Was looking for something casual, "authentic" and near our hotel downtown, and this place fit perfectly. It was also reasonably priced. Started with a German red wine and a bottle of almdudler with a pretzel. My potato soup came out at the same time as my two Bavarian sausages. And the pork was good. I know that German restaurants aren't the same kind of rush experience that Americans are used to but we had literally been seated for a full hour and had nothing beyond the drinks and the pretzel (which technically was a side for my sausages). We visited here twice during our recent trip to Berlin. We were fairly close to the Gendarmenmarkt area which is all under construction. There were lots of restaurants to choose from but this one was always full - which is always a good sign! It's hearty, German style food with delicious beer to match. The servers were swamped but all very friendly and helpful. I was particularly thankful to our first waiter who steered me away from the Currywurst to the Fried sausage plate. While we wanted to sit outside, due to the construction next to the seating area, we went inside. After reviewing the menu, I went with the Crispy Knuckle of Pork - 1kg(2.2lb). This is big enough to share with 2-3 people. Others in the party went with Roast of Pork and some other dishes that I can't recall now :) The service was good - typical German style... expect to wait a bit and yeah, German's aren't in hurry, so sit back, relax and enjoy your food. The beer was awesome, my favorite was the cabbage salad. As for the Knuckle - the size will impress you, but was disappointed with the dish. The skin was super crispy and nice, but be careful when you eat it, otherwise you might knock out some teeth. The meat outside the knuckle were dry and over cooked unfortunately. They're no strangers to tourists. They have menus in English. I already had a list of German foods I like so, all I had to do was to pick what dish to get from each restaurant we went to. Crispy Pork Knuckle: A whole pound of fried pork knuckle served with Bavarian cabbage and sauce. This can feed 2-3 people. Crispy, fatty pork goodness. 4.5/5 Weißwurst: 2 white sausages served with sweet mustard and freshly baked pretzel. Great sausages and the mustard is a nice dip for the pretzel. 4/5 Hefeweizen Hell: When in Germany, a beer is a must. Blonde hefeweizen that's fruity. It's light and goes down smoothly. The food was good and midwestern sized portions. Lots of tourists - like me - plus a number of large parties of locals. The waitress was not always present but she tried to be helpful - when my daughter ordered what sounded like sausages in broth she flagged what it was and suggested that it might be an acquired taste. My daughter went with it and liked it, but likely would have preferred the sautéed version. The mashed potatoes were very good. The food is authentic and delicious, the service is efficient and awesome, the beer is amazing from its parent company which is going to be 700 years old by 2028. Light, friendly, just a typical German beer hall in the middle of Berlin. I came here for my liter of beer, something I like to do once a year when on an adventure. The draft beers were great. I went for Augustine Hell, the best beer on the menu, according for our server. My travel buddy tried the Augustiner Edelstoff, a creamier light beer that breathes of adventures to come. The ham and cheese plate comes with an amazing amount of root vegetables which really breaks up the beer. Gayle and I were in Berlin for the day a couple months ago as part of a day-long Viking Cruise ship excursion (via train from Warnemunde). It was Monday, it was hot, and most of the museums were closed. As our group got off the bus, our nice guide pointed out a couple nearby restaurants and Augustiner was one of them. Maybe our group had the same idea, as most of us made a straight line to this place, even though it was open yet. Once they were open (after I made a great stop at Antiquariat am Gendarmenmarkt across the street), we took a seat at a nice outside table. The inside has more of a beer hall motif if that's your thing. We ordered what I'll call "German Standard": Sausages, Kraut, Potato Salad, Strudel (for Dessert), and of course a couple steins of beer. All or our choices (including mustard) were very good and way too filling. The Kraut in particular was a pleasant surprise as I view it as kind of an afterthought in US venues (like ballparks). Service was a bit uneven, but we weren't going anywhere anytime soon. I think the star was the Beer...goes by the name of Hell. It was fine, fine, fine and I don't even drink alcohol, but I usually regurg beer taste- not this one. We also came for the Pork Knuckle for the hubby. For me it was ok to taste, but he loved it! My currywurst was alright, too, you know, I