Neither of us did a much searching for places to eat or things to do in Vienna as we depended on either Yelp or the "36 Hours in"... NY Times series. We found ausklang on Yelp and it happened to be close to our hotel so we decided to try it. From the reviews, we expected more of a restaurant than a bar which happened to serve food and smells pretty strongly of cigarette smoke (something I hate).
We both ordered a cheeseburger and a drink. My wife, a cocktail and I, a beer. The cocktail turned out to almost entirely mixer and very little alcohol. My beer, from a bottle, was tough to mess up. One thing that we thought was odd right off was when the waitress asked us if we wanted catchup (doesn't everyone?). That kind of raised our senses right off.
A bit later our burgers came.... with a small bowl of catchup in the middle of a bunch of fries and a burger. Hmm, looks good. We both bit into it and the first thing you get is a strong flavor of some sort of spice (we couldn't recognize) which was far stronger than the taste of grilled beef. Not bad, just not great.
The rest of the meal was pretty uneventful except for my wife deciding to order a margarita after dinner. It came in a martini glass which had a huge salted rim and was only about half full with no ice. Warm margarita? I thought they knew how to make drinks here.
We had two waitresses. One was nice but had really scary teeth and smelled like she'd been out running in the sun all day and the other kind of sneered at us each time she spoke to us. I couldn't tell if she needed glasses or didn't like us.
Would I go back... probably not. Was it that bad, not really. Would I ever recommend it? Never. If I could give it 2.5 stars, I would. However, it gets two stars because of that. read more
