I liked the John Gillum branch more than the Hancock branch because fewer kids attended story time. Less kids means less chance of me getting sick and catching colds from other kids. Miss Celia, native Californian, is really caring and great with all the toddlers. This location is also clean and tidy at all times. read more

This is a cute little neighbourhood library. I came here to study, and there were some tables to sit and work at, although the few seats were occupied when more people started coming around 5pm. There were screaming children, which I would anticipate at the central library but am not used to in a neighbourhood library. I cannot comment on the books as I did not browse them, but this was an alright place to work. The chair was not ergonomic as it was difficult to sit in a comfortable position. read more

I am fairly new to the Austin Public Library system as I had been living in Hutto. But, I have to say of the branches I have visited thus far, this one is hands down my favorite! It has a book return drop box, so you can return outside library hours or if you just don't have the time to go inside. I also love the facility itself. It looks new and is very well kept, no clutter or books/DVDs/CDs strewn about. I also like that the "quiet" rule seems to be enforced here as there were not unruly children running around unsupervised or talking on cell phones as I have witnessed in other branches. There is a self-checkout console and the holds pickup section is quick and easy, so you can be in an out in a flash! But, I must say, the people here are what make the big difference for me! All of the library staff here that I have interacted with have been very kind, helpful, and seemed to be in a genuine jovial mood! read more

This library is less than 5 minutes away from my house and I come here all the time! I love the assortment of books, but I think what's really impressed me is the film series hosted by one of the staff members. Each month, he picks a theme and plays two movies within that theme. So far, I have loved every single movie I have attended and I'm very excited for all of the future films to watch! The popcorn is just the cherry on top, but also not really because popcorn and cherries don't go all that well together. Needless to say, it is an incredible benefit and I am thankful for it! It's also a great place to bring kids for some afternoon book reading and I have spent hours here picking out and reading books. It's nice that they have couches and tables for that, because we don't always want to bring them home and it's a great afterschool activity for me to get P excited about reading. I have also checked out several books and films for myself, including reserving them. It is incredibly quick and easy and everyone on staff has been so friendly so far. As far as libraries go, this one isn't too big, but it is a part of the Austin Public Library Network, which means there are a lot of books in circulation between the many locations. I've not had any difficulty requesting a book to be brought to the location, although if there are multiple requests before yours you may have a bit of a wait. The library of my hometown was multiple stories high and often served as a refuge from the rest of the world and reality, so even though this one is considerably smaller, it's already making me feel right at home. read more

I was informed there's a Summer Prize book and the librarian took time out to help identify the best book my daughter would like most (she wasn't with me at the time). This library looks amazing! And it's a green building as well. It was a nice day today so I sat out in their little patio in front & ate my lunch on the thoughtfully provided metal chairs and table. Not all APL branches have outdoor areas like this - I am grateful this one does. Afterwards, I went in and stocked up on a whole bagful of books. And picked up a few free magazines from their giveaway pile. Note: Their parking lot tends to fill up quickly, in part because there is no on-street parking on either side of Steck Avenue. A few times, I've pulled into the absolute last parking space available and thanked my lucky stars. read more

I've been visiting this library for over a decade now, and it is one of my favorite places on earth. Such a quiet and calming space.

I love libraries. I really do. But sometimes I just don't want to deal with people. Enter the North Village Branch self checkout area. With a flick of your library barcode and a solid, thorough scanning of your books and DVDs you will most likely walk out the door without having to interact with anyone except the automatic door at the entrance. Except when you don't, the alarm goes off, and then the people at the front desk stare at you as though you're trying to steal their books. More likely, they're frustrated that their system doesn't work/you are too incompetent to make it work yourself - which makes you doubt your awesomeness if only for a few minutes. Pros about this branch: Huge overhead lighting, lots of tables to bring your laptop for when your power goes out, giant DVD selection, clean restrooms, drive-through book drops! Cons: Feel like I'm going to be forced to shelf read for checking out my books poorly. Flashbacks to copy cataloging. Okay, those aren't really cons for most people. This is a great branch. read more

