This place is deceitful in how it conducts business, and I would caution anyone who is considering going here. When I called to make an appointment, I told them which services I was interested in and my problem areas are. I was told that I'd be booked with the esthetician that was most knowledgeable and experienced in the treatments I wanted to have done. (I can't recall her name.) On the day of the appointment, I paid my consultation fee of what I believe was $150. When I met with the esthetician, I told her what my concerns were. She then told me that she does not do one of the treatments, and would have to refer me to another doctor (who did not work in that office), for the second procedure, and that he charges a separate consultation fee. The next day I called to speak with the manager. I explained exactly what had happened and that I wanted a refund. The office manager apologized and said that I could get a credit for the consultation to put towards another procedure, but it would have to be with the same esthetician. I said that I wasn't interested in any of the other services. However, I would be willing to have the credit applied towards a facial. She told me she could not do that because I could only book a service with the same esthetician and that she does not do facials. I said given the circumstances I should get a refund. She refused. Then after several days, and multiple calls, they finally agreed to refund my money. The entire experience was a frustrating waste of time and money. read more

This place has seriously gone downhill & I will not be returning for a few reasons... First of all, they're asking everyone to pay them $300 per year because insurance is not covering some expenses. Also, they said that I would be able to get free laser treatments until they got this red spot off of my forehead, but actually they lied & charged me $150 last time for a laser that took less than 5 minutes. They charge $35 every time I came in there for someone to come look at my face & ask how I'm doing for a couple minutes. Melissa helped me with my appointment. I told her I wanted some volume in my forehead & also mentioned that I'm not interested in Botox. I also said that I work in Downtown & am interested in Sat appointments ~ since not many places are open. Their next Sat appointment was in December, so only for one time, I accepted a Friday appointment. Melissa said that there would be a $125 consultation but if I opt for treatment, it would be allocated to that. This was a major deal for me; I don't make plastic surgery or dermatology appointments. I made it through the crazy afternoon traffic. I was seen by a lady with an Eastern European accent. There was a level of insincerity to her niceness as I explained what I wanted done. She tells me what I had explained to Melissa: "Botox won't fix your problem; you need injections & I don't do that! You need to see doctor so & so but he's gone!" When I sounded upset, she said: "the person who was supposed to see you called in sick. I am doing her a favor." I said, that's not cool; someone should've called me to reschedule so I wouldn't drive all the way here ~ only to find out I'm not being seen & not getting the treatment I specifically had discussed with Melissa. Then, she gives me a name of a woman in the Beverly Hills who is the best at what I need. Well, I called that office, and that lady only works two days a week on Tuesday & Wednesday. Yes, I'm glad I didn't have to fork out $125 and my hellacious visit was at no charge. One other thing that bugged me about the place was looped videos (The Doctors with young participants) magazines... seem to cater only to very young people! The team at AVA MD is wonderful! On my visit, everyone was kind and courteous. They also all seemed genuinely warm and cared about me and my skin concerns. They managed all of this even with the new mask and social distancing rules in place! :) I'm very happy with the service I received (milia extractions) and I plan to return as needed and happily recommend them to anyone for care. My skin looks so much better now! I'd been to my HMO dermatologist for my skin before, but they didn't help me. They poo-pooed my concerns and basically said if it wasn't skin cancer I shouldn't be concerned. It's sad to say, but you are judged by your appearance so looking your best is important. They didn't even tell me what it was (my acne looking bumps that never went away) and I was left to figure it out. I'd been unhappy with my skin for years, then my friend recommended AVA MD. I'm so glad that I went! I received fast and excellent service that was well worth the cost. My AVA MD Dr. and assistant were amazing! The AVA MD staff were all very thoughtful and when I was booking my follow up appointment and trying to choose a day, they told me which days my Dr was in the office so that I'd be sure to see the same physician. She is one of the smartest people I have ever met, and I work with over 300 health care professionals for my job. She cares so much for her patients, she listens to you and takes her time with every single patient. Working in the health care industry, I can tell you this is rare and so appreciated! Our skin is a huge part of are overall health, and our health manifests itself through our skin. She has taught me so much about that through her care of me as a patient. I can not recommend coming to AVA MD enough. Suddenly in my early 20's, ​I had the worst breakout in my entire life that was not going away. My dermatologist​ before was so rude about my breakout and made me feel so insecure about myself. Then I switched to AVA MD and they made me feel good about myself despite​ my red and irritated skin. Rene set me up on a new skincare regimen​ and immediately​ got me an appointment that day for a laser treatment. I started going once a week for laser treatments with Robin for about a month. My skin is now 95% clear. I have my confidence back all thanks to AVA MD. Robin made coming into the office once a week a joy and I actually really enjoyed my time there which made the laser treatment bearable​. I am so beyond thankful for AVA MD and their staff. I've been to Ava MD for several treatments and each time was better than the last. My first visit was for a hair facial. The treatment was a gift for me and I must admit to being nervous, because I have often felt a bit out of my element when I go to spas and clinics. I felt immediately at home. The staff was top notch, warm and welcoming, without the attitude that can be part of high end salon experiences. I actually enjoyed the videos in the waiting room because Dr. Shamban worked her magic on people with very serious skin problems. You could see their lives change as they got the skin they had always dreamed of. The products were amazing, the hairdresser top rate and I left with my hair looking like spun silk. I've also had several subsequent treatments for my skin, including a thorough facial cleansing and restalyne. The facial cleaned out dirt and ickiness from my face that I wasn't even aware of. I was slightly worried about the restalyne because we've all seen bad examples when too much is used or not used well. In my case, I felt the nurses really analyzed my face and only used the product where it was merited. I left looking ten years younger, with very little pain. Their products are exceptional as well. I truly see the difference when I use them regularly. I've also attended, and brought several friends with me, to their open house. Looking at the men and women there really showed me that they build relationships with the people that they treat. Plus, they give away awesome door prizes and cupcakes! Big cupcakes! Everyone on this staff was super kind and accommodating. I came in for a laser treatment, but had some anxiety about the procedure. The nurse was very understanding and explained every step of the procedure and the science behind it as well as all of the necessary after care steps and what to expect. She was even understanding when I needed a break (again, i'm a very anxious person). My skin simply glowed and the dark marks I was concerned about lightened significantly. I was looking for a new dermatologist because I moved to the west side. Ava MD had good reviews and it was covered under my insurance, so I decided to give them a shot. I am giving them one star for a couple of reasons: I think they're too expensive and their bedside manner was not too hot. I was charged for the burning off of a couple of sun damaged spots, which I should pay for, but in addition, they charged me $200 for just walking in the door. Also, the doctor spent about seven minutes with me, burning time included, and was pretty robotic. I used to see an old timer in Beverly Hills and I'm going back to him. He was a nice guy, competent and didn't overcharge. I guess Ava has to pay for the fancy lobby and marketing materials some how... read more