did not dislike it. I was just curious if it tasted like curry; it was tomato based, more like marinara. The wait staff seemed to be used to tourists because this was the only place we've been where food came relatively fast and waiting for the bill was shorter than most. The Yelp rating of 3-1/2 stars does not paint a just picture of the place. Augustiner should be a solid 4 to 4-1/2 stars. Quickly glancing through some of the reviews, the issue seems to be a misunderstanding of the German beer hall culture. This is a beer hall so please don't expect service like an American fine dining restaurant. Germans (and most Europeans) are very laid back, and especially in a beer hall, no one is in any hurry to go anywhere. So don't expect quick service. Just sit back, relax, and soak in the environment. Your server also won't check back with you after food is delivered. If you need anything, just flag them down. This place was always super packed every night we passed by it, and it was a local favorite. The atmosphere was lively and chill; the vibes were authentically German. I couldn't help but order a full liter of beer and lived my German life, at least for the moment. PORK KNUCKLE: This German signature dish was close to perfect. The skin was so crispy that when I sank my teeth into it, the skin just crumbled and melted in my mouth. The meat was tender, moist, and flavorful. The Bavarian cabbage that accompanied the knuckle was delicious. I like that it was only slightly acidic, had just enough tartness but was not overwhelming. AUGUSTINER SAUSAGE: Germany is the country of sausages and I was determined to sample as many different types as I could on this trip. This is a coarse and meaty sausage which was rich in flavor and had a good blend of herbs and spices. HELL: Augustiner, just like most beer halls, brews their own beer in wood barrels, and I highly recommend "Hell" which is a Pilsner beer that is crisp, a little dry, slightly bitter, and goes perfectly well with a pork knuckle. When I was in Berlin I knew I wanted to eat what the locals would eat. I have a friend who lives in Berlin and they recommended that I eat at Augustiner. I took the recommendation and it was located right next to my hotel. The only German food I have ever really had was a beer hall in Zurich and at Disney World's Epcot German restaurant. I wanted to find something good that screamed German and when I walked in I knew I was in the right place. I came in and saw a lot of seats were reserved. I was seated in the bar area and it was nice table with a beer barrel as the base. I noticed lots of beer barrels and the bartender told me they keep the beer in the barrels. I thought this was awesome as in America it was in the kegs. I knew I wanted a beer, so I asked the bartender to set me up with the full liter of something German. The beer they gave me was delicious and it was a lot. But I did finish it! The price for a liter of German beer was only 6.5 Euros The menu has a lot of awesome traditional dishes. Thankfully they have an English and German menu so I knew what I was getting. I started with a german pretzel. The pretzel was good and it was a little harder than soft pretzels in the US. It was warm and salty. It I am sure is what a real pretzel should taste like. I next had a bowl of potato soup. It was amazing! It was soo good. It had big chunks of potato, carrots, and sausage in it. It was in a sauce that was not cream based but it was thick. I smiled while eating it and told the waitress how much I enjoyed it. For my main entree I asked the waitress what was the best seller. She told me the Knuckle. It was really good. It was two large pieces of Pork, over a bed of sautéed cabbage and a giant dumpling. My family and I dined here and requested to sit for dinner. It took us 15 minutes just to get seated. We loved the crunchy pork knuckles, and the citrusy sweet Radler beer. The pork knuckles had amazing crackingly crunchy skin. The meat from the pork knuckle was ok, it needed some salt. One pork knuckle feeds 3-4 people. We ordered 3 pork knuckles for 5 people. Don't do this. The Radler beer was refreshing and tasted like a sugary kombucha. Everyone liked this beer the best. The other house beers were ok. The Schnitzel was good. It was head sized, very crunchy and pounded thin. The potatoes sides were just small bowl of sliced potatoes with pickled cucumbers. You can skip this. Soft baked pretzel- ordinary. You could get this anywhere. The service was terrible. Waited a while to sit, to order, to clear plates. We asked for the leftover pork knuckles to be boxed as a takeaway. Then we waited half an hour for that. Finally, the waitress mentioned the bill doesn't include tip (duh!) She then gave herself 10% tip! Usually in Europe, you leave 5% for good service. Decided on the pretzel, roasted