The library part is good, but we need more study space. Whenever I go the desks are full or almost full. Also, can we please have a quiet place shut off from the rest of the library? I'm glad there's a place for kids to go to, but I'd appreciate it if they weren't running around loudly in the library. To be fair this tends to happen after 3 ish when school is let out. I've also been approached by men a couple of times, trying to talk to me when I'm clearly trying to study. Not necessarily the library's fault but I think it's good to know. read more

I must admit, I don't spend much time looking for items in this library, but I go pick up items almost every week. Let me explain, with the Austin Public Library system you can request ANY book, audio book, CD, DVD, etc. to be deliver to ANY library. Isn't that cool? You just go load up your "holds" on your account and then go pick them up when they email you that they are ready. It's changed my life. Also, the people that work at this branch are super nice. I like that they don't talk in hushed tones. Every time I walk out of this place I'm smiling. read more

Lots of parking for the area it's in... Very, very clean. And friendly staff! The library itself could be bigger (I'm used to the ginormous public libraries in North Dallas). BUT, it's cute & generally speaking, there aren't a TON of people so you can usually find a place to read. Also, watch the hours!!! They fluctuate during the week & are open pretty late, so don't get caught stuck outside! As with all the Austin Public Libraries, feel free to renew your books online (pretty sweet!) & also check out the e-books they offer. YES, you can download library books to read on your Kindle, Ipad, Nook... or just your plain ol' computer! read more

Found some good books here and then made the mistake requesting a book from another branch. They of course said they would notify me when it was available. I noticed three weeks later online that my account was "delinquent" due to an unclaimed book and a subsequent charge to my account. I not only found this interesting due to the book never being in my possession but also since I was never notified the book arrived at the branch (i.e. I never received an email at the address they had on file). My advice to others is be careful of their practices and watch them closely. read more

I like this library because it's bicycle distance from my house. APL's wonderful policy of shipping anything in their network to the branch of your choosing means that I have all of APL's collection bicycle distance from my house. This particular branch, while very small, has really great staff that have always been very pleasant to interact with. I've never actually looked around at the books that are stored here as everything I've ever wanted didn't appear available at this branch in the online catalog. I think the hold shelf is seriously where it's at for this branch. If you're in 78757, check it out - awesome branch! read more

What a nice, clean, quiet little library. I dropped in yesterday to see what my new neighborhood library was like, and was very pleasantly surprised. I like the way it's laid out, and it's very bright. I wasn't planning on getting any books, but of course that didn't quite work out ;). I immediately found something in fiction that I'd been meaning to read, then browsed the non fiction and came across two art books and a history on jewelry I needed to read. So I left happily with 10 lbs of books, and a good feeling. This branch is a good fit, and I plan to visit often! read more

I love North Village Branch! I can't really put my finger on what it is about it, but I feel very loyal to this location. This is a small but busy branch, and it has a good selection, especially for its size. The librarians are always helpful if I need anything, and they are always polite (sometimes even very friendly) and efficient (much to their credit, as they always seem extremely busy) at the main desk. Most of the books I end up wanting are housed at other branches, so I use the book transfer system extensively. I've never had any issues whatsoever, and when I do "window shop" this library, I always leave with something good. I will second previous reviews that their DVD selection is good. I don't use these services, but the computers and desk space look to be all occupied when I drop in, in case you're considering going here for those reasons. read more

I love the new location! And I love that with the library system I can put holds on items and then pick them up at my local library when they are available. I've only been to a few but this is my favorite ATX library branch so far. It's the perfect size, it's very clean, and has a friendly staff. It has plenty of desks and couches for reading and working. It also has a nice sized parking lot. There's a drive-thru book drop and a walk-up book drop located right outside the front door for after hour drop offs. Inside, there are self-scanners for checking out books. You can also scan your library card for account details (due dates, fees, etc. ). I'm a huge fan of checking out e-books via my Kindle but it's so nice having a good place to go to when you need a physical book or DVD. read more