I feel like this office only cares about patients' money and not actually helping them meet their beauty goals. They're never on time for their appointments and they're always trying to upsell you on products. Take your services elsewhere, please! My procedure wasn't explained very thoroughly and my biggest critique: there was not a single follow up phone call until I called them 4 weeks later. My fiance and I both had disappointing/terrible experiences here with different doctors and the billing department. I can't speak to their cosmetic side of their practice (which is clearly where they specialize). A new patient comprehensive will, depending on the doctor, run you between $250 and $300. He might talk to you for 10 minutes. I ended up with a sample cream that (despite wearing sunblock over it and spending maybe 15 minutes walking outside) lead to a nasty chemical burn on my face (hooray!) and a recommendation to get monthly facials instead of, I dunno, helping me figure out how to not need monthly facials - although I was told I could go somewhere cheaper than Ava MD (thanks for the tip, doc?). The bf got over charged for services he didn't receive. I had to hound them for a week to see if a charge got taken off. At least the medication he got actually seemed to fix his issues. They don't validate parking and the lot is expensive. However, if you're just going in for a check up, it won't take that long. read more

It sums up my review of her office..."Sham" and "Ban" Let me first post the e-mail I sent to her office exactly as it was written: "I am not happy with the service I received. I was told by the person I saw last year that my treatment would last two years. I had a consultation last week and was told it only lasts 9 months to a year. I also found out that I should have been seen by the doctor after my second treatment (I was told at the time I came in after my second treatment to take pictures that the doctor was too busy to see me). Finally, at my recent consultation I learned that the pictures that were taken are completely useless in evaluating the progress of my treatment. I paid $1,300 and the treatment only lasted 9 months." The 2 treatments I had were under-eye filler. Do you know what reponse I received back from my e-mail? NOTHING! I guess Sham-Ban was too busy booking her next television appearance. The gal that is now in charge of consultations is stone cold and arrogant. She kept complaining how terrible her predecessor was. Everytime I asked a question I got a robotic one or two word response...mostly the word "No." I asked if I could see the doctor before spending another $1,300 and she told me I would have to pay $250 (mind you, this is not even Dr. Sham-Ban we're talking about...it's one of her doctor assistants). If you want to see her, it's a whole lot More Money. I told her there should be no charge since I never saw the doctor after my second treatment, but I got her favorite word.."No!" SPECTACULAR Dermatologist!! Hard to get an appointment with Ava herself unless you plan months in advance...the woman does a lot of the "Extreme Makeover" shows so she's always in demand. I've been to her many times as well as to other people in the office...all are good and know their stuff. A bonus is that her office IS The Laser Institute for Dermatology at St. John's Medical Center...it's a spa AND an clinic. They offer up facials along with the traditional Botox, Collagen and the like (if yer into that sorta thing). I highly recommend the facials...you can even get a half hour one as a pick me up...they're medical style facials so a bit more clinical and to the point than a spa but it's for the benifit of your SKIN, not your mind. read more

