During a wee wander in the Marais district (one of my favourite areas in Paris), Lumberjack and I stumbled into the Auld Alliance Scottish Pub. The novelty drew us in, especially since it was a holiday away from good ole Glasvegas. We just HAD to... meh. It had a similar feel to pubs back home... only replace the thick Glaswegian accent with a French one. The pub is quite sports oriented with a pool table, dartboards, and many television screens (to watch big matches, I presume). They offer an extensive selection of whiskies, and many other brews. I will have to say this place is super overpriced. But then again you're in Paris... I know, I know. For 2 drinks, it was over 14€. Both of us scoffed at the IRN-BRU price of €3.50! For those not in the know, it's Scotland's other national drink... in all its neon orange liquid glory. The atmosphere was pretty laid back, but busy. The barmaids were also friendly. They offer a weekday happy hour(s) from 5-8pm. They also serve food at different points in the day. Another highlight is that they do brunch and haggis on the weekend from 12-4pm. Although after paying such high drink prices, and having the real good stuff waiting for us back home, there was no need to come back to try the brunch & haggis. Bottom line: if you're a homesick Scot in Paris, have a deep love of whisky, or willing to pay an exorbitant 3.50€ for IRN-BRU this place is for you! read more

Even though I'm English, I felt right at home here. When it comes to watching international sports in Paris I can't image there are too many places. The staff were super friendly, seemed to know the regulars and even shouted me a couple of free drinks when two of them finished their shift. There are loads of screens, they have the full sky package and I imagine they would show most things if you asked nicely (before the football cricket, tennis and athletics were all being shown). It's not particularly cheap with beers from €6 but the relaxed atmosphere and wide selection made up for that. I didn't try the food cause €5 seemed a lot for a scotch egg, but if you're missing home maybe it would be worth it. read more

Looking for a bar to watch the football or rugby in can sometimes be a pain in Paris with bars being over-priced, too busy or jusy plain lifeless, but this little watering hole seems to have solved this issue for me. Food and Drink: With other similar pubs in central locations taking a good 6.5 euros from you for a pishy pint of Kronenbourg, it's difficult to complain when you're charged 6.60 for a good pint of Pelforth blond (happy hour only seems to run Mon - Fri and I only ever pop in on a Saturday so couldn't comment on the price). Certainly not the cheapest bar in Paris, but no where near the dearest. There is also a classic pub food menu with burgers etc with the pick of the bunch surely being the burger and chips with a bottle of Budvar coming in at 10 euros. Not bad at all. You can also find that sacred orange heaven Irn Bru in there. Screens: While there is no monster of a screen, there are plenty of decent sized screens about the place. No matter where you're sitting, you're sure to have a good enough view of the action. I would say that if you're more of a football lover, sometimes they give the rugby the priority if there is a clash of fixtures. Atmosphere: Every time I've been in the past, there has been a great atmosphere. It's nice and loud, but can get pretty hot and sweaty and mighty crowded. If you get there in good time you'll have no problems. The little pool table at the back of the bar can act as a more private space if you get enough coins on the table early enough (there is a good sized TV in there too), and there is also a dart board towards the back if that floats your boat. Summary: If you like your live sport and dont mind paying the average price for booze in Paris, this place can do you no wrong. Good place to clink your glasses and have some good ol' banter with Anglos and French people alike. read more

Obviously they have an excellent selection of single malt (and blended, but less so) scotch whiskies, that all seem to be fairly priced. Even without happy hour, cocktails are only 6 euros and pints 5 euros. It's a bit difficult to get served at the bar if it's crowded and people are sitting there, but I can imagine this being a nice place to watch a game when it isn't 10 pm on a Friday night. I'm tempted to come back for the pub quiz night. read more

Come one come all. This is the place to get your fix of Scottishness in Paris. The pub boasts the largest collection of malt whiskies in Paris at over 100, together with some Scottish beers. Though not a sports fan myself, this is also a popular choice for Champions League and Rugby watching. Enjoy your sports here if you must, but something I can whole-heartedly recommend is a great pub quiz on Monday nights, with friendly competition from regulars it is a great introduction to pub life. In a city known for its elite stature and snootiness, there's something quite comforting about walking into a classic English pub (scratch that, it's Scottish; I made the mistake of saying English, only once). The Auld Alliance has waist-high bar stools, a lackered wooden bar, and plenty of tables for your *Scottish breakfast on Sunday hangovers. This is Paris, so the beers are a bit pricey (around 6-8 euros), but happy hour prices hover around 5. Most importantly, this is a pub; you go there to drink and talk. I chatted with an Australian man who had an interesting view on politics involving shark bait. The bartender reminisced about surfing in the Land of Oz. Another guy at the bar talked about his five surgeries on his left shoulder (two on his right)--he was a professional rugby man in France before Old Man Winter came calling. This is a welcoming pub, and the Scottish breakfast is spot on. I think it was around 14 euros, but I didn't think about the price once I'd downed my cafe au lait, orange juice, and meal to last me until the night. Come for the change of brasserie scenery, stay for the conversation, pool, and darts (NB: the dart board is in a weird spot in the bar, so the depth perception gets thrown off, for those amateurs amongst us). read more

They mean by that the treaty that stipulated that if either country, France or Scotland, was attacked by England, the other country would invade English territory. A symbol of Friendship between our two nations. But now it's history of course! There are 4 Scottish pubs in Paris. Pure Malt is the one I still have not been to. The 3 others have the same owner: The Thistle which is a sports pub, The Highlander which is the smallest one and where live music takes place and The Auld Alliance which is a pub and a restaurant. I've never eaten there but, honestly speaking, haggis is not my kind of food. Nevertheless, do make a try. They have the usual pub grub and I'm sure the quality is perfect. I've tried here two Scottish beers: Caledonian which is very decent and Deuchars. Deuchars, a pale Ale, is my favorite. Try it! And come for Happy Hour! The staff is great too and the atmosphere is perfect to watch some rugby and football. read more

Spent an unexpectedly wild night here after traveling for 20 hours. Planned to drop in for beer and a bite and see if we could catch the MLS championship game. We were not disappointed! They happily found the game for us and after chatting a bit, the bartender bought us a round of whiskey shots. Laughed and chatted with a handful of regulars and closed down the bar after about 8 more whiskey shots each. Stumbling distance back to our Airbnb room. Tons of fun. Lots of trouble! read more

Flagging Scots boozer gets flag makeover For those of you who think they know the A.A. that sleepy little venue by St-Paul, the brown walls, studded leather chairs and that ultra-authentic Scottish ambience of quiet and not altogether unpleasant desperation, get down there and check the new decor! The walls have been daubed floor to ceiling with the glorious flag of St Andrew. Even the gents. Only a few select relics of the past have been permitted to remain, such as the sword wielded by Australian folk hero William Wallace, the sofa and the slow service. Unfortunately, it remains inexplicably one of the sleepiest bars in the city, except when the Tartan Army is in town and woe betide the Sassenach.... Wednesday's interactive jazz night is the best bet for a first visit but beware... the 9.00 pm happy hour deadline is applied mercilessly. read more

I was worried that I would find terrible scotch in Paris and as soon as I ordered in my native French and got a confused, bonafide Scotsman, I knew that I had walked into a legit place. They had some pretty interesting drams for a place in Paris and although some of the best ones were sadly sold out, I still got to try some delicious 80-90 release Islays that made me wonderfully peaty and warm inside. The ambiance is lovely and if you can get one of the comfortable large leather chairs you just won't want to leave. I have no idea what the people ordering beer and other random non alcohol cocktails where doing here, but kudos to them as long as they help pay the bills for the rest of us! read more