pork, and fried sausages. The pretzel was warm, fresh, and slightly crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside. I liked how it wasn't overly salted. I tried some of the roast pork, which I enjoyed. Tender and juicy. Eaten with pieces of the crispy pork skin made the dish even better. If I comment on food alone I'd give it a solid 4 star, but once you take into account the price/ service experience I can't help but to give it only 3 stars. It might be a culture thing but I found most restaurants in Berlin quite understaffed and generally the service is poor (because this shop is just way too busy). Food tasted nice, but as I said, it is on the pricy end especially when they fairly similar to Lowenbrau yet chargers a good 20-30% more. What do you do when you go to another country and your hungry but you can't understand their menu? You look at what everyone else and make your decision from there. So this place actually had an English menu for folks like me. But the decision was easy because pretty much everybody had a beer on their table and this dish in front of them.... Crisp pork knuckle - this was my first meal in Germany and my first pork knuckle to set standards by. I'm going to say overall this was the best I'd had. Solid German food, tasty beer, pleasant service and plenty of outdoor seating. What else can you want? We had a radler (pilsner with lemonade) and an Ellstor (?) and both were clean and crisp. The radler very refreshing on a warm day. We actually came for an afternoon snack and later for dinner so we tried three dishes: 1. Two narrow fried (flat top grilled really) sausages with mashed potatoes and sauerkraut for €7.50. The sausages were quite thin but well seasoned - sort of like American bratwurst. Kraut had a nice kick but also was somewhat savory - better than most. 2. The roast pork with crispy skin, sautéed cabbage and boiled dumpling for €13.50. Pork was moist and tender but lacked seasoning. The boiled dumpling took some getting used to. It was a really sticky and gummy golf ball sized lump of egg batter that as promised was boiled. Its saving grace was a small amount of browned butter crumbs on top that really added nice flavor to complement the egg notes. 3. A Reganburger sausage salad. We had no idea what this would be like and only ordered it to avoid a €7.50 splitting charge if I did not order food. For €2 more we got what turned out to be a really nice tasting salad for €9.50 and not felt taken by having to pay a sharing charge. The salad was purple and green baby lettuce topped with basically fine strips of a mortadella like sausage mixed with gerkin pickles. The vinaigrette was the perfect acidic balance to the sausage. The dressing was so good we mopped it up with the complimentary rye bread. What we did not get (because we ordered incorrectly) was the roasted and fried crispy pork shank (they called it the knuckle) for €17.50 we had seen go by so often earlier in the day. We don't like the idea of coming back to the same place a third time in only four days here but it looks well worth it. Our only complaint was the server in the evening taking everything off the table slowly before we got our food and while we were still eating. The plant disappeared, then the coasters, salt and pepper, menus etc. He also was very short tempered with a poor group behind us who did not understand the menu items served for two or three. A tourist experience and nothing more! The high review goes to the good food and amazing beer. If you're looking for the tourist Bavarian style beer hall this is the place for you. I would say it's a tad less touristy than the hauffbrau house and the food is better. I thought everything was a bit overpriced but I guess that's the price you pay when going to a place like this. What I didn't like about this place? THE SERVICE. I have never had worse service in Europe than I have at this place. They were incredibly rude and never came to our table to see if we needed anything until they wanted to leave, then they kept trying to take our plates away with food on it? I had to ask them to put the plate back down because I was still eating, and this happened not once but two times. Never in Europe would you have this happen to you except here. I'm sure they are used to dealing with lots of Americans, and had the audacity to circle the bottom where it suggests 20%... I almost lol-ed in front of the waiter. Not only is it not custom to tip more than 5-10% but the service was the worst I've ever experienced. I work in the industry and panicked while he stood over me and left 15%, instantly regretting my choice. Needless to say I won't be returning but the wurst's were fantastic! Ps. Berlin is not a Bavarian City and the whole indoor beer hall things you see on tv are best saved for a trip to Munich.