This office was able to accommodate me exactly on the date needed! Thank you so much. Second, Brittany who is amazing saw me and helped me with another issue I had for a while an inflamed cyst on the back of my neck. She guided through the process of draining it, waiting to calm down a d finally having the doctor here remove it. Everyone here is extremely nice and knowledgeable. Been seeing Dr. Shamban and her PA (or NP?) Christine for about 5 years now, since before she started appearing on Extreme Makeover, Tyra, Good Morning America, etc. I am glad to see she has become so successful. I heard she really paid her dues and overcame a few challenges in the early days. Anyway, I have gone to Melanie for facials from day one. She and Christine are now located at the newer Bev. Hills office. I agree with another poster that it is not a 'spa' style experience. It is clinical, and VERY thorough. Meaning every blackhead will be emancipated and every clogged pore will be liberated. You will not want to put makeup on again for a while, and don't plan to go to a big event for at least 2-3 days later....at which point your skin will be absolutely radiant and flawless and smooth as glass...no kidding. Both locations have great atmosphere and are first class experiences. They offer every treatment and laser you could ever imagine. Yeah celebs go here but I don't know who they are. I just see them paying with their black amex's and skulking around the office in giant sunglasses and hats. I'm not good at spotting celebs. Jesus could be sitting next to me in the waiting room and I wouldn't spot him. read more

Ava MD is a first class company that offers a multitude of skin care and management. Lisa, Taya and Tonya (spa-facial) are BEYOND fabulous! They truly listen to your needs and concerns, and address them in a postive and professional manner. I've been visiting this dermatology office for several years, and have never felt that they were pushing services on me-quite the contrary. I often inquire or suggest services that they say I don't need (yet!). Lisa is a true artist in Btox and fillers and takes the natural approach to fighting aging skin. Taya is very skilled and trained in the use of the state-of-the-art lasers. Tonya is a specialist in facial rejuvenation. All of them have incredible bedside manners, and are most welcoming and pleasant. I enjoy visiting my dermo's office for both routine dermatological check-ups, as well as micro cosmetic enhancements. A few months ago, a friend was visiting from out-of-town who had a very questionable mark on his face. We sent him to see Lisa, who saw him on very short notice. Thank goodness we did, because he had basal cell carcinoma which had to be surgically removed in their office. We are grateful to Lisa and the dermological team for treating our friend in the most caring and professional manner. I went for my yearly skin check and had Dr. Simzar. He was very nice and they did two biopsies. One came back with cancer, I went back and Dr. Simzar did the MOHS surgery. It didn't hurt and I was only there from 8am-11am. I get the stitches out at the end of this week. The people who work there are really kind and helpful. Yes, you have to pay for parking but really, most doctors offices in Los Angeles, you have to pay for parking unless you find street parking. Same here. Big deal. It is worth it to pay for some parking to go to a great doctor. I did not go for spa or cosmetic treatments, just medical and I will say this place is top notch! read more

