It turns out that everyone enjoyed eating here more than anyplace else on the visit to Strasbourg, including a couple of Michelin-star stops. The burger (topped with ham and cheese) was juicy, well-seasoned and delicious. It was served with very good fries and a fresh green salad. The steak tartare, served on top of crispy hash-brown potatoes, was met with high praise. In addition to main courses, the restaurant has a showcase of beautiful desserts. Due to time constraints, we did not stay for dessert. Service here is excellent. The food came out quickly, and the servers were extremely attentive. When we were ready to leave, they were quick with the bill. They seemed to understand that you may have limited time, so everything moved at a relatively fast pace.

Our stay was literally 500 feet from the restaurant so we totally lucked out! It's a tiny restaurant with only about 10 tables. It was full of Germans and even the one woman server seemed German but spoke delightful French and she was also very friendly and helpful with the menu. Alsacienne food is served here which is more of a German twist. The wines are inexpensive, blanc, and more on the sweeter side - delicious paired with food. My salad was amazing and huge. Lettuce was topped with juicy pieces of grilled chicken, sweetest tomatoes, apples, almonds, and amazing deep fried croutons. Why can't they do this all over France? Husband's starter was the omelette and salad. The buttery omelette was decadent and had generous bits of bacon. YUM! The entree was choucroute (saurkraut - a must have in this area) topped with pork belly, ham, bratwurst, sausage, potatoe and a dallop of mustard. It was all delicious and very satisfying to say the least. The meal was surprising inexpensive - we had so much food =) A high recommendation!!

The tastiest dessert went to the Amara ice cream - basically vanilla and cherry ice cream with creme patisserie and tasty boozy local cherries and kirsch drapped over it. The second time, half the party had la tete de veau. My uncle said it was the best he'd ever had. One person had the gratinee with jambon, which was to die for. Their crispy duck-fat potatoes are delightful. The staff were friendly and welcoming with a leisurely pace that fit our vacation pace. I would definitely make this a regular.

Whether it's true or not I've heard that the Alsace region has the most Michelin starred restaurants of all the regions of France, and so far everything I had in Alsace didn't disappoint me a bit, thanks to my friend Gauthier!!! :-) La Taverne Alsacienne offers various "Tarte Flambée", also known as "Flammekueche" , which is like a thin crust pizza with cream, onion, and chopped bacon. We ordered the classic version with Munster (Alsacienne cream cheese) which was excellent! It's simple and yet so tasty! YUM!!! From the list of various röestis (potato and cheese garnished casserole), my friend picked the one with thick piece of pancetta and egg on top, which was a rustic, hearty, and simple dish. No export fees or upcharges...you're getting it straight from the source! You can order a bottle of wine for less than $10. Its cheaper than soda!
