After consulting with a number of specialists, the consensus was clear. Dr. Puterman is the best at what he does in the DMV--and my particular case (don't ask) required the best. I confess, I was skeptical. But a little more than half a decade (and several surgeries later (don't ask), I have a functional mouth again. Not only teeth that work but teeth that look great. Best of all, the pain that tormented me for decades is gone. GONE. Obliterated. Throughout this ordeal, Dr. Puterman stuck by me. And I by him and his extraordinary staff and colleagues. Dr. Puterman was always honest. Always fair. Always honorable. Always kind. And always decent. This is not what I would have expected given the intrinsic challenges of my case and the fickle nature of human biology that doesn't always cooperate with titanium and bone grafts. And yet--here I am--finally some five plus years later. Grateful beyond words for my experience with Dr. Puterman. Don't get me wrong. I won't miss being in his chair for scores of additional hours. I'm a grateful patient. And what makes me especially grateful is that we made it--together. Unfortunately this also resulted in neglect of routine dental care which only got worse. I recently had a root canal done at another office who referred me to Dr. Park for follow up and I'm so grateful that they did. Aside from the root canal follow up, I knew I had two teeth in the back that I was convinced would need to be extracted because they had such large, deep cavities. Dr Park not only prevented them from being extracted, but was able to fill them in office and save them entirely. He is so kind and gentile, walks me through everything he's doing, and answers the firehose of questions I throw his way effortlessly. His reception staff are also outstanding and have been able to get me in for follow up appointments quickly. While I don't think I'll ever "enjoy" going to the dentist, I couldn't ask for a better experience than with Dr. Park. Can't recommend him enough!

Dr. Park was honest when I came in for a second opinion and assured me that that number of fillings was not necessary and only filled the cavities that needed them. Additionally, Dr. Park has excellent bedside manner and is very gentle when doing dental work. I was very comfortable during the fillings I did have done (didn't even feel it--and i've had many painful dental experiences as a kid) and he makes sure to keep you in the loop during the process so you're not taken by surprise by anything (during regular cleanings too). He is very transparent about things that you may need to keep a close eye on and provides helpful suggestions for what you can do to prevent issues from getting further. Overall, if you're looking for a dentist to go to in the DMV area I definitely recommend the Parks!

I have been seeing Dr. Handelman off and on for over 10 years (12? 15? I can't remember when I started seeing him!) and have always been pleased with everyone in the office. Originally, my mother, older brother, and I would see him for our regular cleanings at least since I was in middle school (that's as far back as I remember). He has done my sealants and filled a cavity and was really good working around my braces for the 4 years that I had them, too. I have never been worried about going to the dentist! He (and his assistants) have always been great as long as I can remember. When I was 15 or so, he recommended that I get all of my wisdom teeth removed and told us about a program through NIH that would save my mom a lot of money. I ended up not getting my teeth out then, since they never bothered me and he didn't push the matter at all. When I was in my late teens I stopped going to see him, but my mom kept up her visits and brought my step-dad along to join in on the dental fun. He had to have a lot of work done and had good things to say about Dr. Handelman and the recommended surgeon. Fast forward several years to when I got insurance again and Dr. Handelman was the first (and, truthfully, the only) doctor I called for a check-up. We picked up right where I left off all those years ago. He asked what I have been doing with myself and how my mom and brother were doing. He looked at my fillings and my wisdom teeth and told me he did have some concerns, but nothing that was a pressing issue. He was out-of-network with that insurance (MetLife), but the desk staff took care of all of my paperwork. I did have to pay some up-front, but after the claim forms went through I ended up with an $80 credit towards my next visit. (The woman I spoke with offered to send me a check for the $80 if I wanted. I declined.) I changed jobs and lost insurance and stopped going to see him (again). When I got insurance back through my new job (United Healthcare, this time), again, Dr. Handelman was the first doctor I called. By now, another couple of years had passed and my mom and step-dad had moved away, but he still asked after them. He checked everything out and we talked about the concerns that he had had the last time I was in and decided that, since nothing was bothering me, he wasn't going to do anything. He told me that there was no sense in spending the money to have a procedure done when it wasn't necessary yet. (A big thanks for thinking of my savings account! :) ) (Dr. Handelman also takes care of my husband's teeth and the last time he was there he came home and said, "The doctor told me to tell you and your mom hello.")

I left a message on the voice-mail because I had a minor emergency, and Dr. Handelman himself called me back to diagnose my situation. After speaking with me over the phone, he felt it was best for me to come in to the office because I was leaving for a business trip over the weekend. What is most frustrating is that this policy was never disclosed before treatment. Had I been informed in advance that I would be expected to pay out of pocket despite having insurance, I would have declined the services and sought care elsewhere. Patients deserve complete transparency regarding financial policies before any work is performed. Springing unexpected payment demands on patients after treatment is unacceptable and undermines trust in the provider. Being upfront about costs is a basic expectation of any professional medical practice. The lack of transparency left me feeling misled and frustrated. Regardless of the quality of the medical care, billing practices like this are enough to make me never return or recommend this office to anyone. Patients should know exactly what their financial responsibility will be before consenting to treatment--not after the fact.
