she replies, that my mom already got one and can't get another one, with her face not showing any concern so i tell her that my mom needs a pain killer, she leaves to go find another nurse. A few days before our mom is released, my brother decides to go all day to make sure that they are doing their job. On 2 separate dates, he notices that they only feed our mom once in the morning and that's it, she literally waited 6 hours one day to get food again. Our sister arrives on the second occasion and my brother tells her that they have not fed our mom yet, so she calls a nurse to ask her when our mom is going to get food, the nurse dares to ask, are you sure she's not gotten fed yet, my brother tells her he's sure because he's been there all day. I wonder how many times my mom spent a whole day without being fed and could not tell us because she can't speak well. A nurse came to our house to check my mom's vitals and we asked her where we could get more protein to feed our mom, she tells us that the rehab center should have place an order or prescription for that, she checks the paperwork and surely no prescription was ever sent. I have mentioned just some things that i was able to notice and that my brother also saw and noticed. It makes me mad thinking of what my mom had to deal with when she was alone during the day. She can't speak well and can't move, so it was good for them because she could not complain. Please if you love your elderly parents who need a rehab center or nursery home, and plan on visiting this place, please Don't consider this place, they are liars, they don't care for the patients. They will release your parent or parents if they see that your parents are not recovering fast enough on their stupid schedule. They lack communication, patience, understanding and caring. It only took me about a week to see what kind of hell hole this place really is.

Instead of receiving care, I suffered neglect, discrimination, and violence during my time there. One of the most terrifying experiences was being physically attacked by another resident. I was injured, but staff minimized what happened, failed to take my safety seriously, and allowed threats and harassment to continue. The environment felt unsafe every single day, and staff were untrained and unprepared to handle serious issues between residents. I now have lifelong disabilities from the injuries as well from the neglect, and have been hospitalized many times after Newport for my PHYSICAL health. Medical neglect was also a constant problem. My basic needs--including food and proper medical care--were ignored or withheld. I was often left feeling weak, unsafe, and scared. Rather than being a supportive environment, Newport was a place where my physical health declined rapidly. On top of that, I faced discrimination and was pressured not to tell my mom or anybody the truth about what was happening inside the program. The facility's focus seemed to be on control and image, not on genuine healing or support. Families deserve to know the truth: Newport Academy is not a safe or healing environment for teenagers. It worsened my mental health, left me with lasting trauma, and caused severe harm. No child should ever go through what I experienced there.
