In fact, the next morning when I needed a quick breakfast, I went back from a smoked salmon sandwich and it was beautiful. We stayed at the Marriott Grand Place and were looking for a nice cup of espresso. As we walked down the road we found this small corner bakery on the corner and were induced to enter. They are known for their meringues and Merveilleux; a meringue coated in chocolate whipped cream covered with shavings of dark chocolate. While I am not a huge meringue fan, these are the BEST I have ever tried. Highly recommend at least sitting down for an espresso and a meringue. Stopped in at around 10 on a Saturday morning to grab a few items. It had caught our eye another day because you can watch them making the pastries in the window. We tried a merveilleaux (small cake) and a cramique (Belgian brioche). The merveilleaux was too sweet for me but it's nice that it's small. The best place for tea time/coffee time in Brussels, Belgium. The service was very thorough and such friendly staff. The ambiance is very inviting. We were seated nicely in the middle booth area. The cakes are decadent and they have many flavors. I loved the pistachio most especially and salted caramel. I loved this place so much we came back again the next day and even took a take out. The first place I passed by after exiting the Brussels Midi station, and couldn't resist entering because the smell of the bread was so good. We got a chocolate baguette, which was soft and perfect to re-energize us for the morning. So what are they known for? The merveilleux, of course. They are soft, meringue cookie/pastry balls which are made fresh throughout the day by hand. We picked up a box of 6 which included one of every flavor. Between the 2 of us, we had different likes so...to each their own. These were definitely sweet. One is enough to curb your sweet tooth as they do come in different sizes. If you don't eat them right away, refrigerate to keep them fresh. They're known for their beautifully decorated meringues, and the smell of fresh bread in the morning is amazing here. Though the meringues are so pretty and appealing j felt like trying their rum raisin "pudding", which is basically a wedge of dense bread pudding. It was heavy on the rum and not too sweet, which I like. That said, I didn't love the texture - it was quite dense and probably would have been better heated up. Came across this bakery on Yelp when I was planning a trip to Belgium. I bookmarked this place right away. A merveilleux is a small cake supposedly originated in Belgium or possibly north of France. We were amazed by the artisans making the merveilleux behind the counter. We got the sample box with 6 different mini merveilleux: dark chocolate, white chocolate, coffee, cherry, hazelnuts and caramel. The meringe and the whipped cream were light and delicate. The cakes were recommended to be refrigerated within 3 hours and served within 24 hours when we were there early June. We ate them in 10 minutes as soon as we left the store. I'm on a budget so I got one of their small pastries- forgot name, but see picture. It was 1.30(?) ish. And it was a perfect sweet afternoon snack! It was so light and fluffy, i almost forgot i was eating it at one point. I'd definitely get the bigger one, even if it's just for you! Totally worth it. If, during a trip to Belgium, the only sweet things you eat are waffles and chocolate then you will miss out on Aux Merveilleux de Fred and that would be too sad. Fortunately, if you even walk past it you'll probably know immediately that you have to visit. They make meringue based treats, coated in delicately flavoured whipped cream and decorated with chocolate and nuts. The resulting cakes are light, sweet and delicious as well as beautiful. You can buy them in a few sizes, a regular size that is a good treat for one, or a bunch of miniatures in a box that would be perfect to share with a group. They also do proper sized cakes and if ever I find myself in Brussels on my birthday I will be demanding one of these with a candle in it. There is always a queue, but it's worth the wait. I panicked all the way along the queue, being unable to choose which cake I wanted and eventually randomly selected The Incroyable - meringue, speculoos biscuit and whipped cream with shaved white chocolate and a swirl of dark chocolate ganache to top it. Off to a late start on Saturday, though still earlier than many places in Brussels business district open on weekends, it was through an unlocked door that entry was made to Aux Merveilleux de Fred, and although the two young women at the counter at first seemed shocked by my presence their confusion soon turned to smiles with the eventual agreement that they would sell some meringues 45 minutes prior to opening provided I "kept it a secret" and paid in cash since the credit card system had not yet been turned on. Walking away chuckling, the whole scene quite bizarre, a bit of background on Aux Merveilleux de Fred shows the house to have grown from the work of a young man based out of Hazebrouck in 1982 and now with several stores ranging from Europe to New York City the phrase "meringue" really does a disservice to the levity of Frederic Vaucamp's creations, a box of six costing €9 with a total weight of perhaps 180g all inclusive. Truly a work of art, time and patience, any who have made meringue aware of how quickly soft peaks can turn stiff, Aux Merveilleux de Fred offers several flavors including classics and seasonal options, the eponymous creation turning Dark Chocolate into a 'sense' more than a simple flavor while the "Incroyable" takes Belgium's signature cookie direct to the palate almost bypassing the teeth or tongue, a perfect sort of smoothness similarly noted whether featuring the flavor of Fruit, Coffee, Caramel or Nuts. read more

Simply passing the shop is hard enough. The artists at work making these beautiful confections do so in front of huge bay windows. It's easy to just stop and watch for awhile, and then that awhile turns into a purchase of several little merveilleux (cakes). Surprisingly, I didn't run into this confection all that much. Essentially a meringue cake with whipped covering and chocolate, strawberry, or nuts rolled on top. Is very much a unique type of cake dating back to the 18th century. All in all I think this stacks up to being a very small meringue cake nonetheless. So if you are someone who loves light but sugary treats, this is not one to be missed. I'm sure they get really tired of the countless tourists gawking at them, but hopefully not the money? I always saw a line to the shop no matter what whenever it was open. Little kids watching each passing naked meringue or how they expertly created each... not to mention just watching them roll them in nuts and chocolate will make you run inside. They have a nice payment system that allows you to just drop the money in at the register without much fuss. Tell the staff which flavor you'd like and then quickly pay in cash. Don't bother with card if you aren't making a large purchase. These items aren't as expensive in singles. Just be sure to have cash if you're not planning on purchasing a lot since they won't take the card otherwise. The sweets are lite, airy, sugary, with a bit of a mousse texture with added bits of crunch from dry meringue. I think they are okay to eat slowly, but I was afraid it'd become too soggy from the cream. Either way very delicious! read more

Since they open early I stopped by and ordered a chocolate brioche for breakfast. The smell before reaching the store was wonderful as everything was just freshly come out of the oven. I finally decided to try out the mini Magnifique merveilleux. I normally don't like meringue, but the meringue was extremely light and delicious. The cream was also very good, and the praline coating provided a nice crunch. They also have little boxes where you can buy a sampling box of multiple flavors. Amaze balls. Literally amazing balls. We were doing our tourist thing in the area when this little corner store caught our eye for two reasons. One, the outside and inside decor is adorable. Two, there was a line out the door and around the corner (but it moves fast). Well we had to get on this line to see what the fuss is about. Spoiler alert the fuss is pastries, delicious soft fluffy adorable puff pastries. The glass cases are just lined with them. I randomly ordered two based on color and cuteness and we ate them while strolling through the rest of our afternoon. I'm not really sure how to describe their signature item - it's like a ball of whipped fluff, coated with tiny but pieces. I had never had anything like it before.
