What was most concerning was the lack of genuine spiritual relation of music to service. Bursting into a chorus line version of "Amen" after greeting others was just hokey. Then the male leader sang a song during the holy elements of communion that was more of a love song to his latino partner than reflective prayer to music. Then at offering time the pipe organ opens up playing "Here comes the sun." Strike 2 1/2 and then a special song by the pianist following the offering that felt more like a lounge act than a moment of spiritual relation or Christ reflection. Fail. Epic fail. Nice elements was greeting others, the doxology on the pipe organ and the one rare glimpse of genuine from the elder lady speaking before communion elements were distributed--and how nice that the Lord's supper at the Christian church is open to all. So sweet and real. In this visit the negative outweighed the positive and that was before the sermon. I left. That's why you've got 20 people in 200 person sanctuary on Sunday. Change and ignite a Holy Spirit / Christ driven service or just keep doing what you're doing and close. I hate to say that I do NOT recommend this church.

As I walked through the outdoor corridors, I felt so much warmth and couldn't help the tears. I was emotional the entire service. The community is so filled with love and open arms. Beautiful views of the Texas Hill Country surround. The service feels so soul nourishing as well. There's time for silence and the Eucharist. In the community is truly affirming and accepting of all. There is a genuine sense that the clergy truly care for everyone who walks through those doors and the community around them. A huge plus for us is the children's ministry. Our daughter has grown so much in the knowledge of God and is building a little community of her own with the other kids. We are so grateful for that. This church was for many years comprised of only two demographic slices: young UT students and…read moreelderly locals. The students were here in Austin without a car and this church was one of a smattering of churches within walking distance of UT campus. The demographic dichotomy was very evident when I trod the halls of the church. Few married couples and fewer with small kids. At most churches the sound of babies crying during the pastor monologue is a given and most preachers are okay with that, given the attitude Christ himself had about children and ministry to them. Probably not the right word--since it implies a deliberate planned action-- but some of the church's "old timers" will tell you it was "commandeered" by a committed clique of members in the 90s when a recently ordained deacon "self-outed" himself. But from what I understand, the then pastor now pastor emeritus secluded himself and after pouring over the Bible he discovered that homosexuality was not a bar to being a deacon. Of course, the emeritus pastor was for most of the young single students only tangentially relevant to their affiliation with the church. At that time a young PhD [in journalism], Tom Westbrook, exerted a strong dynamic Christocentric servant leadership over his campus ministry to students. He was a graduate of a Texas Baptist seminary in Ft Worth whereas the senior man was a Princeton seminary grad. Tom never wanted anyone to call him Dr Westbrook. And so he was merely Tom to the students whereas the senior man was forever merely "Dr B" Long story short once the gay deacon flap erupted (mid 90s) and the church senior pastor decided the church would be welcoming affirming accepting etc, the remaining crowd of young Biblical sexuality traditionalists decamped to other churches. So the church developed even a more intense almost Unitarian affirmation/celebration of not just old twentieth century homosexuality but all the current alphabet variations as well. The old original gay deacon controversy seems now in 2025 to be quite quaint. That man is still in attendance and I would encourage you to go to the church's Youtube channel and listen to him on the "Queer Faith Story" podcast. You have to recall that in the 90s gays weren't allowed to marry though the deacon and his then partner had been committed to each other for a good while. Like most gay male couples whom I've known, they have adopted a "special needs" child. This church has not done so much to be a "sending church" or replicated itself with church plants, so in that regard it's good that they have served as a magnet or fly paper for non heterosexual Christians. The defeat of the heterosexual traditionalist faction is I hope today used as a case study in church leadership/stewardship. Tom W decamped to Oklahoma and pastored a church in Stillwater and landed a prof gig at OSU. From my time at the church, I don't recall anything akin to the modern Men's Ministry, and as far as I know the pastor currently has no elder board of overseers to whom she/he/they must be accountable. Given all we now know about "closeted gays" at Kanakuk Kamp, or in Boy Scout leadership, or in the Catholic priesthood, perhaps everyone is best served with openly gay folks not having to put up a fake hetero front. I've never heard anyone speak of child molestation or sexual assault done to any young folks at UBC I think this church likely survives on donations from gay friendly groups nationwide. Combine that with their semester revenue from their nearby parking lot, they likely bring in quite a bundle. The Drag building was designed early in the 20th century. It very much reminds me of the historic buildings in Cuba long since abandoned by those who built or maintained them

I've never had an experience worse then I had at this church. My daughter was baptized at this…read morechurch and needless to say I will never go back. The father is SO unnecessarily RUDE. The office is not organized at all and apparently doesn't know what they're doing. They lost our paperwork the first time I tried scheduling her baptism, and the second time I was given the wrong information. I scheduled the baptism for 12:30 and when we got there, the father was rude to everyone telling us we were late and that it should've started at 12. I called to confirm earlier in the week and was told again 12:30, never got a receipt or any kind of paperwork from the office so it seems like they just make stuff up as they go. They gave her certificate to somebody else so i had to find that after as well. The ceremony lasted maybe 5 minutes and the whole time the father was rushing and RUDE to everyone. My whole family noticed it, it was so embarrassing. He didn't bless anything for us because he told us he had things to do after the ceremony which was already a red flag, but then stayed after to clean the entire church and didn't seem in any kind of rush afterwards. Even while scheduling and asking questions with the father, his attitude was very ugly and did not make me or anyone else in my family feel welcomed. He barely even acknowledged my daughter and it was her ceremony. Everything about my experience was terrible. This was supposed to be a special sacred day and because of the father and his incompetent parish, I will remember it as a disappointment. I don't believe he deserves to be there, I feel he needs to be replaced. He is a disgrace to the Catholic Church. As somebody doing God's work, he sure is very hypocritical.
