However i did get a specialty test run recently, and im not sure if the ordered test targeting what i was in pain for. My experience with the orthopedics department was extremely upsetting and disappointing. I was already anxious about the appointment, and the way I was spoken to by multiple staff members made the experience significantly worse--to the point that I ended up crying. When I arrived, I was told by the woman at the front desk that I needed to go to X-ray. I was confused because I had been told I was getting an MRI, so I simply asked for clarification about why X-rays were needed. Instead of explaining, the staff member repeatedly told me, "You need to go to X-rays," in a very dismissive and condescending manner. She then directed me to the wrong location, which left me even more frazzled. When I returned and explained that I had been sent to the wrong place, she looked at me as though I had said something completely unreasonable and responded again in an unnecessarily condescending tone. Unfortunately, the experience did not improve when I reached the X-ray department. Another woman from the orthopedics office came in and spoke to me very harshly about the fact that my referral was only for one knee, even though I had explained that I was experiencing problems with both knees. She abruptly told me that because the referral was for only one knee, that was the only knee they would address that day. I understand that there may be policies or referral requirements that staff need to follow. My issue was not with the policy--it was with the unnecessarily rude and brash way the information was communicated to me. At that point, I was so upset that I nearly walked out of the appointment altogether. Thankfully, there were a couple of kind and helpful people in the X-ray department who treated me with respect and were essentially the reason I stayed. Overall, I was extremely disappointed by the lack of basic courtesy, empathy, and professionalism I experienced from multiple members of the orthopedics staff. Patients coming into an orthopedic office may already be in pain, nervous, or worried about what is wrong. Asking a reasonable question should not result in being spoken down to or made to feel like a nuisance. I want to make clear that Dr. McCarthy was not part of this negative experience. My concerns are specifically with the interactions I had with other members of the orthopedics staff. I left feeling embarrassed, overwhelmed, and in tears. No patient should be made to feel that way simply for asking questions and trying to understand their care. The customer service and manner in which I was treated were unacceptable, and I sincerely hope this feedback is addressed. read more

This experience has been dehumanizing and I have wasted nearly one month trying to clarify my medical diagnosis and receive information from two different doctors. A mistake was made in ordering X-rays. The wrong knee was X-rayed. I thought the mistake was corrected but it was not. There was no follow-up from the physical therapist who examined me and said he would work with me after the test results came through. My original exam was well over one month ago and I have received no treatment or therapy. I am in considerable physical pain. read more

My routine appts has been canceled day of, forcing me to push the process another month, not once but twice. Please go with a place who specializes in fertility health and knows what they are doing, not one that dictates when works for them and their schedule, for you to have necessary routine appt. I am more then willing to discuss more with anyone interest to know more because i would hate for anyone else to experience and wish i knew before i put my health in their hands. One of the positives about Atrius is its many locations. However, this is analogous to having a large portion of a terrible meal. This is Atrius. While I'm not a high-needs patient and have minimal visits, my time with Atrius over many years personally, and with different family members, is like death by a thousand cuts. "We'll have someone call you back to make an appointment." Nobody called me back to make an appointment. This was the final straw and why I'm now looking to finally sever ties with Atrius. Atrius Kenmore, but really Atrius in many other Boston/great Boston locations, across primary and specialty care, has consistently proven itself to be lacking in putting the patient first. The patient experience is poor: the pharmacy calling my spouse to let them know my medication is ready (their reply: whoops, we called the wrong number, sorry), clinics consistently cancel appointments and offer to reschedule months later, wait times in the larger waiting room, and in the patient room are unpredictable and they do not let you know how much of a delay there will be. If we're supposed to arrive 15 minutes early, at least have the courtesy of being on time or communicating that the clinic is running late. Some of the top examples of poor processes: As the doctor finishes my exam, they say: "I'll send someone in to update your immunizations." 15 minutes later, nobody came in for the immunizations. I walk in the hall to find a nurse to explain the situation, and they say, "We didn't know you were waiting to update your shots." Come on. Or, doing the initial intake in the clinic room, with the scale and ruler literally in the same space. The assistant asks me, "What is your height and weight?" I suggested we measure both with the equipment in front of us. Come on, that's just lazy. And, aren't you suppose to objectively document that sort of thing if I'm packing on a few or have shrunk? Otherwise, my answer will be 6'3 and 224 lbs (IYKYK). Or, calling the patient relations office to discuss some of my concerns. They probably do not want to hear it, which is my guess for why they did not return my call. I even left a voicemail. Do better, patient relations. It's not often I leave voicemails. Office staff are a mixed bag - some are nice (truly a delight), some should consider positions elsewhere (perhaps scaring birds in a field). Using the Atrius email system to communicate is also hit or miss. Sometimes they respond, sometimes not. The lab personnel are pretty good, no real complaints with my interactions with them. They have mad (good) phlebotomy skills. My one minor complaint is if the service is supposed to open/come back from lunch at a certain time, the office staff should be there/back by that time, not minutes later. This is not island time, patients have places to be when they're not being patients. Calling urgent care after hours/on weekends has also been pretty good. I like this service. Health care is generally stretched, and clinics have to work with the resources they have. The parent organization of Atrius has a profit, not just revenue, in the billions. The poor patient experience starts at the top with resource allocation and training and trickles down to the stressors of the local level. Each member of Atrius has the responsibility to not just do the best they can, but to actually do good and make it easy for the patient. There needs to be a giant reset. Atrius, do better. Having to find new doctors for my family is going to be a burden. I'm willing to put in the effort because Atrius is broken on many levels. No more inertia or naive optimism that Atrius will improve. As I write this yelp review, I also see other 1-star reviews across the years in the margin. Channeling the Lorax, I believe that Atrius does not care a whole awful lot. Nothing is going to get better. It's not. I'm fortunate to live in an area where there are many doctor offices and hospitals. My experience with Atrius has set a floor for expectations. It can't get worse than this. I'm betting my family's next doctor's office will be better. In all probability, it will. read more

