They had knowledge of the entire low country area, not just Beaufort town proper. They also offered some tourist book up-sells if you really like Beaufort:)

Conveniently located immediately off 17-A (and with road signs to let you know you're approaching), the historic Frampton Plantation is a free Visitors Center/Gift Shop/Mini Museum. It's great to stop in to learn a bit more about the area, take a photo op, pick up a gift for someone, or even use the restroom. During COVID, you must be wearing a mask and the gift shop employee will meet you at the door to spritz sanitizer in your hands before you can enter the building. After you go through the building, make sure to wander to the back of the house to view the start of the SC Revolution Trail located in the Gazebo and view the remnants of an earthen work trenches from a Civil War scrimmage that occurred on the property.

Downriver from here is the city of Augusta. The concrete and earth structure spans nearly three miles long, rising 204 feet above the riverbed at its apex. The dam produces 467 million Killowatt hours of electricity annually (by comparison, the Cowans Ford dam near Charlotte https://www.yelp.com/biz/cowans-ford-hydro-station-stanley?hrid=oG_nu67k8wR0NPzhhylQgQ generates 350 million Kilowatt hours. There is a visitor center but it is closed right now (July 2020) because of the pandemic. However, there is parking (and a basic restroom) on the Georgia side of the river, downstream from the dam. We enjoyed the serene quiet, with only the lulling sounds of the water passing through the electrical generating turbines. Swirling commotion that oddly soothes. Harry Hampton Visitor Center is the only visitor center for Congaree National Park. Very easy to…read moreget here, just a short drive from the entrance. Great bookstore with plenty of information and good souvenirs to take home. Ranger was super helpful in answering our questions. Clean bathrooms and plenty of parking. The visitor center is also the starting point for the Boardwalk Loop - it's an easy 2.6 mile loop that lets you experience a chunk of the park. You can get a brochure from the visitor center to do a self-tour of the loop with lots of good information about the park. Currently, a section of the loop is closed for repairs, but there's a gravel path you can take that still lets you complete a loop. Overall, both the visitor center and the Boardwalk Loop should be included in your trip to Congaree National Park.
