With last renovations in 1999, the property is in horrible condition. Everything is peeling, broken, smelly or dirty. While the exterior is still as iconic as it once was, this resort is in a state of despair. Let's back up. Arriving to the Fairmont, valets did not offer to help with bags or even hold the door, just stood there chatting. Front desk staff were kind and helpful, but the lobby looks like a terminal of JFK rather than a hotel, the amount of people is absolutely crazy. Infinite amounts of screaming kids and zero luxury atmosphere. If a Carnival cruise was designed in a French revival style, this is what it would look like. The guest room is acceptable and while renovations are needed there also, the views of the river to partially make up for the massive shortcomings. Perhaps the highlight of the property is some of the included activities, such as ice fishing and a beautiful ice skating rink during the winter. That was truly fun. The dinner restaurant here is quite good as well, servicing Quebec classics like locally raised duck and local venison. The lounge area overlooking the river leaves a lot to be desired, the staff work very hard, but at any given point, there is hardly anybody working and just like the lobby itself, very crowded and without a dress code, resulting in a very sloppy atmosphere and kids running around. Lastly, the Nordic spa. This should be the highlight, but once again, it is not proportional to the number of guests. There is no space to even turn around in those pools, no adult pool option and just a sense of filth. Thus, as a whole, Le Manoir Richelieu is not a property I can recommend.

We each had a beautiful cut of filet mignon with veggies for entrees, as well as escargots and spring rolls for appetizers. Everything was deliciously and perfectly prepared! The pool was well-maintained and enjoyable! If we ever visit this area again (likely!) we would definitely eat and stay here again!

The rating refers to the 3 courses dinner that I took with my 5 guests. It took them over 2 hours to get our main selection on the table! The whole 3 courses took 3.5 hours ... and sadly the food was far from inspiring. At close to $100 per head, this is completely unacceptable. There are a few great restaurants in La Malbaie - forget eating at l'auberge - it may seem convenient but you will regret it! Not impressed Lastly, you will see a great review from 2009 - it obviously refers to the previous chef who, from my previous stay at l'auberge, was excellent and inspiring.

Although their website shows it normally goes for $190-210, We were charged $240 for a 1-night stay. With taxes that was $285 Canadian. We'd been traveling for 3 weeks in the US and Canada, staying in nice places, and this was the most expensive. This inn is an old home and as a result, you hear conversations between floors and hear people walking by your room. At 2:08am the folks in another room got up to use the bathroom and it sounded like they were walking in our room - then they talked and laughed for a while. With that said, the owner was very welcoming, hospitable and interesting. She gave us a tour of the inn and offered us a glass of wine. The inn is a very comfortable space: the "magic" room with the wicker furniture, the living room with large fireplace and comfortable furniture, the dining room where a lovely breakfast is served, the exercise room where you can walk on a treadmill - all facing the river. Our room was large and also faced the river. We mentioned the noise issue to her and she said she had plans to get thick carpeting.

The room we stayed in - La Brunante - was for my money distinctly better than the other options: a spare, Japanese-style room with a vast and snowy king-size bed with a spectacular view of the wintry Saint Lawrence river. The private bathroom has a deep soaking tub that's almost as rewarding. The proprietor, Sylvain, is helpful without hovering, and his breakfast (served from 8-9:30 sharp) is worth waking up for: even in winter, we got four courses of fresh fruit, juices, crisp bacon, an effervescently light quiche. There's a stretch of beach just across the road to ramble on at low tide, and two downstairs fireplaces for warming up afterward. Definitely worth a stay if you're in town.