Type of care: Endocrinology I am always very content with the quality of my visits. The office staff are really nice, responsive over the phone (when you need to re-schedule), and make your check-in experience very easy. My endocrinologist is amazing. I love going to see her, the medical assistants are also really nice! PA Artemis Panagopoul did not let me finish a sentence when describing my symptoms, told me my four day fever might be allergies, then told me I had both flu A & flu B- an hour later (after I had already picked up the tamaflu they prescribed) I got a call saying they had read the test results wrong and I didn't have either flu. I have been a patient at Atrius-Kenmore for decades, using Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Gynecology, Podiatry, Ophthalmology, Urgent Care and other departments. My care has been thorough and timely. At 84 years of age, my health is excellent. I have had no trouble getting appointments, and I have very rarely been kept waiting on arrival. The health assistants, office staff, and administrative staff have been unfailingly helpful and polite. The team approach to care has worked very well for me. DONT GO HERE!!! Horrible. Every time I go there I have a horrible experience. Staff are rude, dismissive, disrespectful, and arrogant. Most of the doctors are the same and they don't listen to you when you have an issue. My insurance does not require referrals, yet I am always posed with the challenge of trying to get through their system, simply to get the care I know I need. Been coming to this location for decades and while I love my doctors, since Optum (UnitedHealth) bought them a couple of years ago the whole system has gotten terrible. Understaffed. You used to go in and there'd be 3+ people at terminals to check you in. Now there is one person and 3 empty terminals while everyone stands in line. Prior authorizations for medications are taking forever. Every staffer claims to be understaffed so nothing is getting done. The amount and quality of staff has tanked. The facility has become dirtier and rundown. But hey, at least the shareholders are happy. Another quality healthcare provider destroyed by corporate buyout. This review is for urgent care in Somerville and Kenmore. I went to UC in Somerville and was treated by Dr. Beauvais and was delighted with the treatment I received. Dr. Beauvais took the time to coordinate my Cat scan appointment at Kenmore the next day for diverticulitis. All went very smoothly. I arrived at Kenmore, was brought right in for the cat scan. I then went down to UC to see Dr. Beauvais as instructed and they took me right in. A few minutes later Dr. Beauvais poked her head in and said were just waiting for the radiologist to read the CT. Thank you for keeping me informed. A few minutes later she confirmed her diagnosis, gave me final instructions and I was on my way. Congrats to Dr. Beauvais and her staff. Instead of sending the correct ones for free (the incorrect medication was A LOT more) , my dad had to pay for it, again. When he called, the same staff who inputted the incorrect medication in the system mentioned in a rude tone that my dad was the one who gave him the wrong RX number. Flu symptoms so i called here Friday morning inquiring about urgent care. Kind of nervous because of all the bad reviews but I had an alright time on the phone, not too much wait. They added me to the system (my first time here) and gave me an appointment for 2.5 hours hence. Checked for flu, covid, strep, and sent a covid PCR. I told the PA how on Sunday I was in the ER for kidney stones (bit of a rough week lol), so she took a urine sample. (So relieved i didn't have to call back to urology at another hospital and get that sorted!) Still waiting on further results. The PA, Joyce, was super helpful, patient, thorough, and answered all my questions (what to do for the weekend, what to eat while on antibiotics, etc.) The nurses were efficient, too. I am just returning home after going to Urgent Care for weeks of lower back pain with mobility hindrances. I had an excellent experience at Atrius Health Care in Kenmore after less than satisfactory provider services from my PCPs offices in Copley. I had used the message tool to ask my doctor to see me urgently or refer me to the Urgent Care. My PCP did not return one of my 5 messages. Nurses replied with unhelpful info and I didn't think they were reading them and i am sure not the case - the messages back to me looked like and felt like an AI generator. Social manners are important to me, but I also have an expectation for mutuality in relationships. Urgent Care staff and nurses were first class agents for Atrius and I was treated quickly, professionally by the Chevon a great Nurse as well as her assisting nurses. They cared for me and very pleasant especially for the end of this Friday. I have a good understanding of the numerous problems with our Health Care system and I understand a lot of the links and laws and rules but if the doctor and his team don't respect me I will need to seek an alternative and this is a new system for me as my former PCP retired. I wish to make the provider experience with me good and pleasant but the provider needs to step up and offer the same. This rating is only for my Urgent Care visit today. One more note - I had a very bad blister and the Podiatrist helped me big time. I am reading your messages too and saying to self, "yes, I understand." read more