I hate leaving ANY of the Austin libraries a bad mark. And while the new library is fancy and shiny, the repeated staff errors at this branch have earned it a low rating. Last year, a frazzled librarian kinda-sorta reprimanded me for not using the drop box outside to return my materials. "I don't have time to check those in," he said pointing at the front door. "There is a drop box outside," Not wanting to cause a problem, I slunk out and complied. God forbid I hold up the line checking materials in! On three different occasions within the last year, books turned into the slot have gone missing for days, and in one case weeks, at a time. The last time I took a photo of all my books seconds before dropping in the slot as an insurance policy in case one went missing. Which it did. For about a month. Luckily, it finally turned up because the branch manager informed me that my photographic proof was not compelling evidence. As if I sit around take pictures of library materials in some grand scheme to thieve a $7 book from the city. Additionally, I've overheard the staff grousing on numerous occasions. . I was hoping once they moved from the old Burnet location to the new fancy Steck location that the *attitude* would get lost in the shuffle. But alas, alack...no such luck. It's just not pleasant to go in there I blame myself for giving them a second, and yes, a third chance but it's close to my house and I just thought "how hard is it to scan in books?" *BEEP* There. Just like that. Yarborough and Old Quarry have it down. "Here. I'm turning these in." BEEP, BEEP, BEEP. "Thanks." And YB and OQ librarians are friendly. And helpful. I don't know what is up at this branch. I think they are too busy gossiping and complaining to pay attention to the task at hand. Hopefully these bad apples will get culled from the barrel. But in the meantime do yourself a favor: DON'T USE THE DROP SLOT AT THIS LOCATION. Turn your books in by hand and then check to make sure they have been expunged from your account. read more

Lovely, bright, clean crisp atmosphere. This library is not even a year old. It has the charms of a small accessible library, with all the ammenities of an Internet cafe. Nice place to go and browse all your favorite periodicals, check out a good book, and spend some time in a non-commercial space. read more

Not a very large library, but eco-friendly, in fact, it even has special parking for hybrid drivers. The stock of books may be a little smaller than some of the other area locations, but it is constantly updated so it easier to get the most recently released books here. The staff is superfriendly and the layout is easy to figure out. Additionally, they always have some community gathering/event occurring so it is easy to get involved. read more

Beautiful building, the high windows really make this a nice place to be during the day. Although I've never gone there solely to read or study, there's always plenty of people in there taking advantage of the space, and it makes me really want to join them. In the evening, the building looks like a lantern from the outside, lit up with the many rectangular windows. This is not the most friendly branch I've been to, but the spacious layout, high ceiling make it a joy to enter. It seems most public libraries in Austin usually have a somewhat limited in house collection. But the interlibrary loan ("hold") aspect more than makes up for it. read more

This branch is very bright, colorful, airy, and alive. Families come here to read together; the staff is always buzzing around and answering questions; and, the CD/DVD selection is well done. They've done a great job at making the space feel like a book store in that you can grab a book and then sit in one of the comfy chairs floating around. The kids' area is colorful and very much caters to a kid's perspective, which gives them a special boost of confidence. There's also plenty of computers, as well as tables with outlets in the center of the table for easy use. The one con is that the selection is no where near as great as at other branches. This is due to the open, spacious design, it seems. the shelves have lots of space on them, though, so I hope they fill out some day! read more

From the moment I walked in to when I left the noise in here was ridiculous. Kids running around and shouting. Parents who just didn't care. Very loud and distracting. Worst of all when I asked the librarian if was always so loud she blew it off and said they allow talking voices in the library. It was more like a daycare center in my opinion. Staff just ignored the problem. Sadly, not the only time it's been like this but noteworthy today. Please act like you're in a library! read more

For its size it has a great collection of books and the staff is friendly & helpful. The only reason it didn't rate five stars was the problem with the book return drop box. After the third time they failed to scan in a book I stopped using it. I was able to find the books on the shelf so I wasn't fined but still.... Best to bring your books to the desk & watch them scan it in. Otherwise, this branch is pretty perfect. read more