I went to see Dr. Van Dyke for minimal acne on my face. He recommended topic gel and to return 1 month later. Upon returning, he stood far away not looking at my face at all and says, "everything going well, I said yes and he was leaving the door until I told him to look at my face. I was charged $55 because my insurance didn't pay there part which is due to my insurance but I paid for him to walk in the room for 2 minutes and not even want to look at how my face progressed. I am very disappointed and called Marie the Office Manager after leaving 4 or 5 voicemails, I finally called her again and finally got through saying she couldn't to anything. For the people out there looking for a place to fix their adult acne...you're exhausting search is over. I have had terrible hormonal cystic acne for 3 years straight and it hit me right when I got to college (perfect timing). My acne was got so bad that I wouldn't leave my apartment for days straight. I have tried everything from changing my diet, acutane, topicals, acupuncture, birth control...let's just say every time somebody says you should try ______ , I already had and had no luck. I've been to more doctors and medical spas then I can count and this is the ONLY place that has not only rid my acne, but also my scars from it. If you have adult acne go to Mojgan!!! she is quick, efficient, and gets the job done. She completely changed my skin. Only downfalls to going to Ava MD is parking is not cheap (I recommend getting dropped off and picked up) and it isn't the cheapest place out there but you will save so much money in the long run since you'll be finished spending endless dollars on different treatments trying to find something that works. I was treated to an amazing green peel by Mojan, who was very attentive and sweet. I also met with a very sweet NP named Chris who took the time to listen to my skin concerns and we developed a skin care treatment that I felt comfortable with. I even got to meet with Ava herself and she reassured that my skin will get better. Everyone had an uplifting and positive attitude. This place is horrible. They treat you like a number, and everyone here acts so fake and RUDE. They get you in and out to move on to the next. This isn't a carwash, it is a doctor's office. I don't understand this. They really need to do something about that. Their prices for everything is really expensive. I don't mind paying for quality, but when they are trying to get you in and out so fast, definitely not worth it. Oh and they do not validate for parking in their structure, which ends up being like 15 bucks if you are there for more than an hour. Overall, not pleased with their service and their hospitality. Mogjan is absolutely the greatest esthetician I have found. My facials are booked for the whole year that's how amazing she is. My skin has NEVER looked better!! The GREEN PEEL is amazing, she really has the magic touch! I love the products that she picks out for me, my skin hasn't been in condition like this in years. This review is for the spa treatments only and not the treatment by a dermy. I'd been searching around for a good facialist in LA for a while and chanced upon this place with a Google search. It's something of a misnomer to call facials here spa treatments since they take a more clinical, magnifying-glass-to-your-pores-and-metal-pick-to-face approach which is not something I find altogether relaxing as, say, a gentle, lulling facial you'd get at other traditional spas. That said, your skin will feel mighty clean after you leave this place. I've gone for several microdermabrasion treatments and I'm always amazed at how much cleaner my skin feels afterwards. You just feel like all the build up and gunk from daily exposure to the elements are sucked out of your pores. That said, if you're looking for a relaxing facial, the kind where you practically fall asleep while listening to a calm ocean soundtrack in the background, then this place probably isn't for you. Too, it's pretty hard to get an appointment here on a weekend given the limited hours they are open, so if you're an office rat like me then you'll be hard pressed to get regular appointments scheduled on weekends. read more

I'm just a woman trying to look my best for as long as I can. Ava Shaman, MD's staff is exactly what I'm looking for in my quest for knowledgeable and capable partners for my skin. I have persistent frown lines, and while they come from a combination of stress, and emotion (yes when I'm interested in something I tend to furrow my brows), etc. I just need a bit of Botox and some freshening. Other establishments have been too pushy with trying to hard-sell me procedures I don't want and far more Botox than I need. Those places are so stressful in that I have to keep saying "no" and fending them off with their baskets of products I don't want and suggested appointments. Before I found Dr Ava, I even had a technician at a reputable esthetician's tell me she couldn't waste good Botox and she needed to "put it in you somewhere". Yikes! Thank goodness for Carrie Ann who is super professional, zero pressure and yet is a fountain of knowledge if I am curious about any of Dr Ava Shamban's offerings. They get my appointment on their books correctly, they are on time, and in the case of Carrie Ann, I get exactly what I ask for, then I'm in and out with a smile and a hug. I've been going to the Ava Shamban office in Santa Monica for several years now, and my experience has always been great. Yes, you sometimes have to wait, that's because they are so busy with clients, especially Lisa - who receives a ton of requests for service. Which brings up my response to Lily K's review from June 2013 below. I can't understand what she's talking about. Lisa is probably the best medical/doctor experience I've had. She's warm, caring, has great people skills and is an expert in her field. She always treats you like a long-lost friend, even though I know she has a ton of clients. My experience with the other staff has been great also, especially Kelly and Rene, who are dolls. I've yet to meet Dr. Shamban, though, but that's not important; she's chosen great staff. I had some gnarly breakouts on my nose. Inflamed/red and desperate I found dr simzar and dr Ava. After a few weeks of trying different products and a infection test. Dr AVA ruled it as Rosacea.