Not sure if I should leave two reviews separately, but the average rating will probably still be a three star, so here it is. The clinical people are simply awesome. I've been to at least seven or eight different locations for various things and everyone we encountered is just amazing and professional. (I should stress patient-encountering staff to make it different from my latter comment.) Things as simple as getting a vaccine was a pleasant experience. We've been to it's pharmacy and vaccine clinic for the past few years and all of them were efficient and great. It was even more contrasting when we had to go to CVS for COVID vaccine, because we couldn't wait until Atrius gets their shipment due to prior traveling plans. The wait and treatment at CVS was beyond terrible. What's worse was that no one seems to care. We never got that kind of treatment at Atrius. Even if there's a problem, they would go out of their way to make it better. On the opposite side, the non-patient facing people is a different story. Kim at medical billing or coding needs some serious empathy training. They need to understand there's a person on the other side of the phone, not a job that needs to be done. People have things going on in their life. They have their own frustration. It doesn't matter how careless you are to them. You need to show them you care. You are sincerely concerned about their situation. Even her last words of hope you're feeling better is more robotic than her true meaning. During the whole conversation, I was cooperative, giving every information requested, but in the end it made me feel that I made her job easy, and she made me feel miserable. It should be a two way communication. Enough said. Look into how phone staff works. They need some face-to-face interactions to understand how to deal with people. If they only sit on the phones, they will lose the touch Atrius front line people have put their heart and hands into. That's how you lose a patient, too. read more

I have been coming to the Kenmore location for over 20 years and it used to be great, quality care was received and the staff knew what they were doing. However as of late Dr's are leaving left and right, the department receptionist are mostly teens and younger people who don't take pride in their job and some are just down right rude. Nothing is worse than being ill and having to deal with a combative person that is supposed to be there to help you heal. Harvard needs to clean house and get some professionalism happening here again, starting with the big girl wearing the frizzy braids at the 4th floor registration desk...Her attitude leaves MUCH to be desired. read more

Normally, I like to deal with the optical shop. I've been going there over 20 years and gladly paid the prices higher because of the service. That's gone now. I dealt with "Amy" who was sullen and came across as viewing customers as an imposition. A bit short-sighted (pardon the pun) since the average sale there had to be $500. I had called earlier to ask about a type of lens and so had done my homework before going in. Talking to "Amy" was a like starting over again. I calmly picked up my scrip and left. My family and I have been coming to Kenmore and Watertown for over 30 years and it used to be a good place. Now days you cannot get an appointment and, if you get one it will be in other Vanguard office really afar away from your home, and you do not know the doctors. Receptionists and medical staff are unprofessional and not helpful at all. They lack of empathy. Urgent care answering staff are nasty and unprofessional. I have wasted hours on the phone with them on weekdays, and it is often to no avail--for instance it happened a few times that I asked for a referral and they did not put it through. Been going here for years now for their Behavioral Health department. They have a great team in that office and Dr. Weiczorack is the best Psychiatrist there. 10/10 would recommend here. There is a very friendly atmosphere in MOST other departments here too, but I will say I have had some billing issues and some very abrupt cancellations from other departments in the past though. The nurse at the urgent care was so incompetent; it took her 4 times to take my blood pressure, then she spelled my name wrong while registering my lab work. All the blood work that was done today cannot be used at all, simply because she couldn't spell my name correctly. My doctor, or rather the NP they gave me, completely missed a hyperthyroid disorder. I went experiencing weight gain and they just sent me to weight management (which took 4 months to get into) who was basically just a nutritionist. 10 weeks away from my due date and ready to look for a new OB. Current OB at this location is not welcoming whatsoever. I guess you can say she is professional but her demeanor is just so dry. I fear how uncomfortable it will be having her assist me during labor and delivery. I'm carrying my baby low and ambulating has become painful. She could care less and sees no reason to help me out a little with accommodations. I declined getting the Covid vaccine as I just don't feel comfortable doing so while pregnant and as a result she's become very stand-off with me. I am paying a pretty penny for health coverage. I shouldn't have to feel like this. Aside from this experience I've been to this location for urgent care, MRIs, etc and have had great experiences. read more

