I love our library! Despite being an older building, it is very well maintained and feels like a…read morenew structure. It offers a special teen section where anyone can peruse for a book, but only teens can sit and enjoy the dimmed and subdued atmosphere. This is quite the opposite for the bright and open children's section with a massive offering of books for the littles, ages 0 and up. Board books, picture books, short bed time stories, classic fairy tales, and the longer fare you might remember from elementary and middle school. Also with on this section, you will find a large meeting space for groups and readings, and a smaller play room you can book for play dates or just to get your gaggle of kids out of the house. They also sponsor the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program as a push to promote parent involvement in their kids' early literacy. I haven't used the facility's other meeting rooms and study carousels, but they have much to offer the community.

From the very first time I contacted Paul, I was completely overwhelmed, confused, and with zero idea where to start--he greeted me with genuine patience and warmth. He didn't just point me to a form or a book and send me on my way. Instead, he told me what he needed from me and set up the entire expungement paper to sign and file and my non disclosure paperwork as well. He explained everything in plain English, answered every single question I had--no matter how basic or repetitive--and carefully guided me step by step through the paperwork, filings, and procedures. His communication was outstanding: clear, responsive, and always followed up to make sure I understood the next steps. What really stood out, though, was how much he truly cared. He treated my situation with compassion and respect, never making me feel small or foolish for not knowing the system. In a world that can feel cold and bureaucratic, he was a bright light--patient, encouraging, and dedicated to making sure I could successfully represent myself. He is honestly one of those rare people who make the world a better place just by showing up and doing their job with such humanity and excellence. I've been coming here over the past year to study and use the law books. It's a very quiet library…read moreand a great place to study undisturbed. Some of the books are quite old and you have to be super careful handling them. I've always had really great success when asking the law librarians for assistance. I'm not a fan of where the computers are located, it's a bit cramped and it's not a work station you're really able to spread out at. This law library also hosts free CLE courses once a month. They do have very limited hours of operation though which is difficult to comply with when you have a full time job.

I visited the physical building a few years ago out of curiosity. Fast forward to 2020, and I need…read moreto do legal research: the pandemic has caused the closure of government buildings, but I didn't despair, because this library has online services. The online law library has access to databases that you may not get free on your own. These resources opened doors for my research and inspired my creativity! Visiting the physical library requires me to take a couple of buses, but who knows, after the pandemic is over, I would like to visit the physical building in its splendor, when the opportunity presents itself. I love law libraries, so I love these resources. This law library didn't knock my socks off yet, but it rocks enough to earn 4 stars!

As this was listed as the oldest continuous operating library in Texas we of course, had to stop…read morein. Not much going on this trip but it was cool to see, pretty big place and looks great. They had several floors and 2 people running the desk. The outside was amazing to look at and is a very nice building. The children and teen section is right after you come in, there are stairs and an elevator, each floor is something different. The Fiction section is quite large and has a very large stage at the front, not sure what it is used for normally but it was a cool feature. Had some comfy chairs up there. One the floor with the fiction there was a large computer room, fully empty, First time I have seen no computers in use at a library. Even Shana remarked on that. They do allow you to use a paid for by the library Ancestry account to search family history. They had displays of books, most with themes along all the window ledges. There were two offices in this area as well, both with open doors, no one in them and signs saying library staff only. We did head up to the 3rd floor which claimed to be fireplace sitting but everything up there was closed and locked. Access was not denied, no sign nor roped off but all you could get to was a microwave. It felt like is was supposed to be closed off but someone forgot? We don't live here, so no library card but it was cool to see the place. The front desk person we spoke to wasn't super helpful, Shana asked about the age and if it was the oldest and they thought so but seemed very unsure and seemed to think it weird we stopped in. Not rude or dismissive just more confused, like they don't normally get questions or visitors. Still if you like history, old buildings, libraries, or any combination of the three, this is worth a quick look and walkthrough. Judging by the state and fireplace rooms they do some cool stuff here now and then so keep an eye out for that.

Touchdown, baby! So…read morewhat does the Austin Public Library do with all of the books and records that they don't think they need anymore? They liquidate them at the future location of the Twin Oaks branch, formerly the Post Office. I scored big, as they sold me an entire box of books of my choice for only five dollars. I scored a Norton anthology, a New York Public Library Desk Reference and a whole bunch of other worthwhile books for next to nothing. I actually felt like I was picking up books for free after I'd bagged the first few. Every now and again, they have the Monster Book Sale (watch the library events calendar for that) and the prices are higher then, but they have a lot more to choose from. Otherwise, they offer this outrageous deal on the leftovers. "Keep Austin Reading!"

Wonderful space filled with 8 million books plus the writing center, an incredible map room…read morelearning labs and different programs that the general public are welcome to attend. There are desk top computers available to use, printing services.. A lot of students come here to study. The 2nd and 5th floors are collaborative floors, meaning you can talk , also there are plenty of white boards available to write on. Floors 3, 4 & 5 are traditional quiet library floors with desks and tables available for study. The staff are amazing and available to help you find a book or answer your questions.

PCL. Pretty Chinese…read moreLibrary. Pretty Creepy Library. Pretty Crappy Library. All of those names accurately describe the PCL. Pretty Chinese Library. You see, often the library feels like a little part of Asia has landed on the UT campus. (see Google Maps for South Asia Institute). In fact, several Asian friends have admitted to coming to the PCL when feeling homesick. Pretty Creepy Library. The dim lights. The constantly running water fountains. The frigid temperatures rivaling the nearest morgue. The voice, for christ sakes. THE PCL VOICE! I know I'm not the only one that feels this way. Pretty Crappy Library. Entering this place is like visiting the 70's. Limited plugs. Uncomfortable chairs. Weird, boxy cubicles. Somewhat practical, but it sure as hell aint pretty. What you should know: Enter on the 2nd floor. Now, before entering you get a choice on how to enter. Are you feeling pretty and adventurous? Take the revolving doors. Practical and pissed. Take the normal doors. How about wasteful and lazy? Yep, the automatic doors. Now, Prufrock's is on the left. Coffee is effective, coffee drinks are meh, food is awful. But if the bald guy is working, just leave. He has an attitude. 1st floor: There's supposedly a map collection down here that people RAVE about. I like this floor, but it does have a basement feel to it. 2nd floor: Computers and collaborative study lounges. Elevator: You will stop on every floor. 3rd floor: Quiet, but empty. So you can get away with a lot. 4th floor: Quiet, but more crowded. Too serious. 5th floor: Collaborative study floor. No work is done here. 6th floor: The most recently renovated floor. Lots of plugs. Quiet, but not too quiet. A lot gets done here. It's actually the Perry Casteneda Library, in case you were wondering.
