Recent data released shows that every year they treat on average 80,000 people with 20,000 receiving chemotherapy and another 6,500 receiving radiotherapy , it's reassuring that we have so many dedicated professionals who have taken there vocation to another level and I'm my mind Cancer should not be a word to be scared of, it has been proven time and time again that this terrible disease is curable and the doctors think they will have it contained to a very high level in the next 15 / 20 years if not earlier than that and are confident they will beat it all together all I can say is I feel lucky to be living in these Islands and thank goodness for the wonderful National Health Service.

I have visited the RAH, as it is known, three times in the past three years, all to visit babies which had just been born in the hospital. The maternity ward is bright, clean and modern with good facilities. I also have to complement the hospital's parking; I have managed to get a space close to the building every time I have visited.

When entering you are immediately overwhelmed by 2 things depending on the time of day. Its either light airy and peaceful or complete bedlam. That is because it was decided to make the main outpatients dept in the central atrium as its know. At night you will also find the Glasgow out of hours service located here which I dont feel is right to have it right in the middle of a childrens hospital. There is a small aroma coffee shop just inside the main entrance but that is all you will find here food wise apart from a few vending machines. The main canteen and other food outlets and shops are located over in the adult hospital. There is a link corridor that you can access the adult side without having to go outside. Whilst this is a lovely shiny and bright hospital I personally feel that it does not have the same feeling and personality as the old yorkhill.

The attitude of the canteen staff was disgusting she was spoken to in a hostile manner as she asked what size of cup the coffee came in and left the canteen in tears. I hate to think of somebody with a child that is dying going into that canteen and being spoken to like that. This time, I was sent to Victoria Hospital. It was fairly easy to get to, with both train and bus stops near by. I took the bus to get here and it was an easy hop off and back on kind of stop right near the hospital. Walking up, I'm not sure if it was the day or what, but it's very peaceful in the area, I even mentioned it to my guy when walking up. There is a nice little sculpture garden which just adds to the niceness of the place. The building is quite new (not sure how new) but some of the hospitals I've been in around here are surely much older than this one. The entrance is quite open and bright and there is a wee cafe just to the left where patients and visitors alike can enjoy a cuppa. There are signs posted everywhere, so it's quite easy to find where you're going, even though I did get lost coming out, but I was eventually guided to where I needed to go. The staff are friendly and I was in and out with not too much of a wait. I'm always early anyway, so I expect to wait a tiny bit either way. I'm not a huge fan of hospitals (who is anyway), but this one is quite nice.

Only waited about 15 minutes and was taken back for the procedure. The nurse practitioner and her staff were great. I opted for the sedation because I'm kind of whimpy. Easy procedure. This is due to a few friend's having grandparents either currently living in here, or having had lived in here at some stage. The major appeal of this nursing home is that it is local and in a residential area e.g. not off the motorway somewhere far, far away which requires a car to reach without two and a half hours on public transport. Therefore, the location of this makes it extremely easy for family living relatively close by to pop in when it suits them (to a certain extent) and without too much time and hassle spent on travelling. The other attractive element of this that is also related to the location is the fact that it is in a nice, residential building. It has relatively large windows, eye catching timber work which is prettily painted and red stand stone. As for the service and price for their care - the service is much as you'd expect in any nursing home with small individual rooms as well as a few communal areas for recreational actives and dinning. Meanwhile, the prices are that bit extra due to the location, building and pretty (and comfortable) interior.

My gran was in ward 2b of Crosshouse hospital with a broken hip. Although the hip was healing fine gran had other complications which they seemed ill-equipped to deal with. We found the staff to be uncaring, unprofessional, uninterested and downright unsympathetic to my grans needs. If you asked for help with something they were too busy, but they seemed to have time to congregate and talk about what they were doing at the weekend. My gran was very poorly and did not receive the care she deserved, she has since sadly died. I had a kind of rosy picture of what nursing was like but the nurses in that ward seemed just to be pen pushers, too busy with paperwork and not enough time looking after the sick. I found the staff very obnoxious, the nurses and the auxiliaries, with one nurse in particular called Kathryn who seemed full of her own importance and would give incorrect information on the phone saying things like my gran had a good night, is fine this morning etc. but when my mum went in she found that gran had had the opposite kind of night. It is just so unacceptable that relatives are told this rubbish and totally unacceptable to treat patients in this way. I am so sad at my gran's treatment in ward 2b. it has been a terrible time for our family that my grans last days were so awful for her.

If you're waiting to see someone about any of the community services, you take a numbered ticket from a dispenser and wait until called over to one of the windows at the large table over on the right. Unfortunately there are no chairs so you'll have to stand. Beyond this area, there is a separate reception desk for people wanting to visit a doctor, nurse or therapist. Here you can queue to speak to the receptionist or, if you have an appointment, you can check yourself in using a touch-screen on the wall (it's very easy add date of birth and touch buttons 'yes' or 'no' to get confirmation. It will also state if there is a delay). Everyone seems really friendly and helpful here, from the receptionists to the doctors and nurses. It's a clean and spacious modern building with a seating area where you can read a magazine and wait your turn. There's a large free car park right outside too.

Parking beside these smaller buildings can be a problem as there isn't much space. The main hospital building is modern and swish with a reasonably trendy but not very well stocked coffee bar on the bottom floor. Hairmyres Train station, which is about a five minute walk from the main building, serves trains to Glasgow every half hour.