If I could I would give this facility a negative review. In my option the worst medical facility I have ever been to. They do not listen or value the patients option of their own health. After 3 visits in 2 weeks my daughter continues to get worse. But you can be sure they charged fully for each incompetent visit. And the nurse line after hours are the rudest most unprofessional people I have ever dealt with. I really loved my doctors at Harvard Vanguard, but now it's getting to be a pain! Every time I go in, I'm assigned to a new doctor or RN. This means that each time I need to go in for a special reason (aside from a check up), I feel like I have to explain my whole story over again. My OB/GYN should be better connected with my Internal doctor, so when I have issues with my medicine I don't have to see both. I then got a new doctor who seemed really invested in my care. I spoke to her over the phone, and we set up times to go in to check how I am doing. Then a nurse called me to say my appointment was canceled, and I had to set up a new one. I spoke to my doctor and she said that she wasn't sure why my appointment was canceled, as she was in that day. This is so frustrating. For me, getting time off of work is really difficult. So when I request that day off and my appointment is canceled, I have to start the whole process over. I feel like I'm hanging in limbo! I just called to try to make a new appointment, and while on hold, my call was dropped....twice! Now, I'm just annoyed. Why is this becoming so difficult? read more

I would recommend this center for endoscopy. For sedation, they use Versed (midazolam) and Fentanyl, like most places that do conscious sedation. Fentanyl decreases pain, and Versed makes you forget what happened during the procedure (and perhaps things that happen for minutes to hours afterward). Before my procedure I did some research, and I found that there are a lot of complaints about Versed - just search online for Versed and adverse reactions, memory problems, etc. Also, forgetting what happened in a 5-minute procedure (that's not even so painful that it really requires sedation) was not a high priority for me. I had heard that in some other clinics, the doctors really push Versed on their patients and give it to them even if they say they don't want it, perhaps because it makes things easier for the doctors by keeping you still (it's a muscle relaxant and in higher doses immobilizes people) and insuring that you won't remember if anything was uncomfortable (and won't get upset at them later). So I was really surprised when at this clinic, everyone was very supportive of my choice to go light on the Versed. I asked the person giving the anesthesia to use a half-dose. It was enough to make me comfortable (I felt fine) and to keep me from remembering the middle 3 minutes of the procedure, but I felt practically normal as soon as it was over, and remember everything that's happened since then. In general, the staff were very friendly and respectful. I have had endoscopy at MGH as well, and I like this place better. Remember, ... you have choices about your sedation! It's not such a bad idea to go sedation-free, but even if you consent to sedation, you can ask for Fentanyl (pain-killer) only or a low dose of Versed only. The Versed is for people who want to feel like they were out the whole time. Versed does not make you unconscious--you still feel things when you're on it--you just don't remember afterwards (except perhaps subconsicously or in possible flashbacks). read more

I've been going here for almost a year now, and utilized a bunch of their services. Overall, I find the location convenient and the place very professional, organized, and clean. Plus, it's amazingly helpful that pretty much everything you could need for medicine is in one place/network. For example, my PCP ordered routine blood tests that I could have done whenever it was convenient. A few weeks later, my allergist ordered blood tests, and after my visit, sent me down to the lab. The lab noticed that I had an outstanding order for the routine blood tests, and boom- they were able to take all of the blood in one sitting. It was really convenient. Allergy was pretty good, too. As a life-long allergy sufferer, NP Anne Plunket was good about listening to my personal history and helping me sort out what I was allergic to, without reinventing the wheel. My lone complaint about the allergy department was that a lot of their suggestions for combating environmental allergies seemed to be catered to people who lived in homes, rather than apartments. I don't have the space, for example, to keep nothing but my bed in my bedroom. The one bad experience I had there, and the one doctor I would not recommend to anyone would be Dr. Dorothy Dowling in gynecology. She was abrupt, rude, harsh, and condescending. During my exam, she talked to me in a baby voice, and seemed to think it was abnormal that I had been with my boyfriend for 4 years. From what she said during the exam, I could tell she disapprovingly assumed I was a member of a very conservative religion a) which I'm not and b) if I were, that wouldn't be her place to judge. After she finished the exam, she abruptly switched tones and started telling me haughtily how I was in dire, eminent risk of catching HPV in my long-term monogamous relationship, and that I absolutely needed to get the Gardasil shot because "my situation COULD change" in a way that conveyed that she thought I was naive and childish for trusting my boyfriend. This was not appropriate or professional behavior for a doctor, and I will be looking into switching doctors before my next exam. I'm also irritated because they've recently switched their doctor's admitting privileges to Beth Israel, when I specifically started going there because they had privileges at Brigham and Women's. I feel cheated. (UPDATE: You know my relationship "situation that COULD change?" Well it did. Our wedding is in March 2012.) read more

