Absolutely pretension free, warm welcome wine shop, owned by an Advanced Somm who is both helpful…read moreand delightful, with wines by glass or bottle in a bright, casual space on Bend's westside in the Hixon complex. Whether you're an old wino...umm well aged oenophile...like my husband and me who have been drinking wine for 40+ years or a complete newbie to the world of wine trying your first glass, go here! Viaggio opened in 2022, a handful of years after we moved from Bend after nearly 20 years as residents, and alas about that timing for us because if we still lived there we would be here weekly, at least, to sip. SET UP: Walls of wine throughout the shop with bottle prices marked on front which I assume one can open to drink there as well as buy to go. But we spied Viaggio on our way to dinner reservations next door (The Hook and Plow) so popped in after dinner. Alcohol lightweights that we find ourselves to be at this age and having had cocktails with dinner, we came in to Viaggio to peruse the by glass menus and bottles and stayed to enjoy pours from the 2oz Coravin menu. Both that menu and the by glass larger pour menus are great ones (I posted photos of both sides of the two menus) which is no surprise given the credentials of the owner, Benjamin Richardson, as both Somm and fine dining management experience including as wine manager at the 3 Michelin starred Meadowood restaurant in the Napa Valley. PAY FOR THE WINE BUT THE PRICELESS EDUCATION IS FREE: We bought a couple of bottles of an Italian varietal I enjoy that is hard to find and when I asked the server if there was any in the shop, I didn't see it in the tall walls of wine as I made a casual pass along them, she said she'd ask the owner. In a few moments Benjamin was tableside with two bottles from different wineries and also to share information about them and the varietal. We paid for both and since we were traveling they were very nice to hang on to them for us for a few days until we passed through Bend again. READ ABOUT THE JOURNEY: Viaggio means journey in English and I so recommend reading the owner's story in his Yelp page summary to learn the significance of that as we were able to do in speaking with him in the shop. If you're wanting to enjoy a glass or bottle of wine in a great space this is the place. If you want help in filling out a wine collection, or to make selections for meal pairing or learn about wine this is the place. If I could wave a magic wand for a perfect wine shop, this would be it. SEATING: Indoors in front and back of shop at tables and chairs and a long communal table at back of shop too. Looks like outside seating as well during daytime and / or nice weather but it was a rainy night when we visited so no outdoor service. EATS: A small selection of wine appropriate nosh are offered on the menu. On the right night, a glass and a plate or two of these would be linner or dinner for us. ACCESSIBILITY: Winos on wheels, as I was in using wheelchair for this visit, are welcome thanks to equal access of level in the door, all on one floor and standard height tables and chairs. Also one side of the communal table is a long bench but the other side are chairs that could be moved for access for wine drinker in a wheelchair to have access to join friends at the same table. You would be amazed how many places miss this important point of providing that kind of full inclusion seating in communal spaces. Good for Viaggio for getting it right. PARKING: The Hixon Apartment lot can be crazy full at night time. Note if you're picking up a wine order there are 30 minute limit parallel parking spots right across from the front of Viaggio. Accessible (AKA ADA) parking is at side of building and at the back side of Hook and Plow.

Excellent vibe. YELP Short Answer: Yes, visit and join if you're into your vino, Location: Lots of parking and easy to find. Buildout, Excellent but be aware of sun during certain times of year, they have shades but it can be bright and warm even when it is freezing outside, not an issue. Seating is very comfortable. Menu: So many options, best to ask questions or order by the glass. I believe this is more geared to purchase a special bottle to enjoy, but many by the glass options as well. Wine pours: generous but measured most of the time, everyone seems to be there for fun but it is a business so order often and tip generously ; ) Food options: Limited but changing but nice caviar options as they become available. Ask questions if you're curious about caviar options. Value: Excellent value for spending some relaxing time, a glass of wine solo or with a group, very well done. We will be back and will support them, hope you do the same.

Follow the alley. Trust me…read more You know those places you stumble into and immediately think, "Yep...this is my kind of spot"? That was San Simón for me. At first, walking down the alley in downtown Bend, I honestly was not sure what we were about to find. Then we started seeing little fire pit pods, heated huts, glowing candles, and people tucked away having cocktails. It instantly felt cool without trying too hard. Walking into San Simón felt like stepping into some funky speakeasy hidden in plain sight. Dark lighting, moody atmosphere, David Bowie playing in the background, wild artwork on the walls that makes you stop and stare for a second. Just a great vibe all around. The kind of place where you sit down and immediately relax into the evening. The cocktails were excellent. Not overdone, not syrupy, just really balanced and well made. One of our favorites was the "Some Positive Feedback," which came with this sugar rim that looked awesome and added just enough sweetness without overpowering the drink. Bright citrus flavor, refreshing, smooth, and dangerously easy to drink. Then we asked the bartender if they could just make us something off the cuff. We said vodka, lemon and lime forward, not too sweet, maybe a little spice. They absolutely nailed it. Crisp, refreshing, layered citrus flavor with just enough heat on the back end to keep it interesting. Honestly one of those cocktails where everybody at the table takes a sip and immediately goes, "Oh wow." As a bourbon guy, I was also pleasantly surprised with the whiskey selection. The bartender recommended Stafford's Reserve, an Oregon bourbon, and I am glad I listened. Smooth, approachable, a little sweet up front with some spice on the finish. Easy sipping bourbon that fit the whole vibe of the place perfectly. What really made the night though was the staff. Everybody was friendly in that genuine way where you feel welcomed instead of "served." By the end of the night it honestly felt like we had been there before, even though it was our first visit. The outdoor setup deserves some love too. Bend cooled down at night, but the fire pits and heaters kept everything comfortable. We could have easily stayed another couple hours just hanging out. Pricing felt fair for the quality of drinks and atmosphere. This is not a dive bar pretending to be fancy. It is a genuinely cool cocktail spot that knows exactly what it is. If you are in Bend and enjoy craft cocktails, bourbon, cool music, quirky atmosphere, and places with personality, go find San Simón. Half the fun is finding it tucked down the alley in the first place.
