Augusta and Company is the cities Visitor center. As well as recieving great information about the city and area for dining, directions, and tour information, they display and sell local products and art. This actually pretty cool. Clothing, consumable food and drinks are upfront and art and crafts towards the back of the store. The staff greet you with a warm smile and kind words. Must visit place if you are new to or visiting Augusta.

This review is long over due. Pretty cool visitors' center!!! I happen to see large groups of people going in here while passing by, so I decided to stop and see what was going on in this busy little place and I'm glad I did! There was a local chef here serving food seasoned with her very own spice. She had a beautiful fruit salad, a seafood boil, and some other dish maybe chicken salad. I purchased the season and was given a little recipe book. The staff gave us a brief tour and overview of the place. They showed us the many arts and craft goods available for purchase by different local artists. Our tour guide also let us know that we could expect lots of other pop ups from local artists, chefs, and creative vendors. There's also a few good photo ops to take here. One is a mural with The Godfather of Soul!! What else can be expected in Augusta!!! This place is also connected to a cute eatery next door!!!

When construction on the dam began in 1955, it formed Lake Hartwell. Downriver from here is the city of Augusta. The concrete and earth structure spans nearly three miles long, rising 204 feet above the riverbed at its apex. The dam produces 467 million Killowatt hours of electricity annually (by comparison, the Cowans Ford dam near Charlotte https://www.yelp.com/biz/cowans-ford-hydro-station-stanley?hrid=oG_nu67k8wR0NPzhhylQgQ generates 350 million Kilowatt hours. There is a visitor center but it is closed right now (July 2020) because of the pandemic. However, there is parking (and a basic restroom) on the Georgia side of the river, downstream from the dam. A bunch of folks were fishing and seemed to be doing well. [Review 13640 overall, 959 of 2020, number 331 in Georgia.]

We enjoyed the serene quiet, with only the lulling sounds of the water passing through the electrical generating turbines. Swirling commotion that oddly soothes. Whether just a day trip, do a little fishing trip or camp a night or two trip this place has it all. Away from the big city and little city alike.