After noticing some swelling in a place too close to the girls for my liking, my PCP sent me to this location for ultrasound, just to rule out the bad stuff, and for peace of mind. The reception folks were friendly. My technician was soothing and reassuring. My visit to this location was as good as can be expected for the situation, at least until they had the doctor come in and read the images. The good news was that I apparently had nothing to worry about (just a lymph node that was a little swollen, but perfectly ok). The bad news is that the doctor made me feel like I was being ridiculous. It wasn't as if I just decided to walk in there one day to get an ultrasound. It was the idea of my PCP. And yeah, she didn't think it was anything to worry about, but wanted to send me for the test just to make sure. Please don't try to make me feel bad for following the instructions of my PCP and trying to make sure I'm ok. That's just not necessary. This would have been at least a 4-star review if not for that. Generally I've been pretty happy with Harvard Vanguard Medford and Somerville Centers. My issue is with her Sleep Clinic at Kenmore. Back in Sep 2014 I was very ill and contacted my PCP for a Sleep Clinic referral. She made the referral on 9/11 and told me someone would contact me to set up a consultation. Late November, my sleep issues started to improve but since I never heard back from the Sleep Clinic, I didn't contact them as I really didn't know who to contact. Besides, I wanted to wait and see if my sleep issues returned. Well, on 3/26/15 I finally received a voice mail to set up a consult. I was unable to get back to them right away as it's difficult to return calls during the day. They called me again on 4/6 and luckily I was available. I told the woman my sleep issues had improved and at this time I wouldn't need the consult. Well, she said "Thanks for letting us know" and I kind of detected a hint of annoyance but I could be wrong as she was hard to understand due to her accent. I bit my tongue and didn't say anything about the fact that it took so long for the referral and just curtly thanked her. The fact that anyone has to wait more than 6 months for consult is the real issue. At the time that I had the issues it was pretty scary. I can't imagine someone who suffers from serious sleep issues over a prolonged period having to wait months just for a consult. This service itself needs to change as no one should have to wait that long for an appointment. It also needs to improve from a customer service aspect. It would have been nice for someone from the clinic to call and let the patient know that there would be wait for a consult so a patient doesn't think they have fallen through the cracks. read more

I have been going here about 3 years and have had mostly negative experiences. I was assigned Dr. Worthington as my primary care physician and she was awful. I then switched to Dr. Garland who is leaps and bounds above her. It is relatively easy to schedule appointments but the wait times are atrocious. I've been here for one visit with the Midwifery practice. The building was very large and a tad difficult to navigate as a new patient/first time (I'm used to small practices), but the front desk staff throughout the facility were so helpful and pleasant! What a surprise compared to previous experiences. My appointment was first thing in the morning. I arrived 5-10 minutes early to my department and was roomed approx 5 minutes after my scheduled time by a very pleasant nurse who also assisted in getting paperwork to retrieve past medical records. My provider came in the room almost immediately and spent a lot of time getting a more detailed history and interview based on my new patient forms that I had filled out. It was a very productive conversation, and she included a lot of teaching including health promotion and women's health biology. I feel as though she used her time with me efficiently and that we covered a lot during my appointment - that is something I can truly appreciate as a patient, certainly a worthwhile visit! I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at HVMA Midwifery, and am changing my PCP to this facility since I had such a positive experience within the WH department. Like many things on Yelp, I've found a lot of the other reviews I've read to be quite misleading and would frankly be nervous to go here. I know that people are more inclined to write based on things they didn't like, or give 1-2 stars for a single bad experience (matched with other good ones) which is why I felt it most necessary to share my experience. For my first visit there, everyone at HVMA was professional, helpful and informative, both customer service and quality of healthcare were above my expectations! read more
